Operating System: vstac OS 6.5 D. Alternates: None 2.02 DESCRIPTION A. The Converged Video Server/Storage Appliance ( converged appliance ) shall be a 2RU, 12-drive stackable scale-out appliance that offers both virtual server and scale out SAN shared storage functionality for high performance, non-disruptive scaling, high-availability and energy efficiency. The term scale-out refers to the ability to increase overall system capacity and/or performance (storage, memory, network interface and CPU/compute resources) seamlessly by simply adding additional appliances (nodes) and automatically balancing resources and loads across the added nodes. Scale-up refers to adding individual resources to a single node. The ability to scale-out is important when designing video surveillance infrastructure as many variables can influence system storage, memory and CPU requirements simultaneously: adding cameras, increased video resolution, increased or changing scene activity or alarm events, etc. B. The converged appliance shall concurrently run local applications in a VMware vsphere ESXi Hypervisor virtual environment and provide shared system resources that scale out as additional appliances are added such that: 1. Separate physical servers are not required. 2. Separate physical failover servers are not required. 3. Applications running on each appliance have access to the combined capacity of the disk drive storage in all appliances that are clustered together. 4. Applications running on each appliance have access to the combined solid state write cache in all appliances that are clustered together. 5. Applications running on each converged appliance have access to the iscsi bandwidth of all appliances that are configured as a functional array together. 6. Applications running on a converged appliance array have simultaneous access to storage volumes on separate arrays. C. Read and write cache 4. Memory 5. CPU Usable storage capacity will depend on the configured RAID level B. System capacity shall scale linearly and non-disruptively by adding equally configured converged appliances to form a converged appliance array configuration, consisting of 3-12 converged appliances. 1. Appliances shall be capable of being configured as a functional array to support up to: a. 864TB iscsi SAN storage b. 240Gbps aggregated bandwidth c. 12 parallel RAID controllers d. 768 GB RAM read/write cache e. 600 GB SSD write cache The minimum number of converged appliances in an array/cluster is 3 to ensure high availability and failover capabilities, with a maximum of 12. A converged appliance may also function in a stand-alone mode. Capacity specifications are provided for a 12-appliance array. For arrays with fewer than 12 appliances, the following specifications should be adjusted appropriately: SAN Storage (configurable up to 72TB per appliance) RAID controllers (one per appliance) iscsi Bandwidth (20 Gbps per appliance) RAM Read/Write Cache (user configurable 2GB-64GB per appliance) SSD Write Cache (50GB per appliance) July
6 Storage from multiple arrays may be accessed by a single application, theoretically enabling unlimited storage capacity 2. Disk and RAID sets shall be automatically configured without user intervention. 3. Capacity scaling shall be non-disruptive allowing new capacity to be dynamically added to the system without interrupting access to data. 4. New appliances added to an array shall automatically contribute and load balance capacity, bandwidth and RAID resources. 5. Physical capacity added to the system shall be configurable into new volumes or added to existing defined volumes without the need to interrupt data access. C. The array shall prevent any single point of failure from causing loss of data or interrupting access to data. B. Virtual Application Server Failover 1. The converged appliance system shall deliver automatic end-to-end failover for all video management software and all scale-out system resources deployed within the array, without the need to purchase additional licenses or software. 2. The system shall protect against loss of data during simultaneous failure of one converged appliance and up to two disks. C. Network Redundancy 1. The converged appliance system shall protect against loss of a networking path between servers and storage, including network interface card, cables and switches. 2. The system shall provide multi-path protection for iscsi connections. The paths shall be active/active and load balanced for normal operation. July
7 The following network design considerations should be noted when deploying a SAN: 1. Pivot3 vstac Appliances have two Network Interface Card (NIC) ports dedicated for iscsi SAN connectivity. Each SAN NIC port must be on a different subnet (no routers). 2. Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE for vstac VDI appliances) is required for SAN switch connections. The SAN network should be capable of operation at 10GbE for all appliances without additional appliance hardware options. 3. For a system with no single points of failure it is required to use two physically separate switches for the SAN, each dedicated to a different subnet. This protects the vstac Array from a single switch failure and provides the most predictable performance. D. Disk Fault Tolerance 1. The converged appliance system shall provide dynamically alterable data protection capability for the following levels of performance: a. RAID 6X - 5 simultaneous disk failures or 2 disks and 1 appliance failure b. RAID 6E - 3 simultaneous disk failures or 1 disk and 1 appliance failure c.
