Insulin resistance is a condition characterized by an inability of the body to utilize the hormone insulin properly. 3 rue or alse? A normal BMI is 24.9 or less. 4 rue or alse? A measuring tape can show fat loss more effectively than a scale. 5 Name three ways you can jump-start your weight management plan.

alking Points Intended to supplement your curriculum, these talking points cover main themes of the segment to help lead class discussion. hey also serve as a review of the pre-test answers. Excess weight is an issue for many people living with type 2 diabetes. In addition to being a risk factor for developing the disease, being overweight or obese also promotes the insulin resistance that is the main mechanism behind type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is a condition characterized by the inability of the body to utilize the hormone insulin properly. oo much body fat makes it harder for the body to use the insulin it makes to process blood glucose. Because excess blood sugar is stored by the body as fat, uncontrolled diabetes can make weight problems worse. his cycle can lead to weight management challenges. What is Overweight? Body mass index, or BMI, is a measurement that calculates weight in relationship to height and is considered a reliable indicator of body fat. or adults, BMI breakdowns are as follows: Normal 24.9 or less Overweight Obese Extreme (or morbid) obesity 40 or higher BMI for children and young adults aged 2 to 20 is measured by a charting system known as BMIfor-age. BMI-for-age is expressed in terms of percentiles. A child with a BMI-for-age that is in the 95th percentile or higher is considered overweight. hose in the 85th to 94th percentile are considered at risk for being overweight. Your child s pediatrician can help you interpret their weight, height and BMI patterns. he location of excess pounds also makes a difference. People who have an apple-shaped body (i.e., extra weight around the waist) are at higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Effective Weight Management he same things that are good for your diabetes regular exercise and healthy dietary habits are key to weight control. A registered dietitian, preferably one who is also a certified diabetes educator (or CDE) and is experienced in diabetes care, can help you develop a meal plan that s customized to your particular needs. or cases of obesity where conventional lifestyle changes have not helped reduce weight to a healthy level, medical treatment such as prescription weight loss drugs and gastric bypass may be an option. Your doctor can discuss the risks and benefits of these treatment and help you determine what s right for you.

alking Points (cont d) Getting Started We dug deep to find the best tips for people who want to lose weight. ake this page, put it on your fridge, and get going! Stick to the measuring tape. Weight often comes with muscle gain, often leading to the numbers on the scale going in the wrong direction. When it comes to shedding body fat, the scale is not always your friend. he best way to slim down is to simultaneously change your eating habits and increase physical activity. Choose soup. A bowl of any broth-based soup, especially one with veggies and beans try kale, onion and white beans can be a great strategy for weight loss. You can get in a lot of healthy ingredients and find yourself so satisfied you don t even need that midafternoon or late-night nosh. Address your mental state. Many people use food as comfort, distraction, pleasure, or as a buffer for stress and other negative emotions. Some people are psychologically addicted to food, and they use it as a way of self-medicating an underlying problem. If you think you habitually use food to make yourself feel better, talk to a mental health counselor who can help you determine whether you re a candidate for an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication. Add to your repertoire. Instead of focusing on the things you must limit or deny yourself in order to lose body fat, celebrate new foods that you can add to shake up your meal plans. ry to adopt a new whole grain, fruit, or vegetable every week. Choose foods that take time. While expanding your culinary repertoire to include more healthy choices, add foods that force you to slow down. hink of foods you have to peel or pick apart artichokes, pomegranate, kiwi, crab and other shellfish, or even a hardboiled egg. Retrain your taste buds. It is a well-known fact that when people give up salt, even lightly salted foods begin to taste terribly over-salty. he same is true for people who give up sugar things start tasting cloyingly sweet. Extend this concept to foods made with white flour, and you may find yourself losing your taste or at least your cravings for white breads, bagels, rolls, pasta, and the like. Pre-est Answer Key: 1) b; 2) ; 3) ; 4) ; 5) use a measuring tape instead of a sale, choose soup, address your mental state, etc. Post-est Answer Key: 1) a; 2) registered dietitian, a certified diabetes educator, regular exercise, etc.; 3) ; 4).

Post-est 1 An apple-shaped body describes a body shape where excess weight is stored: a. Around the waist. b. In the arms. c. In the hips and thighs. 2 What are some of the tools you can use to achieve your weight goals? 3 rue or alse? If diet and exercise fail to achieve weight loss goals, there are several surgical options available. 4 rue or alse? Choosing foods that take time to eat, like artichokes or shellfish, can help you eat less quickly and therefore feel full faster.

Related Activities 1 Invite a registered dietitian to your group to talk about relationships between diabetes, food, and exercise. Encourage a group discussion about healthy eating tips, exercise ideas, and way to manage motivation burnout. 2 he first step towards weight loss is to get moving! Make one of your support group sessions a mobile one, bringing the show on the road. Have your group members wear their sneakers and visit a local track, shopping mall, or even a quiet neighborhood and hold your meeting on the go!
