We offer five workshop topics which teach energy, horticulture and design through hands-on explorations of the beautiful and technically innovative Rover. CLASS SIZES Plants & Panels workshops are designed for classes of up to 24 students. We understand that student absences are unavoidable, so we cap our various packages for your convenience. PACKAGES & PRICES The Plants & Panels workshops are delivered by two expert demonstrators. We offer half day, full day and multiple day incursion packages as follows: Two days Full day Half day 14 workshops of 45 minutes each $2500 + GST 7 workshops of 45 minutes each $1495 + GST 4 workshops of 45 minutes each $960 + GST $7.44 per student $8.89 per student $10.00 per student The price excludes the cost of any additional plants requested by the school. Packages can be combined to suit your needs. Note. Schools further than 50km from the CBD incur a $50 travel fee for each additional 50km. REPEAT PROGRAM Ongoing discount of 10% off the standard price for schools which re-engage Future Growers or Plants & Panels within 12 months of the school s most recent incursion. This offer covers incursions both for other year level or for the same year levels. REFERRAL PROGRAM 10% off the standard price for any school that refers another school who subsequently engages Future Growers or Plants & Panels within 12 months of their incursion. NB these offers can not be used in conjunction with each other or any other offer. CANCELLATION POLICY Cancellations made within 2 weeks of the incursion may be subject to a cancellation fee of 50%. Plants & Panels Instructional method We use a combination of Harvard Vizible Thinking Tools and the E5 instructional model to teach applied maths and science, design thinking and problem solving. Our workshops teach students about energy, biodiversity, horticulture and design. We have 5 pathways through these topics. Their learning outcomes are outlined below. GREEN DESIGNS In this activity, students explore the Sustainability Rover to learn about different types of green infrastructure, from ground based gardens to green roofs and walls. Using a demonstration module, students will learn how this technology supports plant growth by providing the essential requirements of plants. This activity focuses on the services that plants provide, and why they are important in our urban environment. Students learn about the designs which support plants and gardens in our cities. Building on these ideas, students create their own green designs using maps of the school, and discuss these designs and their outcomes. This activity supports the AusVELS science priority of sustainability as students will learn to appreciate that science provides the basis for decision making in many areas of society and that these decisions impact the Earth system. This activity also supports the AusVELS English priority of sustainability as students will be better equipped to investigate, analyse and communicate ideas and information related to sustainability, and to advocate and evaluate actions for sustainable futures. - Living things, including plants and animals, depend on each other and the environment to survive - Science is used to inform personal and community decisions - Earth s surface changes over time as a result of natural processes and human activity - Energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity - Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties 1
PLANT IT UP In this activity, students learn about the physical and biological requirements of plants and the processes which affect their growth, while also receiving practical skills in plant handling and gardening. Students also learn about sustainable designs and technologies, including renewable energy and green roofs. Using a demonstration module, students discover the essential components and layers of a green roof and how these support plant growth. They also learn about the difference between substrate and soil, before participating in a team planting activity using green roof modules. This activity reflects the AusVELS sustainability priority and its organising ideas by teaching students that sustainable futures result from actions designed to preserve and restore the quality of environments. It also supports student understanding that all life forms, including human life, are connected through the ecosystems on which they depend for their wellbeing and survival. - Living things, including plants and animals, depend on each other and the environment to survive - Science is used to inform personal and community decisions - Earth s surface changes over time as a result of natural processes and human activity - Energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity - Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties SIZE UP YOUR SITE In this activity, students apply maths and science to measure and analyse a specific building at their school, identifying the key conditions which affect its potential to include green infrastructure. Students will measure and calculate the area and height of the building located and analyse its suitability for different types of vegetation and green technology. This activity supports the AusVELS English and Science priorities of sustainability as students will learn to appreciate that science provides the basis for decision making in many areas of society and that these decisions impact the Earth system. Students will also be better equipped to investigate, analyse and communicate ideas and information related to sustainability, and to advocate and evaluate actions for sustainable futures. Living things, including plants and animals, depend on each other and the environment to survive - The varying conditions and requirements of ground based versus at-height vegetation - How to calculate area and perimeter - Selecting plants for a specific site - Alternative water sources 2
MEASURE UP Recommended for summer incursions In this activity students learn about energy generation, heat transfer, and the physical properties of different materials. Students also learn about biological processes such as photosynthesis, plant growth and evapotranspiration. This activity is designed to support the principles of scientific theory including data collection, measurement, comparison and critical evaluation. This supports the AusVELS learning areas of science and technology, while also encouraging critical and creative thinking. This activity reflects the AusVELS sustainability priorities by exploring the relationships between systems and how they respond to change. Relationships including cycles and cause and effect are explored, and students develop observation and analysis skills to examine these relationships in the world around them. - Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties - Living things, including plants and animals, depend on each other and the environment to survive - Science is used to inform personal and community decisions - Weather conditions can affect the earth s surface - Science involves testing predictions by gathering data and using evidence to develop explanations of events and phenomena - Energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity SOLAR STORY In this activity, students learn the joy of scientific discovery through experimentation and observation, heightening their sense of curiosity. Students are invited to test and experiment with the use of different materials in order to understand the relationship between energy in sunlight and power (electricity) produced by solar panels. This activity supports the AusVELS science priority of sustainability as students will investigate the relationships between systems and components and how these systems respond to change. They will also explore the cycle of cause and effect and develop their observation and analysis skills. - The nature of scientific enquiry, including how to formulate and test a hypothesis - Measure and record observed data, in order to compare results from an experiment - Interpret data in order to validate or reject a hypothesis - Basic principles of solar energy that energy available in light can be converted to electricity by creating an electronic charge using a solar panel - Basic principles of physics that energy is not created or destroyed, it changes form - Communicate scientific understanding and justify ideas on the basis of evidence 3
PLANTS & PANELS CORE ACTIVITY In this activity, students learn about sustainable technologies and designs including green roofs and renewable energy. Building on this knowledge, students will learn about heat and energy transfer and how the physical properties of different materials affects these processes. Upon completing this activity, students will understand how different technologies can be used together to achieve more efficient and sustainable outcomes.
