Rotating Mural #03 - Artist Adolfo Hernandez STATEMENT I have chosen to paint a female in the center of the collaborative wall. I feel the city of Savannah and its metro area brings that warm motherly feeling when you walk its streets and sites. The humidity is like she hugs you sometimes a bit to tight and never lets out of her site. Vines and leaves decorate her headpiece like the gardens and parks decorate her living room and bring you pleasant aromas as you walk by her kitchen. I feel seashells bring mystery to her and the thunderstorms that come and go represents her passion. Adolfo Hernandez was born in Northern Mexico s Ciudad Juarez, and both the city and country remain major influences in his work. Both the rich, colorful culture of Mexico and the dreadful violence that has consumed his hometown have had a strong impact on his work. Adolfo s introduction to art began at a young age; while running errands with his mom he d study the array of murals that cropped up in neighborhoods around the city. Later, his family moved to El Paso, and what had been a hobby into a teenage profession, painting commission pieces. His pursuit of art led him to the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2002, where he studied Motion Graphics and continued to paint regularly. Adolfo became involved in Savannah s bustling arts community, showing his work often, including events like DeSoto Strut (a semi-annual gallery hop in the city s Starland District), Taste (a daylong celebration of Savannah s art and music communities), and the Savannah Urban Arts Festival (a multi-day annual event held every spring). His unique use of form and color draws inspiration from comic books, religious iconography, and the intricate designs of the Meso America. His subject matter spans an equally broad spectrum; slick abstractions or gritty explorations of the violence endemic to the US-Mexican border region. PROPOSAL FOR MURAL at Habersham & 34th Street September 2012 The artist proposal for the existing Habersham/34th mural project includes the artists female representation of of the welcoming warmth the city of Savannah brings. Several iconic representations of Savannah will be represented here, ie. seashells, and other nautical themes. With his Meso-American painting style he will incorporate the color pallet that was already started by Katherine Sandoz landscape. Adolfo has experience doing similar large murals around the country. He is involved in the Savannah community and is a painting instructor at the YMCA and is apart of Savannah s A.W.O.L. (All Walks of Life) program where he also teaches painting. We will begin painting mid September. This is at the 34th and Habersham mural wall, so this will stay up for approximately 4 months until the next artists proposal to paint over this mural.
