1-1 JSPS Liaison Offices in the US JSPS San Francisco Office Establishment 2003.5 CA The academic and scientific activity equivalent to one country. A lot of academic and research organization like UC, Stanford. The mission is to explore new relationships with academic communities in the U.S., and promote cooperation. Academia Oriented Vancover Austin JSPS Washington Office Establishment 1990.12 Capital Governmental organizations NSF, NIH etc. are concentrated. The mission is to make strong connections with counter organizations and focus on national policy. Policy Oriented Each office has strategic and complementary functions depending on regional features.

Stanford University Functions To communicate with academic institutions with regard to the implementation of JSPS Programs To disseminate and gather information and materials needed in promoting scientific cooperative activities in the US and Japan To provide information and assistance to US researchers interested in applying for JSPS fellowships or collaborative programs between JSPS and US counterpart agencies, and to offer follow-up service to US researchers who have completed JSPS Program To provide logistics assistance to Japanese researchers visiting the US in pursuit of their research work, for international exchange, etc. To do anything related to above
1-3 JSPS SF Office activities (1)Networking with Academic Institutions We visit the Universities in the US to introduce JSPS and our programs, for examples: fellowships to invite foreign researchers to Japan, to co-organize a colloquium, through the meetings and workshops in the campus [UC (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine etc.), Stanford University, UTA, Harvard University, MIT etc.]. Trusting networks have developed making it possible to collaborate such events. 1-3 JSPS SF Office activities (4)Networking Japanese Researchers We have the gathering party called Gathering of JSPS Japanese Fellows for Japanese young researchers in the US twice a year. It brings an opportunity for Japanese researchers to meet and know each other, and expand their network. The number of participants are increasing. ( )To issue the Newsletter in English We are issuing the Newsletters quarterly, and put it on the website. http://www.jspsusa-sf.org/archives.html From last April, we have started to accept articles from Japanese Universities and are sending newsletters to universities/ people in the universities according to their requests, to spread Japanese academic and scientific activity more widely. - the number of sent the newsletters (organization, people) : about 300 * quarter * (Japanese organization, people : 48 - the number of articles from Japanese Universities 3 4 quarter

How to success and expand the important information as JSPS SF Center? ( ) To enhance the ability of dealing with Collecting Sending Information We need to enhance the ability for collecting and sending the newest Information of Japanese researchers and projects. How to get the newest academic and scientific information? How to find the way to get the information?) America is large and various. Japan is diversifying rapidly. How to decide the subject to collect/ send information effectively? What is a good tool? ( )Distribution of resources It is most difficult to decide how to distribute the limited human power and money to react to these problems.

2-5 The matter of JUNBA ( )The range of activities and members Basically, the member is supposed to be in the Bay area and to be able to attend the meeting. However, the organization that has the office in the US but is far from the Bay area, may request to join, but we need to talk about the range of activities and members. ( ) To enhance the ability of dealing with Collecting & Sending Information We are still on the way to networking with each other, and our ability of collecting and sending information is not enough yet. How do we reinforce the system for gathering and issuing information as JUNBA? maintenance of HP, planning of the events, etc.) It is important to link each network that each member of JUNBA has effectively. ( )The differences of styles We are representatives of Japanese organizations, but we can t do everything here as we would in Japan because there is cultural differences between Japan and the US. We need to understand each other, and choose [Japanese style] or [Silicon Valley style] depending on the situation. It is very important to make a balance.
