1.0 Aviation and Aerospace Technician Competencies Based on input from numerous employers and industry associations across the nation, 180 Skills has developed curricula that serves as the Body of Knowledge for the Aviation and Aerospace Technician Certification (AATC). We have mapped these Competencies to the current SCS credentials and identified the additional skills that could be codified under a nationally-portable, third-party-validated, AATC. The AATC consists of seven stackable technical certificates that can be combined to create an ATA degree in Manufacturing and Material Technology (92 credits) or an AAS-T degree in Material Science Technology (90 credits). These technical certificates build skills in the areas of Aircraft Assembly, Electrical Assembler, Composite Repair, CNC, Tool Making and Quality Assurance. The duration of each certificate program ranges from 4 to 8 weeks. Upon completion students are fully prepared for entry level jobs in the aerospace industry. The Aerospace Certificate Program is delivered as blended learning with asynchronous, selfpaced online courses followed by instructor lead, hands-on classroom sessions. The use of asynchronous online content allows advanced learners to speed through or bypass instruction that is redundant. Novices can slow their own progress through the content, eliminating frustration with themselves, their fellow learners, and the course. In these ways, e- learning reaches a maximum number of participants with a maximum range of learning styles, preferences, and needs. 4 of 31
2.0 12 Weeks to Employment The AATC program design enables the students (displaced workers, workers retooling their skills) to attain the skills required for a living wage job in 12 weeks. The minimum educational requirement to qualify for a job interview in the aerospace manufacturing industry is two technical certificates. The minimum requirement for the program is a high school diploma or a GED equivalent. All students must enroll with the respective academic institution in their region. All exams and lab work are performed on-site at the academic institution. The 12 week program of study is as follows: Four weeks of online, asynchronous study in the Core Skills program. o Final proctored exam score of 90%. Four weeks of online asynchronous study in one of the six technical areas. o Final proctored exam score of 90%. Four weeks full-time of on-site lab work. 5 of 31
3.0 Program Details The AATC program is delivered by our academic partners as seven unique technical certificates. All students are required to complete or test out of the Aerospace Manufacturing Core certificate. The remaining certificates are chosen based upon the industry demands. Each of the certificates is completed in 4 to 8 weeks. The breakdown for each certificate is shown below. 3. Manufacturing Paperwork This course provides an overview of various manufacturing documentation and database processes and procedures. 4. Engineering Processes This course provides an overview of Lean manufacturing concepts and procedures as well as an introduction to the process requirements in aerospace manufacturing. 5. Precision Instruments This course provides an introduction to the various precision measuring instruments and their correct, proper and safe use, in aerospace manufacturing. 6. Hand Tools and Fasteners This course provides an introduction to the various hand tools used in the aerospace industry. This course also introduced the student to a several aerospace fasteners including temporary fasteners, bolts and lock bolts, Hi-Loks and rivets. 7. Blueprints & Picture Sheets This course provides an introduction to the types, interpretation and scaling of blueprints and picture sheets used in the manufacturing process. 8. Bonding & Grounding This course provides an overview of electrical bonding and grounding theory, required tools and procedures and final quality control. 9. Intro to Composites This course provides an introduction to a variety of common materials used in fiber / matrix composites, their safety considerations and general properties which can be achieved with different manufacturing and orientation procedures. 10. Wire Installation Drawings This course provides knowledge to identify the concept of airplane specific configuration table, module parts list, distinguish between a production illustration and an assembly and installation drawing and enable an interpretation of electrical production illustration drawing sheets. 6. Wire Bundle Installation This course provides technical knowledge of the components of acceptable wire bundle installation and the skills necessary to complete a wire bundle installation as an electrical assembler. 7. Electrical Ground Jumpers This course provides technical knowledge of electrical ground jumpers and the skills necessary to complete ground jumper installation as an electrical assembler. 8. 2. Composites Manufacturing I and II This course provides specific technical knowledge of the different processes and procedures of manufacturing composites. Topics include hand lay-up, vacuum bagging, curing, resin transfer molding, filament winding, automated tape lay-up, compression molding and pultrusion. This course also provides specific knowledge about the unique health hazards and required safety practices associated with these procedures. 3. Composite Repair This course provides specific technical knowledge and skills necessary to understand and be able to demonstrate the processes and procedures to repair composites such as surface, potted, taper sanded and bolted repairs. Other topics include NDI processes, quality inspection, roles and responsibilities of the engineer, inspector and technician, identifying sources of damage, different repair techniques, and FOD sources. 4. Introduction to Quality Assurance This course provides specific technical knowledge and skills necessary to understand QA s role within the production system. Basic Roles and Responsibilities This course prepares the student for their role as a quality assurance associate. 3. Statistical Process Control This course provides the specific technical knowledge and skills necessary to utilize the tools of SPC to evaluate manufacturing processes. This includes the collection and analysis of production data to assess process abilities. 4. Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing This course provides specific knowledge and skills necessary to interpret and apply the principles of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing as they apply to the manufacture of products. 6. Precision Measurement Tools This course provides an introduction to the various precision measuring instruments and their correct, proper and safe use, in aerospace manufacturing. 7. Conflict Resolution This course provide the skills required to understand conflict in the workplace and presents the student with best practices for handling conflict when it does occur. 8. Technical Writing This courses prepares the student to be able to communicate clearly and precisely in written reports.
