In addition, you will also still be able to take advantage of our popular support programs, such as AccountExpress, Pure Advantage, Overhaul Protection for Trucks, and financing from Cat Financial. Some of the Extended Service Coverage programs are even transferable to a new owner. And when it comes to parts quality, you will still have access to genuine Caterpillar engine parts that are designed and manufactured to work together efficiently as a complete system with the designed-in strength to be rebuilt for a second life. Although the care and precision that go into manufacturing Cat parts may not be visible to the naked eye, test after test identifies critical design advantages in Cat engine parts compared to will-fit parts. In addition, design updates are included and manufacturing techniques are continually improved to ensure you receive state-of-the-art new and Cat Reman parts every time. Customer Profiles The Engines Superior support By any standard, Jim Aartman Inc. operates a large fleet. We have 475 trucks, Jim Aartman says, that operate in all 48 contiguous states. With that many trucks on the road, dependable truck engines and superior product support are vital. That s why all the company s trucks are powered by Cat C13 engines. One of the main reasons we prefer Cat engines is the commitment to customer satisfaction from Caterpillar We looked at all of the engine manufacturers and feel that Caterpillar definitely has the best nationwide service and parts availability. Rolling along Jim Aartman, president and CEO, Jim Aartman Inc., Ripon, Calif. East-West Express Inc. is a high-mileage company. We typically put 220,000 to 250,000 miles a year on each of our 48 trucks, all of which have Cat C15 engines, Richard Cangemi says. We re pretty much a one-lane carrier between the Southeast and the West Coast and rely exclusively on team drivers, most of whom are husband-and-wife teams. of Choice and our Cat Dealer, Aartman says. Their support staffs are second to none. In addition, the availability of Cat parts is outstanding. With as many trucks as we have, and because we keep our trucks a little longer than most companies, our entire operation is geared around parts availability. If someone asked me why they should purchase a Cat engine, he says, I d tell them first and foremost, it s reliability. We ve never had any complaints from our drivers about Caterpillar engines, and none of them has ever requested that we purchase another brand of engine. As a long-haul carrier, we depend on reliable engines. Our Cat C15 engines run continuously seven to eight days in a row and we ve never had any problems. Richard Cangemi, president, East-West Express Inc., Villa Rica, Ga. Always available Some In addition to the excellent fuel mileage Boyd Bros. Transportation Inc. gets from its Cat C13 engines, it also appreciates the Caterpillar nationwide network of dealers and maintenance facilities. We re an irregular route carrier, Chris Cooper says, with an average haul length of 650 miles. Because we re not on a specific route every day, of our drivers have told us the response they are getting from the C13 engines is better than they were getting from the larger engines they had previously used. Chris Cooper, general manager, Boyd Bros. Transportation Inc., Clayton, Ala. Working hard Southern Ag Carriers Inc. works its trucks hard. We re constantly encountering stiff headwinds and steep slopes, John Yordy says. That s one reason we use Cat C15 engines. We also prefer a bigger engine because we gross out on most of our loads. a network of dealers and maintenance facilities is vital to our operation. Without the Caterpillar network, we wouldn t be able to operate. Having a nationwide network also is important as Boyd Bros. Transportation continues to expand geographically from its base in the Southeast. In addition, we specify Cat engines for their resale value, he adds. We have learned that we always get more for a truck if it has a Caterpillar engine in it. Caterpillar engines have always been on the leading edge of technology. They are built better and last longer. John Yordy, director of maintenance, Southern Ag Carriers Inc., Albany, Ga. 6 7

Customer Profiles 8 MASTERS OF FUEL ECONOMY Equipment and training return big dividends The engines of choice for Benny Whitehead Inc. are 430 hp Cat C13 engines. We began using them to save on weight and to achieve greater fuel mileage, Benny Whitehead says. Our entire fleet is now equipped with C13 engines and our drivers and service technicians are very pleased with them. Our Cat Messenger keeps drivers informed The cab-mounted Cat Messenger provides a real-time readout of a driver s average speed, idle time, rpms, miles per gallon and more. It helps our drivers see where they can improve, Randy McEwen says. When a driver first uses it, I ask them to estimate their percentage of idle time. They ll usually say about 15 percent. The readout often shows closer to 40 percent. But the next time they take a load out, it s probably closer to 15 percent. Cat Messenger reveals a lot of habits that drivers The company instructs drivers not to operate over 1,400 rpm, to shift at 1,100 rpm, to coast when possible, to run at a reasonable speed, and to limit idle time. The firm provides drivers with weekly performance reports and has a bonus program to reward those who achieve excellent fuel mileage. fleet average is above 7.0 mpg. With the miles we run, we save more than $1.6 million a year on fuel compared to companies averaging 5.5 mpg. You can be 50 rpm out of the sweetspot and cost yourself half-a-gallon per mile. Keep the rpms low to achieve maximum fuel mileage. Randy McEwen, president, McEwen Trucking Inc., Corunna, Mich. Benny Whitehead, president, Benny Whitehead Inc., Eufaula, Ala. didn t realize they had. So it really helps them improve their performance and enables us to achieve great fuel mileage. Today s fleets need drivers who will embrace technology and follow new ways of thinking. That s where the savings are. Untrained drivers can cost up to 1.5 miles per gallon or more. Demonstration vehicle validates new technology We When some of its customers began to have concerns about the fuel economy and performance of 2007 EPA-compliant engines, Allstate Leasing decided to create a demonstration truck powered by a Cat C15 engine with ACERT Technology that it felt would be readily accepted throughout its customer base by providing the best fuel economy available. believe that our customers will realize a 0.5 to 1.0 mile-per-gallon improvement with Cat Engines with ACERT Technology compared to previous-generation equipment. Gary Le Loup, general manager, Allstate Leasing, Eagan, Minn. Training and tires boost fuel mileage For Keim TS, driver training is a key to enhancing fuel mileage and improving safety. We have our own trainers, our own instructional course, and our own expectations, Stan Keim says. The course has evolved over 10 years, and Keim TS works closely with its insurance company in making modifications and updates. They also utilize training materials provided by Caterpillar, including CDs and DVDs. One driver told me how he lugged his engine down to 1,000 rpm climbing over the Arbuckle Mountains in Oklahoma and got 7.5 miles per gallon. Stan Keim, president and CEO, Keim TS, Sabetha, Kan. We provide the demonstration truck to our customers and allow them to operate it for a week or so, Gary Le Loup says. The idea is for each customer to take the vehicle and see how it performs in his or her operation. We know what this truck can do and we want our customers to see the advantages for themselves. It has been very successful. Our retention rate is great, our fuel mileage has improved, and our safety record is excellent, Keim says. Keim TS also enhances fuel mileage by using supersingle tires. We currently have super-singles on our entire fleet of trucks and trailers, Keim says. They not only keep our tire costs down, they also improve our fuel mileage by about a half-mile per gallon. 9

Will you have a dealer PSSR or factory engine service rep to contact for consideration after warranty or extended service coverage expires? How many dedicated engine bays does the engine servicing dealer have? If you have an engine-related problem, will you have to go through your local truck OEM for service? Who is authorized to work on this engine? How many authorized service locations can you count on in the U.S., Canada and Mexico? How many locations are available in the areas where you travel? How much labor is associated with changing an EGR valve? How long are the turbo, water pump and injectors covered under a product with EGR? Extended Service Coverage (ESC) Does the ESC have a deductible? If so, is it by year or occurrence? Does the engine manufacturer offer any coverage past five years? Past 500,000 miles? What coverage is offered on turbo, water pump and injectors? Is ESC available on the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)? Are insurance packages available on used engines? Reliability What is the B50 or B10 average life to overhaul? What are the suggested maintenance intervals? What is the oil sump capacity? Engine Life What is your current trade-in cycle? Would you be willing to adjust your trade-in cycle to under 500,000 miles to avoid major engine repairs sometimes associated with EGR? Other Key Questions How much fuel will your fleet save by running an engine such as the Cat C13, which has the same horsepower and torque as some competitors yet is 400 pounds lighter? Are you going to pre-buy to avoid the introduction of 2010 technology? Have you factored in the impact used-truck demand has on residual value? Do you think a reliable and fuel efficient engine with proven technology will be in demand in the future?
