IEEE Regions 1&2 Student Activities Conference At the competition, MC s robot, McBot, was able to make its way around the center of the maze (shown to the left), which was unknown to it before the day of the competition MC was one of fifteen (15) colleges and Universities, including schools like Drexel University, Pennsylvania State University and Ohio, University that participated in this competition. MC was also the only two-year college among the twenty-nine (29) schools present at the conference.

MC Students Win Science Observation Award at National Student Solar Spectrograph Competition Above: Some preliminary solar data taken with the student built spectrometer. The dark lines visible in the spectrum are the Fraunhofer lines. Shop Manager Bill Schuster and student Michael Satinu machining the spectrometer box. Students Yoseph Feseha and Lampouguin Douti work on aligning the spectrometer optics. Left: Student Michael Satinu machines a piece for the sspectrometer. Montgomery College student team Lampouguin Yenkoidiok Douti, Yoseph Feseha, Michael Satinu, John Silk along with their faculty advisors, Dr. Carrie Fitzgerald and Dr. Ryan Fitzgerald won the Science Observations award, one of four awards in the National Student Solar Spectrograph Competition! This was a national competition where students competed not only against students at four-year universities, but also students who used this competition as part of their senior research projects. The judges noted the professionalism and knowledge of our team members, and, in particular, the rigor displayed in relating the spectrograph design to a scientific mission. Each of the students will receive a $3,000 scholarship and travel to the NASA IRIS launch. the Montgomery College Foundation provided the funds that allowed our students to travel to Montana.

Ngan Le, a bioengineering student, with the guidance of her research advisor and mentor, Dr. Eugene Li, studied the raindrop problem. Her research focused on the effect of external forces on a raindrops motion. Ngan s research resulted in a paper and presentations at three conferences the Joint Mathematics Meetings, the Beacon Conference at Northampton Community College and the American Association of Physics Teachers Conference

Eight students and a faculty member, Professor David Bern, from the Montgomery College Student Branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) participated in the 2013 IEEE Student Activities Conference. The students participated in the First Energy s Project Showcase, the Ethics Competition and the Micromouse Competition.
