CAREER INFORMATION Massage Therapists work to produce physical, mental, and emotional benefits through the manipulation of soft tissue. Auxiliary methods such as the movement of joints and application of dry and steam heat are used. Various types of massage techniques are used to affect different body problems. Techniques include: kneading (using light or hard rhythmic stroking, pressing and lifting the muscle), tapotement (tapping) and Rolfing (involving deep massage with intense pressure). Trigger-point therapy focuses on a painful area in a muscle and Reflexology is applied to the specific points on the feet and hands to correspond to particular parts of the body. Massage Therapists may use rollers, vibrators, and heat and cold applications to produce desired results. People who enjoy working within this career usually have social and/or athletic skills. They are interested in the human relationship more than working with things or ideas. People in this career are sometimes described as extroverted, sociable, persistent, and patient. The employment outlook for Massage Therapists is good. A ten-fold increase in new members over the last ten years has been reported by the American Massage Therapy Association which has more than 15,000 members. The growing acceptance of massage therapy as an important health care discipline has led to the creation of additional jobs. GENERAL OBJECTIVES The Massage Therapy Program is designed to meet the need for qualified Massage Therapists in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, chiropractic centers, cosmetology salons, sports rehabilitation clinics, rehabilitation/ physical therapy providers, salons, resorts, spas, and cruise ships. More than two-thirds of all Massage Therapists are self-employed. PROGRAM INFORMATION The Massage Therapy Program offered at Pensacola State College, which is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, is offered at the Pensacola campus. The Massage Therapy Program produces graduates qualified to take the national certification examination and apply for licensure as a Massage Therapist in the State of Florida. Students completing the program will receive a vocational certificate, which certifies that the student has attained job-entry competence. GENERAL INFORMATION Applicants must complete the application process and meet the selection criteria. To be considered, applicants must have a GPA of 2.0 or better. TABE: All students enrolling in certificate programs are required to undergo a skills assessment process utilizing the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) examination as mandated by the State of Florida. When you apply to the Massage Therapy Program, you must also schedule an appointment to take the TABE test by calling the Testing Center appointment line (484-1987). Three areas are assessed in the TABE test: Reading, Language, and Math. If your score is below the required grade in any of the three sections, you will be required to sign up for remediation for that section with the Adult Basic Education Department and complete it before graduation from the Massage Therapy Program. Each remedial section is one vocational credit for which you will be required to pay. It is recommended that you sign up and complete any remediation in the Adult Basic Education Department before the Massage Therapy class begins. This will enable you to focus solely on Massage Therapy. The TABE test is a diagnostic examination; students do not pass or fail. Being diagnostic, areas of strengths and weaknesses are identified. Students enrolled in the Massage Therapy program will need to master the required level of the test material to complete the requirement of their vocational program. You are exempt from taking the TABE test if you graduated from high school in 2007 or later, or if you are currently active duty military.

LICENSE INFORMATION Upon completion of graduation requirements, the student is eligible to take the next available Florida Massage Therapy Certification Examination. State law requires exam applicants to verify under oath that they are free of physical or mental defect and alcohol or substance abuse. Convicted felon cases are reviewed on an individual basis.
