Cisco Unified Communications on the Cisco Unified Computing System Cisco is introducing software application versions from the Cisco Unified Communications portfolio (Versions 8.0(2) and later) that are supported for production use on specific configurations of VMware vsphere 4 (ESXi 4.0 or later), specific Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) servers, and specific storage configurations. Cisco UCS B200 M1 Blade Servers with third-party Fibre Channel storage area network (SAN)-attached disk arrays are supported. Available applications include Cisco Unified Communications Manager, the Cisco Unity application, Cisco Unity Connection, Cisco Unified Presence, Cisco Unified Contact Center Express, Cisco Unified Contact Center Enterprise, Cisco Unified Customer Voice Portal, and Cisco Unified IP Interactive Voice Response (IP IVR). VMware ESXi 4.0 or later is required. Application co-residency is also supported; refer to http://www.cisco.com/go/uc-virtualized for details. Cisco UCS C210 M1 General-Purpose Rack-Mount Servers with specific configurations of either direct attached storage (DAS) or Fibre Channel SAN are supported. Available applications (depending on the configuration selected) include Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Cisco Unity Connection, and Cisco Unified Contact Center Express. VMware ESXi 4.0 or later is required. Application co-residency is supported only on certain configurations; refer to http://www.cisco.com/go/uc-virtualized for details. Cisco Unified Communications applications require use of VMware vsphere 4 (ESXi 4.0 or later) to support Cisco Unified Computing System hardware. No applications run or install directly on the server hardware; all applications run only as VMware virtual machines. Cisco Unified Communications does not support a physical, bare-metal, or nonvirtualized installation on this server hardware. Cisco Unified Computing System configurations for Cisco Unified Communications must follow the criteria listed in this document to be supported. Deviations from reference configurations are not supported unless such support is explicitly indicated. Also note that Cisco Unified Communications applications require specific minimum versions to be supported on these platforms. Two procurement options are available for a Cisco Unified Computing System server when used with Cisco Unified Communications: A preset reference configuration, available as a single Cisco Collaboration part number: This option supports only a single fixed-server configuration, and for Cisco UCS B200 M1 does not include any other components such as blade-server chassis, fabric extenders, or fabric interconnect switches (a certified Cisco channel partner must order these components using the Netformx DesignXpert ordering tool UCS Advisor). It provides simplicity of ordering, such as for deployments that consist mostly of Cisco Unified Communications software. Note that some server configurations, such as Cisco UCS C210 M1 Reference Configuration 3, are supported but not offered through this procurement option. A build-to-order configuration, available as a set of data center part numbers: This option supports all Cisco Unified Computing System components and a broader range of configuration options. A certified Cisco channel partner must order the server and all other components using the Netformx DesignXpert ordering tool UCS Advisor. The following sections provide Cisco part numbers for both options, as well as support policies for configurations that differ from the reference configurations through use of the build-to-order option. Note that for both procurement options, the part numbers ordered are independent of the Cisco Unified Communications applications and versions installed to run as VMware virtual machines on the server hardware. Cisco Unified Communications Approved Hardware Configuration Requirements Table 1 lists supported Cisco Unified Computing System platforms for the Cisco Unified Communications applications listed previously. Note that server models and generations not listed in Table 1 are not supported. Special Ordering Instructions for Cisco Unified Computing System A Cisco Unified Computing System B-Series Blade Server deployment contains several components (blade server, blade-server chassis, fabric extender, and fabric interconnect switch), without which you do not have a complete solution. For Cisco Unified Communications application deployments you plan to run on this hardware, you must make sure that all solution components are in place. You must use the Netformx DesignXpert ordering tool UCS Advisor to make sure that all other required components in addition to the blade server are in place and correctly ordered. These solutions have several other components besides the server hardware, such as 10-Gigabit Ethernet networking, Fibre Channel storage network access, and third-party disk arrays. You must follow solution design guidelines and prerequisites to help ensure a complete solution and customer success. Refer to http://www.cisco.com/go/uc-virtualized and http://www.cisco.com/go/srnd for more details. Both Cisco UCS B-Series Blade Server and C-Series Rack-Mount Server deployments require specific VMware software to support Cisco Unified Communications. Requirements are described in the following section. Required VMware License Each populated CPU socket per server requires a license for VMware ESXi 4.0 or later (that is, licensing is based on physical CPUs, not physical CPU cores or virtual CPU cores). VMware ESX, regardless of version, is not supported for servers hosting Cisco Unified Communications, but a VMware ESX cluster can contain VMware ESXi servers running Cisco Unified Communications. Versions of VMware ESXi prior to 4.0 are not supported, nor are nonvirtualized, physical, or bare-metal installations. VMware ESXi is sold in several editions with different levels of feature support. VMware ESXi Single Server is the minimum edition required for the solution to work, but an edition that supports advanced, multihost management with VMware vcenter - Standard, Advanced, Enterprise, or Enterprise Plus - is strongly recommended. Note that breadth of VMware feature support varies by Cisco Unified Communications version. Use of the Cisco Nexus 1000V Switch is not mandatory but is recommended. If this switch is used, it requires VMware ESXi Enterprise Plus Edition. The required VMware license can be is ordered from the following sources: From Cisco, as a preset per-server Cisco Collaboration part number: This part number is separate from server part numbers and is listed in Table 1. You can use the same part number for Cisco UCS B-Series and C-Series deployments. Note that for the Cisco UCS B-Series, you need to add this part number to a group of data center part numbers ordered through the Netformx DesignXpert ordering tool UCS Advisor. From Cisco, as an option under a build-to-order data center part number for the server: Note that for the Cisco UCS B-Series, you must order this option through the Netformx DesignXpert ordering tool UCS Advisor. From VMware itself: With this option, you can also take advantage of any existing customer licensing arrangement with VMware. Required Storage Cisco Unified Communications currently requires the following storage configuration for solutions based on the Cisco UCS C210 M1: VMware software installed on local disks (DAS) for all reference configurations. Cisco Unified Communications software installed on local disks (DAS) for Reference Configurations 1 and 2 or on a Fibre Channel SAN for Reference Configuration 3; policy for supported SAN options is the same as for the Cisco UCS B200 M1 described in the following paragraphs. No other storage options for Cisco UCS C210 M1 servers are supported at this time. Cisco Unified Communications currently requires the following storage configuration for solutions based on the Cisco UCS B200 M1: VMware software installed on the blade-server local disks (DAS): Refer to the section titled Cisco UCS B200 M1: Reference Configuration 1 (UCS-B200M1-VCS1) later in this document for supported local-disk options. Cisco Unified Communications software to be installed on Fibre Channel SAN-attached disk arrays: Refer to the following for supported SAN options: The storage solution must be supported by the Cisco Unified Computing System. The storage solution must be supported by VMware. For example, refer to the SAN/Storage tab at http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:ie- SearchBox&ie=&oe=. The storage solution must meet the performance and capacity requirements described at http://www.cisco.com/go/uc-virtualized. Generally, high-speed and low-latency tier-1 storage is required, with enough physical storage allocated to handle items such as the Cisco Unified Communications virtual 2010 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All Solution Overview machine logical volumes, overhead for the VMware file system and tools, and overhead for configuration of Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID). other details, such as configuration of RAID or disk technology options on the storage array (such as Serial Advanced Technology Attachment [SATA], Serial Attached SCSI [SAS], or Fibre Channel) are up to you. However, note that on local disks (DAS), many of these details are prescribed. Cisco UCS B200 M1: Reference Configuration 1 (UCS-B200M1-VCS1) This reference configuration is sized to support up to four virtual machines per blade server and two virtual CPU cores per virtual machine; each virtual machine has the same capacity and performance, or better, as a Cisco MCS 7845-I3 Media Convergence Server used for Cisco Unified Communications Manager. Overall capacity of this bladeserver configuration depends on what co-resident applications you deploy, both for virtual-machine quantity per server and user quantity per virtual machine. For example, when the configuration is set up properly for Cisco Unified Communications Manager server consolidation, you can deploy up to four virtual machines per blade server, with each virtual machine supporting up to 7500 devices. If you use multiple servers, up to 30,000 devices per cluster can be supported. At this time, use of more powerful blade-server hardware does not translate to higher capacity per virtual machine or more than four virtual machines per blade server. You have the following options for ordering a supported blade-server configuration: You can order the configuration as a preset Cisco Collaboration part number, as listed in Table 1. The components listed in Table 2 are shipped with this configuration. You can order the configuration as a build-to-order set of data center part numbers. If you want to deviate from the reference configuration in Table 2, here is the support policy: Server model: At this time, only the Cisco UCS B200 M1 is supported for Cisco Unified Communications. Other blade-server models, such as the Cisco UCS B200 M2 Blade Server, B250 M1 or M2 Extended Memory Blade Server, or B440 M1 High-Performance Blade Server, are not supported at this time. Processor: The CPU quantity must match the quantities listed in Tables 1 and 2. The CPU type must either match the types in Tables 1 and 2 or be a more powerful option (that is, Intel Xeon or later architecture with better performance as measured by benchmarks such as PassMarks). CPU options that are less powerful than the configurations in Tables 1 and 2 are not supported. Memory: A minimum of 32 GB of memory per server is required, but you can install more. Cisco Unified Communications does not mandate memory-module density, quantity, or speed. If you install more than 32 GB, you should align with best practices of the Cisco Unified Computing System for higher-performance configurations. Local disk drives: Local disk drives are used only for installation of VMware software. Cisco Unified Communications applications must be supported on a Fibre Channel SAN-attached disk array to be supported. Two local disks on the blade are required for redundancy. You can use any size of local disk. All other storage options (NAS, installation of unified communications applications on local disk drives, or diskless servers for VMware boot from SAN) are not currently supported. Mezzanine adapter: You can use any adapter for Cisco Unified Communications, according to what is required for connectivity to your 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN and Fibre Channel SAN.
