Gulbenkian Advanced Medical Training Programme The Gulbenkian Advanced Medical Training Programme (pgfma) was set up in 2008, being aimed at fostering and supporting the development of high-quality medical research by practising clinicians. The first edition of the programme started on 1 October 2008 and the 2nd edition on 1 October 2009. In its first two years of existence, a total of 20 students were admitted to the programme [10 full-time and 10 part-time students, three of whom (full-time students) are sponsored by the Champalimaud Foundation]. With the exception of the Cancer course (two weeks at ipatimup in Porto), all courses lasted for one week. Assessment of students Upon completion of their educational programme, the 10 students were interviewed and assessed by the evaluation committee, at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (26 March, 2009). Research-activities The five part-time students returned to their respective health institutions as interns/phd students, now receiving financial support from the Ministries of Health and Science, Technology and Higher Education. Three of the five full-time students decided to leave the country and attend foreign institutions for the development of their PhD projects, while the other two preferred to remain in Portugal. First quarter of the programme s second year (October-December 2009) The 10 students admitted to the programme s second edition began their training programme on 1 October 2009 with an opening lecture given by Hanno Pjil (University of Leiden) at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (igc). From October to December 2009, seven formal postgraduate courses were given, as shown below (one week each, except for the course in Gene Expression, which lasted for two weeks). As in the previous edition of the programme, the Statistics course was held at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto.
