Warrandyte High School Careers Events Term 2 Year 10 12 lunchtime guest speakers: Australian Defence Forces - Tuesday May 25-12.50pm in the library classroom Year 12 excursion to RMIT University (City Campus) - Monday May 17, 10am 3pm, cost $13. This is the first stage of the post-school transition process where students will be informed by a panel of experts in the tertiary sectors both on the range of pathways available and application procedures. Year 10 Work Experience June 21 25. It has been fantastic to witness the wide range of placements our students have already secured, including the police force, MCG, World Vision, media (radio, television, production companies & print media), architectural firms, engineers, the building trades, hospitals, motor mechanics, Australian Defence Forces, Melbourne Aquarium, dance companies and the music & entertainment industry. Students have until May 31 to finalise their placements 2. Year 10 Careers Swinburne TAFE Apprenticeship & Traineeship Taster Day Croydon Campus Thursday June 10 11.30 3pm Students who would like to participate in two practical workshops on this day must see me ASAP as places fill very quickly. This day is optional and free but you have to arrange your own transport to and from the TAFE. Participation in this event will look great on your resume if you intend applying for a New Apprenticeship (traditional apprenticeships and traineeships) in the future. Australian Defence Force GAP Program 2011 Year 12 students only. This program provides an opportunity for exiting Year 12 students (within the previous two years), to experience continuous military training & lifestyle before going onto study or a selected career. It is a one-year experience. There is no guarantee of ongoing employment beyond the 12 months but it definitely is a possibility. Full applications are made on line May 1 31. The process will take about 15 minutes. In 2011 there will not be any air force vacancies, only navy and army. Only the army will specify particular job vacancies see website, (with the navy, applications are for the program). Plumbing apprenticeship vacancy a local plumbing firm specializing in commercial plumbing is looking to take on an apprentice in the next 3 months. Applicants must have passed Year 11. Careers in Sports Medicine seminars: Hear practitioner presentations about their profession, education pathways and university information. Considering a career in Surveying?? Since the Egyptians built pyramids, surveyors have been working out where things go and determining where boundaries belong. We need surveyors to build roads and cities, define property, find and mine resources and measure changes in the earth. Problem: Not enough surveyors to meet the demand. Australian surveyors are among the best in the world, with work opportunities from Antarctica to Dubai. Bookings: www.monash.edu.au/atmonash 11. Dietetics at Latrobe University (Bundoora Campus) will introduce a Bachelor of Health Science/Masters of Dietetic Practice in 2011. Prerequisites: study score of at least 30 in ESL or 25 in any other English and 25 in two of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics (any), Physical Education or Physics. Also available at Monash and at Deakin in their Masters program. 12. Occupational Therapy at Australian Catholic University (ACU) ACU will introduce the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at the Melbourne campus in 2011. Info: Contact Future Students on 1800 275 228. Also available at Deakin, La Trobe and Monash Universities. 13. You want to be a paramedic? This has become a popular option for many students and is available at the following universities: Australian Catholic University (Ballarat campus) has the double degree of Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine. Last year s ATAR was 80.35. La Trobe (Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura and Shepparton) have the Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Paramedic Practice. The ATAR for the Bendigo campus was 77.85 (Years 2, 3 and 4 of the course are conducted at Bendigo). Monash (Peninsula campus) has the Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic) and also a double degree combining paramedics with nursing. The ATAR for the double degree last year was 92.70. Victoria University (St Albans campus) has the Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic). Last year s ATAR was 80.65. It would be wise to consider studying nursing, either as part of a double degree or as a single degree in addition to paramedics, as this gives a wider choice of career options. 3

14. Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) Applications have opened for this test. If you are in Year 12 and plan to apply for Medicine, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy/Commerce or Pharmacy at Monash University or for Oral Health (Therapy or Hygiene) at University of Melbourne you must sit the UMAT as part of the application process. Several interstate universities require the UMAT as well. Registration deadline: 5pm AEST Friday 4 June 2010; Test date: Wednesday 28 July 2010. See: http://umat.acer.edu.au for details. 15. Interested in Engineering? The University of Melbourne s Engineering School is holding three lectures for first year engineering students to which interested Year 12 students are invited. Year 12 students each year KPMG (Chartered Accountants), recruits Year 12 students to participate in their cadetship program. This program is an opportunity to combine work with study and will open the door to an exciting and rewarding career.
