1 PENSACOLA STATE COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF PROFESSIONAL SERVICE CAREERS Nails Specialty Program Application Packet (16 Weeks, Evening Classes) (12 Weeks, Day Classes) Class Hours (Fall and Spring): Monday through Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Class Hours (Summer): Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Heather McDaniel, Nails Instructor (850) (Monday Thursday after 5:30 p.m.) The Nails Specialty Program is a 16-week program; 12 weeks in the summer term. The Nails Specialty Program is limited to 10 students per class. Students are accepted into the program on a first-come/first-served basis according to the date the application and other documents are received. The instructor will notify you via if you have been accepted into the program. Please read the information contained in this packet carefully. Questions should be directed to the Nails Instructor. Your Orientation will be held on the first day of class. If your address or phone number changes, please be sure to notify us promptly. 3 Welcome to the Creative World of Nails Specialty The Pensacola State College Nails Specialty Program features products from Tammy Taylor Nails, CND, LaPalm, and Backscratchers Salon Systems. The Pensacola State College philosophy is Nail design is an art form and you are the artist! Will there be jobs after graduation? Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ s) Employment is predicted to grow as fast as average with the growth of the population and the demand for nail tech services. Most preferences are toward personalized styling in full-service areas, which enhance job opportunities. This occupation is on the top 50 list of occupations gaining the most new jobs. The Pensacola State College Nails Specialty Program has a high percentage of students being hired right after graduation. Pensacola State College invites salon professionals to come to the Nails Specialty Program to teach new techniques to the students. Frequently, the professionals who come to the Pensacola State Nails Specialty Program are also looking for new and fresh talent to work in their salons. What are the career advancement options? Graduates of the Nails Specialty Program at Pensacola State College are qualified to work in all aspects of manicuring, pedicuring, and artificial nails. Because nail technology is constantly changing, nail technicians must keep abreast of the latest fashions and beauty techniques. Business skills are important for those who plan to operate their own salons. While advancement is usually measured in the form of higher earnings, many nail techs manage large salons or open their own salon after several years of experience. Some choose to teach in Nails schools, while others become sales representatives or platform artists for manufacturers of nail care products. Students may also choose to obtain their facials specialty and/or cosmetology certificates, which enhance their abilities and expand their skills into other services provided by licensed cosmetic specialists. The career opportunities for the licensed/registered nail technician are both versatile and personally rewarding. Do I have to take an entrance exam? As of January 7, 2003, no entrance tests are required for the Nails Specialty Program. However, if you feel that your reading comprehension, your arithmetic skills, and/or your use of the English language are not what they should be, you may schedule an appointment with the Testing Center ( ) to take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). This will help you know your potential for success in completing your program of study. If you take, or have taken, the TABE and there is an area in which you would like to raise your level of competency, you may go to the Adult Basic Education Department to register for remediation in the area(s) that you want to improve (Reading, Arithmetic, or Language). The Adult Basic Education Department (ABE) is there to assist you in improving your TABE scores. Once you attend the orientation, they will help you schedule your time for the remediation. Our lab manager is there to assist you in creating an individualized program to help meet these needs. Please call to set up a remediation orientation appointment. Only the Adult Basic Education Department can refer you for TABE re-testing. We wish you every success as you begin your program, and we want to be of any assistance throughout your program course of study. The ABE Lab is available for academic support for all students of vocational programs as well as A.S. degree-seeking students. not just for T.A.B.E. remediation.

4 Nails Specialty Vocational Certificate Program Please Read Carefully Step 1 Complete the Nails Specialty Program Application. Step 2 Submit your application as follows: Mail: Heather McDaniel Pensacola State College 1000 College Blvd., Bldg. 12 Pensacola, FL [email protected] Deliver: Building 12, Front Desk Receptionist Step 3 Apply for admission to the College at the Admissions Office on any Pensacola State College Campus. A one-time application fee of $30.00 is required. Step 4 If you are requesting financial aid, please go to the Financial Aid Office in Bldg. 2 on the Pensacola Campus and complete the proper paper work. You may also go online, at to register. The Pell Grant will not cover this program; however, if you need any financial assistance you must apply for a Pell Grant for eligibility determination. For questions regarding financial aid for this program call (850) We cannot process your application until you have completed the above steps. Program applications are considered on a first-come/first-served basis according to the date received. You will be notified via of your selection for the class. Once a class is filled, the remaining applicants will be given priority for the next available seat in the Nails Specialty class. If you are a student who has special needs because of learning disabilities or any other type of disability, please identify yourself at the time of application so that any accommodations you require may be considered. 5 Nails Specialty Program Entrance Requirements You must: Submit the Pensacola State College Admissions Application to the Registrar s Office, Bldg. 2. A $30 one-time application fee is required if you have never attended collegecredit or vocational-credit courses at Pensacola State College. If you have attended courses at Pensacola State College, but it has been more than twelve (12) months ago, you will need to complete and submit an updated Admissions Application; however, another admissions fee is not required. Submit your completed Nails Specialty Program Application. Financial Aid This program is approved by the Veteran s Administration and various other funding sources. The Nails Specialty Program is not Pell eligible; however, in order to receive other vocational funding for which you may qualify, you must apply for a Pell Grant. Cost of Program (All costs listed are subject to change.) In-State Tuition: (FL) $ / (AL) $ for 240 clock hours of instruction. Out-of-State Tuition: $2, Books: $ Uniform (Purple Scrubs): $ Lab Fees: $ Kit: $ Books must be purchased before the first day of class. Books are available at the Pensacola State College Bookstore as well as other sources. You must have your books on the first day of class. A class supply list will be given to you on the first day of class. Dress Code Professional-uniform dress code (purple scrubs, tennis shoes, name badge) as specified by the Nails Specialty Program requirements. You must be in uniform on the first day of class. Completion Requirements Complete 240 hours of continuous study and practice, during which you must fulfill the minimum number of services and service hours required by the State Board of Cosmetology. Maintain a C average in both theory and practical classes. Adhere to school and program policies, dress and grooming codes, and Pensacola State College Code of Ethics.
