Buddy Program Our Bariatric surgery program is offering a buddy program to provide an opportunity for patients to give and receive support for weight management. The buddy program is designed to help incoming and existing patients prepare for and adjust to changes that are experienced while losing weight. Being or having a buddy is a great way to get the full benefit of additional support during weight management efforts. Guidelines Because the buddy program is a voluntary program and the buddies are not trained professionals, there are guidelines that must be followed to ensure an optimal level of support. All patients are eligible to have or be a buddy. Discuss how, when and where you want to connect (i.e. phone, e-mail, for a walk, for coffee, etc.) Be open and honest; assert yourself. Try to keep your focus on weight management issues. Discuss the type of support you would like (feedback, advice, just to be heard, etc.) If you would like to participate, fill out a program enrollment form and place it in the mail box outside of our weigh-in room. If you have questions please contact: Jackie Odom, Ph.D., Beaumont Bariatric Surgery Program 248-655-5921. P5397g5_5688_022211 6

Body Composition Testing Body composition testing provides additional information beyond the basic measures of height and weight. Body composition simply refers to the components of your body, lean tissue and fat tissue. The technique we use for measuring body composition is called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), a simple six-minute X-ray scan recorded with you lying on your back. You will have your first test shortly before or after surgery and periodically during weight loss. Body composition testing is used to monitor how much fat you are losing and is helpful at determining healthful weight-loss goals. Please discuss getting a body composition with one of our staff physicians to determine appropriate timing for this test in your case. P5397g12_5688_022211 13
