Health information technicians acquire knowledge about information technology, records management, medicine, management, finance, and law.
The health curriculum is rigorous and practical, allows graduates to engage in lifelong learning and success in their chosen profession. The HIMS program follows a laddered approach that allows students to earn an award at each level of their education. Online learning is reinforced through participation in clinical experiences that provide graduates with real-world professional experiences.

The study of health information management combines two of the fastest growing industries health care and information services. Incorporating the disciplines of medicine, management, finance, information technology (IT) and law into one curriculum, it offers many opportunities for specialization. Health information management and technology jobs are projected for steady employment growth through 2018, with technician opportunities growing by 20 percent.* Among the many factors driving employment in this cutting-edge field are an aging population in need of medical care and increasing regulation of electronic medical records.
Clinical Coder/Auditor Clinical Data Collection & Reporting Specialist Clinical Documentation Specialist Data Informatics Analyst Data Integrity Specialist Document Imaging Coordinator Instructor/Trainer Medical Records & Health Information Technician Quality Improvement Specialist Supervisor Medical Language Specialist/Medical Editor
Electronic Health Records (EHRs)-EHRs allow doctors to electronically keep track of your health information and may enable them to see it when you have a problem even if their office is closed. EHRs also make it easier for your doctor to share information with specialists, so that specialists who need your information have it available when it's needed. ICD-10 transition 2013-ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM/ PCS will bring significant benefits, including clearer and more complete descriptions of diseases as well as more precise details of procedures. This more specific information will improve medical record accuracy, thus promoting patient safety.
CCC is the only public institution in central and eastern Nebraska offering the Health Information Management Services degree/ diploma/certificate. To accommodate Nebraska student s, partnerships have been formed with Southeast Community College and Northeast Community College allowing students to take courses at their local community college and from CCC resulting in graduation from CCC.
