1 56 th Karuizawa Top Management Seminar At this time we would like to offer our deepest sympathies to all of those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Since starting the first manager's seminar in Japan in 1958, Karuizawa Top Management Seminar has become the best in summer financial seminars and holding events every year, with this year heralding their 56th time. This year is united under the theme of "The Economy after the Great East Japan Earthquake: From Recovery and Restoration to Construction." A great blow was dealt to Japan by this earthquake. In order to overcome this difficult state of affairs we must boldly proceed, drawing up a grand vision with the co-operation of all industries as its core. This grand vision will aim at "Construction", the creation of a new country, as well as recovery and restoration. Management reforms to overcome the crisis are sought, such as even the industrial world s conversion to low energy consumption models and supply chain restructuring. Under such circumstances, we feel that the carrying out and implementation of strong leadership aimed at strategic implementation is required in order to sustainably continue growth. We will be holding an event as a place where amidst business managers gathering and discussing issues together, conditions and business strategies for Japan's continued growth are shaped in order to support awareness of issues such as this, as well as management reform in light of the earthquake and tidal changes at the same time. We will be delighted if this seminar acts to assist in forming your guidelines. Panel "Effect for Tohoku Restoration and Recovery" The Tohoku area, which received a great blow in the recent earthquake, is vigorously making progress to construct Japan. Michinori Holdings, the holding company for a Tohoku area bus company, from the day following the earthquake dispatched buses to the affected areas and operated free of charge, acting as transport for the citizens. 4 Conversation "Conversion to Low Energy Consumption Model Industry" We feel that due to the nuclear power generation incident caused by the earthquake, the energy supply and demand outlook has become unclear and due to increasing resource consumption by emerging nations economic growth, conversion to low energy consumption model industry is linked to enterprise's competitive power. We will talk to Mr. Kobayashi, who is developing projects aimed at implementing a genuine, sustainable "The KAITEKI (comfortable) Society", about courses of action that industry should aim for. Although business operations are expanding globally, due to the limited companies that can supply parts which require expensive technological competence and raw materials the concept of an optimal supply chain that combines efficiency and risk reduction is required. We will be discussing in terms of products, logistics and procurement. Furthermore, their goal is that "From the standpoint of the customer that buys and uses our products, customer satisfaction is No.1", and are holding fast to an insistence on complete quality. We will discuss coming to grips with the constructed value creation new model in which quality is consistent with additional value. 5 Subcommittee 2: "Recycling Orientated Business Winning in the Domestic Market through Home Delivery Transactions" In the midst of Japan's continuing low birth rates and ageing population, reductions in the domestic market are becoming an issue. Under these kinds of circumstances NETOFF is continuing to grow and provide a 21st century eco lifestyle through "home delivery transactions", which enable anyone to participate in reusing and recycling unwanted items, such as books, CDs and home electronics. We will talk about business models and strategic approaches aimed at a truly recycling orientated society. Even under these kinds of circumstances, there are businesses continuing to grow, who take note of minute regional variations, and by taking on board this news, take strategies closely related to the region. We will welcome managers from these kinds of companies and discuss the strategies of the evolving distribution industry. Religious scholar Dr. Yamaori considers that the difference in these perceptions is inextricably linked to humans' way of life. We will talk to the Dr., who hails from Iwate Prefecture, about the spirit facing such an unprecedented earthquake and our way of life from here on. Tetsuo YAMAORI International Research Center for Japanese study Professor emeritus Special Lecture "The Power of Developing Science" We feel that aiming at earthquake recovery and restoration to construction, Japanese science and technological power is contributing in a big way. While exchanging experiences with Japanese researchers, we will talk about your thoughts towards the development of and role that science and technology must play, in regards to Japan s construction hereafter.
