Focus on Customer Information Stationary, highly automated customer information systems Innovative and reliable Information Technologies

Growing Need of Information In today s world, travelling comfort no longer solely rests on the interior finish of the train, but encompasses the entire travel experience, including all services and up to date information. You can meet the growing demands efficiently by using highly automated and reliable solutions. The stationary customer information systems of Funkwerk Information Technologies Karlsfeld set standards in this respect: Comprehensive provision of information with simultaneous relieve of the burden on operators and announcers. An information manager monitors and controls the customer information for a whole region. Up-to-date and comprehensive customer information makes the rail-bound traffic more attractive, competitive and viable for the future. Information from Start to Destination Customers today expect up to date, easy understandable and reliable travel information from the moment they leave their home until they reach their destination. Customer information systems (CIS) from Funkwerk Information Technologies Karlsfeld GmbH offer efficient solutions in this regard. The CIS includes the following components: Display systems for visual customer information (at the station, inside the coach, on smartphones) Modular system CAIMAN for control and intuitive operation of the system Announcement systems for acoustic customer information Of course, Funkwerk offers customer information systems as turn-key solutions: from engineering through installation and commissioning to maintenance all from one source. Looks Good: Display Technologies Various environmentally friendly displays, monitors and boards with a wide range of technologies, such as TFT, LCD, LED, matrix, or electronic ink are available for visual customer information in all station areas. The design of the displays and their layouts can be adapted in accordance with the individual customer-specific specifications and preferences. 2

Display generation with LED-Backlight Sounds good: Automated Announcements Passenger announcements can be generated in parallel to the display of visual passenger information. These automated announcements can be in provided in different languages and configured to meet customer requirements. Automated passenger arrival and connecting train announcements are triggered by special sensor technology developed by Funkwerk Information Technologies Karlsfeld. These sensors detect the precise moment a train stops at a platform and report this information to the CIS control computer for further processing and to generate automated announcements, which can include: Significant energy saving Maintenance is minimized due to replacement of the fluorescent tubes Extension of the life-time of components due to optimized climate management inside the display Significant reduction of life cycle costs Harmonized LED lighting colour optimises the optical characteristics and produces a brilliant image The displays are remote diagnosable and controllable via web browser Automated software updates can be accomplished anytime by integration in a software management system Developed for extreme environmental conditions, such as direct sunlight, high and low temperatures Advance notice of trains / announcement of arriving trains Announcement of timetable deviations (delays, platform changes, train composition changes) Announcement of connecting trains Through train warnings for passengers Adjusted Live Announcements: The voice messages can be spoken live or composed of stored speech modules, depending on the announcement device. Increasingly important becomes the textto-speech technology, i.e. the synthetic speech announcements are generated by the computer from raw text. The operator has the opportunity to select from a wide range of voices and intonations. As a result the customer hears the announcement in constant high voice quality, very similar to a natural voice. There are some other benefits for the operator of the system. Speech modules must not been recorded with a great deal of effort by a professional speaker. New announcements can be set up and managed efficiently and without delay. 3

CAIMAN - Overview Fully automated generation of announcements and displays for standard and special situations in rail transport Control of independent local systems and single stations right up to central control of entire regions due to scalable system architecture Future compliant due to extendable, modular architecture High availability due to hot standby technology Open system architecture with IP-network based, XML format standard interfaces for connecting terminals Extensive diagnostic tools for targeted problem limitation, even in extremely complex systems Current train route data is taken from operations control centres CAIMAN - Customer Announcement and Information Manager: Convenient for Passengers and Operators Always Up to Date: Data Sources Funkwerk Information Technologies Karlsfeld s CIS extracts all the data needed to provide customer information like daily timetables, deviations from scheduled operations and current train positions. This up to the second process data enables fully automated control of displays and announcements, thereby drastically reducing the manual work involved, even in case of operational disturbance. Data that cannot be obtained automatically can be easily supplemented by the operator. Apart from currently integrated interfaces to timetable databases and operational report systems (i.e. VDV), additional customer specific interfaces can be integrated at any time. Data on current train composition and train position are taken from operations control centres or on a local scale from the train describer system. This data is supplemented by reports transmitted by Funkwerk Information Technologies Karlsfeld s special train stop sensors, which form a part of the customer information system. Intuitive: The Stationary and Mobile Operating Workstations Here the trains are displayed in the chronological order of their expected arrival at the station. The train s ID (train number, scheduled departure time, etc.), further train information (destination, route, comments) as well as the current status of the train in relation to the station are displayed in a semi-graphical form. The information managers of the operator thus have a perfect overview of current operations. 4

CAIMAN - Keep Track Reliable: The CAIMAN Automation While at single stations, operations revolve around monitoring and if necessary correcting information regarding individual train trips, the management of larger areas, however, requires fast detection and targeted counter measures in the event of disruptions. To do this, CAIMAN offers different users, such as dispatcher, timetable manager or administrator modern, adapted to their requirements user interfaces at up to four monitors. The operator workstation can be either a permanently installed PC or a web-based client on a mobile tablet-pc. The graphical user interface gives a quick overview of the system status of the connected stations. All essential activities are displayed colour coded. A simple click of your mouse provides you with details and lets you enter additional information. The integrated workstation features a built-in microphone function, which allows non train related announcements, additional information in the event of disruption of service and live announcements to broadcast. Furthermore, announcements can be recorded, stored and broadcast via the PA system according to defined parameters. The connection to the PA system is set up via an IP-network using VoIP technology or by text-to-speech technology. Graphic topology for quick overview of the operational situation and the technical status at connected stations Topological display ensures rapid access to local or generally available functions Simple and clear handling of stored, non train related announcements Quick recording and storage of additional non train related announcements for special situations Comprehensive analysis options for detecting and resolving disturbances Live announcements at all connected stations Spot On: Video Monitoring for Platforms A clear upgrade in functionality can be achieved by integrating video cameras with IP connectivity into the existing display technology network. Video images can then be transmitted to the CAIMAN workstation by IP-network. The workstation provides the option of train controlled or manual display of the video cameras. This enables central monitoring of the numerous connected stations even in areas that are difficult to see. 5

Flexibility: Optimised Safety Alert Message for Waiting Travellers Optimised safety regarding passing through high speed trains and stations with increased risk potential CAIMAN delivers the appropriate solution with its reliable automatic alert messaging feature. CAIMAN an efficient solution for station operation and an add-on to safety for passengers. Before trains pass through an alert message A special feature of CAIMAN is the traveller alert, which has been developed by Funkwerk Information Technologies Karlsfeld. Once trains pass through a station, an alert message will be broadcast automatically at the affected platforms. To optimise this alert, specific algorithms regarding the expected pass through time of the train are added to basic CAIMAN functionalities. Central data source for this feature is the train describer feed. Based on that data the incident of a train passing through is precisely derived through a self-learning algorithm, whilst the quality of the outcome is double-checked by pass through sensors on the platform. All that adds up to a timely and reliable alert message for waiting travellers on the platform. 6

CAIMAN - Our References High Availability and Flexibility CAIMAN is able to control individual stations as single PC solution or stations of a whole region as server system. It can be based on a highly reliable double server system in hot-standby mode. Data are stored on two nodes, so as to ensure a quick switchover without loosing any data once the active system fails. More than 400 stations at the German Federal Railway, e.g. Berlin Central Station, Cologne Main Station, Munich East, Hamburg Main Station, Düsseldorf Main Station High speed line Hamburg- Berlin S-Bahn Berlin S-Bahn Munich Underground railway Munich Underground railway Nürnberg Northern Rail, Great Britain Kursk Station, Moscow, Russia Finnish Railway Administration (FTA) Austrian Railways (ÖBB) Luxembourg Railways (CFL) Südostbahn (SOB), Switzerland Workstations, announcement devices and sensors are connected via an IP network; they can be flexibly installed and extended. Announcement devices preferably are combined with a public address unit in order to allow for realisation of automatic intelligent PA systems. Once a CAIMAN system has been installed, the system can be extended at any time by adding more stations or local devices on additional platforms. Automation the Reliable Way CAIMAN operates fully automatic, no continuous surveillance is needed. Skilled operating through checking the settings of the system and reacting to unforeseen incidents are the sole requirements to ensure a smooth operations flow. Timetables can be quickly adjusted according to operational needs what makes the system work automatically. 7
