2 PART A: Introduction The CAIR Internship program has been developed to empower the Muslim community in the United States. To inform and educate the American public, we must first educate ourselves. This education includes obtaining skills in the area of communications, administration management, non-profit management, outreach, programs and development. Being the CAIR-CA chapter located at the state s capitol, our internship has a special emphasis on government relations. The internship provides a means to complement academic work with practical, vocational experience through professional development, and department support that identifies skills, develops leadership, and addresses critical community needs. The goal of the program is to empower the interns in hopes to further their career goals. This is an unpaid internship. Interns will receive college credit and/or transcript notation if needed. However, it is the responsibility of the intern to file all necessary paperwork in order to obtain credit. Interns are expected to work at least 8 hours a week. Summer interns are required to work 8-10 hours a week, and need to be available on Fridays for Friday outreach. Additionally, interns must be ready to work weekends and evenings, as needed. In order to qualify for an internship, interns must provide for their own travel, living (housing & food), and transportation arrangements. All interns will receive training in all aspects of CAIR s work by rotating in the various departments throughout their internship. Interns will be assigned specific projects relating to their interests and also the current events and projects CAIR-SV is working on. Rotations include the following departments: Government Relations: Responsibilities include organizing meetings with local elected officials as well as statewide legislators to discuss issues affecting the Muslim community, assisting with voter registration campaigns, as well as acting a liaison between CAIR and public officials. Communications/Media: Responsibilities include informing the media about Islamic activities and practices, monitoring the local media, writing editorials, and assisting in issuing the CAIR-SV newsletters. Interns will develop their skills for writing in a journalistic style. Interns will also learn how to effectively engage the community through social media and be responsible for creating posts, updates, tweets, and more to promote and enhance CAIR-SV s image through said mediums. They will also learn how the media works and how to develop press releases and media packets. Outreach/Programming: Responsibilities include organizing events sponsored by CAIR, such as Muslim Day at the Capitol and Capitol Iftar, proposing & creating new material to promote CAIR, and helping out with inquiries by members and guest. Other responsibilities may include acting as a liaison between CAIR and the local Muslim and non-muslim communities, organizing outreach programs with Islamic centers, and developing and implementing strategies to attract individuals to become involved with CAIR. Civil Rights: Responsibilities include assisting the civil rights coordinator in every day functions such as case intake, contacting individuals with civil rights cases, communicating with parties, civil rights research and development, data entry, filing, and other civil rights projects. Operations: In this rotation, the intern will work closely with the Operations Coordinator to maintain office productivity, learn about non-profit organization functions, and work on various projects and tasks assigned by the Coordinator. All interns will be required to do their share of administrative work (filing, copying, answering phones, typing, running errands, etc.) 2
