Throughout the past year, Community Cancer Care has continued to grow. During, we have made several changes and additions in our efforts to provide high quality care. We have implemented music, art, massage and pet therapies at our medical oncology building. Studies suggest that these therapies can ease patients anxieties and allow them to relax during their cancer journey. We are thrilled with the response we have seen. Whether it s singing along with our music therapist, painting in their favorite colors or loving on Moose the German shepherd, our patients have enjoyed these experiences during treatment. We welcomed a new medical oncologist a few months ago. Dr. Natraj Reddy Ammakkanavar (Dr. Reddy) has joined our team and has begun seeing patients. And finally, our MD Anderson affiliation has continued to benefit our patients in, as our certified oncologists have been able to consult with MD Anderson experts on difficult and rare cases. Community remains focused on caring for our patients and providing them with the best experience possible. We are looking ahead to 6, where we will continue the fight against cancer. The program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and the College of American Pathologists. Community s Women s Center has been named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

Study Analysis: Lung cancer Comparing - with Community Hospital Anderson and National Data From years, there were 6 patients diagnosed with lung cancer at Community Hospital Anderson (). Of those, 6 patients were found to have early stage disease (Stage I-II), and diagnosed with advanced disease (Stage III-IV). (See table Stage at Diagnosis). Within the advanced disease cohort, the majority had Stage IV metastatic cancer, of cases. When comparing s Stage at diagnosis to national data, the breakdown is similar (See table National Stage Comparison). When looking at treatments received for lung cancer, the majority of patients had radiation and chemotherapy without surgery (8%), compared to those patients who received surgery with or without radiation and/or chemotherapy (%). Approximately 8 percent of lung cancer cases are linked to smoking. Lung cancer symptoms include: A cough that does not go away and gets worse over time Constant chest pain, often made worse by deep breathing, coughing or laughing Arm or shoulder pain Coughing up blood or rust-colored spit Shortness of breath, wheezing or hoarseness Repeated episodes of pneumonia or bronchitis Lung cancer risk factors: Smoking tobacco in cigarettes, cigars or pipes A history of heavy smoking Exposure to secondhand smoke If you stop smoking, your risk becomes lower as time goes by Family history of lung cancer Previous lung cancer Exposure to certain hazardous materials including radiation, arsenic, radon, chromium, nickel, soot or asbestos Exposure to air pollution Lung disease like tuberculosis
Oncology navigation Michelle Anders and Katie Elliott are the oncology patient navigators. Upon diagnosis, each patient meets with Katie or Michelle. The navigators then help to coordinate the patient s care with all caregivers, guiding them through the health care system. The navigator s involvement helps to ease the burden for the patient. They can also assist in connecting patients with other needed resources during their treatment. Katie and Michelle are available to answer questions and provide support for patients and their families. Katie Elliott, Jill Hensley, RN, Michelle Anders, and Pam Davis, RN Navigation in breast health services Jill Hensley, RN and Pam Davis, RN serve as the breast health navigators at Community Hospital Anderson. Both Jill and Pam have over years of experience in women s health care. Jill and Pam meet with every patient who has a breast biopsy at Community Anderson. If a patient is diagnosed with breast cancer, the navigators will provide educational materials. Jill and Pam work with the patient s primary care provider, surgeon and oncologists to ensure the patient is receiving all the necessary care. They check health history, family history and make referrals for genetic testing. The navigators continue to follow patients for at least five years following treatment. If patients are uninsured or underinsured, the navigators can connect them with one of our programs to help pay for these services. Community has several grants that provide funding for screening and diagnostic mammograms, as well as breast ultrasounds and biopsies. Community is a provider of the Indiana Breast Cancer/Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) for women between the ages of -. Research The Community Clinical Research Center conducts numerous clinical trials in many specialties. Patients benefit through research by gaining access to new treatments before they are widely available. Also, research patients receive top quality medical care and close monitoring by board certified physicians. Cancer conference, tumor board, breast conference Physicians, nurses and other support staff meet twice monthly to discuss newly diagnosed cancer cases. Surgeons and Oncologists review their cases with other specialties and peers, reviewing national guidelines and clinical staging, discussing the best option for their patient s treatment. Radiologists review the patient films with the physicians and pathologists review their findings from biopsies or surgery specimens. Gathering in a multi-disciplinary fashion allows physicians to not only talk to their same specialty about their case but also their referring physician about the care of their patient. This allows for the team taking care of the patient to know what everyone has planned. The nurses are informed about the expectations of the physicians and make recommendations regarding patient care from a nursing perspective. Clinical research is discussed regarding care of the patient and the availability of clinical trials within the area. Cancer conference/tumor board is made of general surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologist, OB/GYN, urology, diagnostic radiology, pathology, oncology nursing, nurse navigators, social services, cancer registry, rehab, clinical research, and cancer services administrators. Cancer registry Nancy Hunt is Community Hospital Anderson s certified tumor registrar. She collects all of the Community Cancer Care patient data and enters it into a database, which is sent to the state registry and national cancer database. This information is then disseminated anonymously by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Information provided through this database includes patient survival, age at diagnosis, staging at diagnosis and treatment at diagnosis. Analysis of this data allows for the identification of opportunities for improvement nationally and locally. Palliative care / surveillance team Our palliative care/surveillance team meets once weekly with an interdisciplinary team. This team discusses all new cancer treatment cases, looking at the side effects the patient could experience, the patient s other medical problems that could cause issues during treatment, the patient s psychosocial assessment and the patient s home support. At this time referrals are recommended for physical or occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutritional support, psychosocial support, financial help and other needs that may arise. Psychosocial support Jodi Nixon, Ph.D, psychologist, visits cancer patients two times each week. She is available to meet with patients and families, helping them understand what they are going through, providing support and guidance. 6

Integrative therapy Community Hospital Anderson introduced several types of integrated therapy in at our medical oncology center. Integrative therapy has been shown to help a patient heal and feel relaxed. The program includes art, music, pet and massage therapies. The art therapist works with patients individually or in groups. Our musician brings multiple musical instruments and provides music in common areas, as well as privately. Patients and staff look forward to visits from Moose, the German Shepherd pet therapy dog. A massage therapist provides hand and foot massages to patients during their treatments. The integrative therapy program has received excellent reviews from patients, and we look forward to growing this program as we move forward. Radiation/post-mastectomy garments, bras and breast forms are covered yearly by Medicare and most insurance plans. Judy Wood, certified mastectomy fitter, provides each patient with a personalized consultation. The Comfort Shoppe is located right next to Community Hospital Anderson s Women s Center, in the emergency department lobby. We have three certified mastectomy fitters on staff for your convenience. Funded breast programs There are many women in our community who are uninsured or underinsured and cannot afford an annual mammogram, or the necessary follow up care. With a grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness/License Plate Grant (IBCAT), and as a provider of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP), Community Hospital Anderson s breast center has found the resources to provide services to these women.
