Advances in Unmanned Surface Vessels (USV s) James Williams Managing Director 1
Abstract Advances in Unmanned Surface Vessels (USV s) James Williams, Managing Director, Swathe Services Group, UK Advanced Undersea Vehicles and Systems offers a unique approach to survey operations with the development of a new Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV). After the product launch of the Multi-purpose USV (MUSV) v4.0 in the latter part of 2014, operational results have proven its capability as robust and reliable product for offshore and coastal applications. Initially fitted out with a high resolution R2SONIC Multi-Beam Echo-Sounder (MBES), Integrated Inertial Navigation System (I2NS) and Sound Velocity (SV) sensors, hydrographic survey data has been successfully acquired in US and UK waters. This highly versatile MUSV was operated as a single asset however a new innovative Integrated Transport Launch and Recovery System (IT-LARS) allows for multiple vessels to be deployed giving a cost effective productivity force multiplier. Future capability for a 12m version plus launch and recovery vehicles for AUV s and ROV s are also in the design phase with a 25m work class USV in the pipeline for long term development. 2

www.autonautusv.com AutoNaut is a revolutionary wave-propelled unmanned surface vessel (USV). Using pitch and roll to harvest energy from the waves gives her extremely long range and endurance, limited only by such issues as antifouling. A wide range of sensors have now been integrated: ADCP, AirMar weather station, pyranometer, a towed CTD and a through-hull CTD, WetLabs Triplet Puck, and two kinds of towed passive acoustic arrays. In addition cameras mounted on the mast have captured data for seabird and marine litter analysis. 19

There are a variety of USV s in the market of which the majority are small and inland. Although larger USV s are available in the commercial market most of these are servicing the military market (and not included in this presentation). Trials have been done for nearshore and offshore commercial operations although no survey company appears to have yet taken up this USV capability in the same way as for AUV s. With the exception of scientific research and MetOcean data collection which seems to be dominated by the smaller long endurance offshore vessels. There is an Operational Code of Conduct being produced, which is being lead by ASV, but no legal guidelines have been set on how these vehicles can be used in territorial waters. Many believe that USV s are the way forward for the commercial industry but perhaps there is some way still to go before they are adopted in the same way as the maturing AUV market? 26
