3 DATE: October 15 th, 2010 Southern Network of Specialized Care Making Sure our Practice Makes a Change: Applied Research in the Real World DESCRIPTION: This session will talk about the importance of evaluating the services and practice that we provide for persons with intellectual disabilities. Examples of applied research will be used to determine if programs have produced the quality of life changes that are expected and if policy changes created positive shifts in the lives of those we support. Challenges and benefits of community-based research will be discussed. PRESENTER(S): Dr. Dorothy Griffiths, PhD, Associate Dean of Social Sciences and Professor in the Department of Child and Youth, Studies and the, Centre for Applied Disability Studies Brock University. REGISTERING LINK: DATE: October 20 th, 2010 Two common GI problems in persons with developmental disabilities: GERD and Constipation 10:00 am to 12:00 pm PRESENTER(S): Theresa Broada REGISTERING LINK: DATE: October 21 st, 2010 Northern Network of Specialized Care Early Recognition & Screening of Alzheimer s Disease in People with Down Syndrome DESCRIPTION: People with Down Syndrome are at higher risk for developing Alzheimer s Disease. However, recognizing the early stages of Alzheimer's disease can be difficult. People with Down syndrome have a wide range of health problems as they age, and some of these may mimic or hide the presence of Alzheimer's disease. Also, the usual tests used for diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease do not take into account intellectual ability, verbal and other communication challenges that may make it more difficult to assess people with Down Syndrome. A practical model will be presented outlining the process of establishing an early baseline of cognitive ability, functional behaviour, and medical conditions, with annual follow-up screenings to evaluate changes in these domains. The benefits of early recognition will be discussed as they relate to planning for the individual s future personal and support needs. PRESENTER(S): Don Salmon, M.A., Psychological Associate, and Dr. Andrew Wilson, M.D., FRCP(C) REGISTERING LINK: 3 P age

Individuals impacted by FASD often do not respond to typical behavioural support strategies, leaving the individual affected feeling like a failure and the service provider feeling burned out. In this session, basic practices and a variety of specific strategies thought to be effective are presented. This information is based on FASD research and resources available, to date, and is ideal for front line service providers, managers and/or caregivers. 7 DATE: November 19 th, 2010 Southern Network of Specialized Care Adults with Asperger Syndrome: Creative Psychotherapy & Treatment Approach DESCRIPTION: Few professionals have worked extensively with adults with Asperger Syndrome. Dale Munro is an exception. Based on his recent paper published in a U.S. journal, Dale will focus on effective psychotherapy and other clinical approaches which can greatly improve the lives of this needy, often forgotten, and underserved population. PRESENTER(S): J. Dale Munro, MSW, RSW, FAAIDD, Regional Support Associates REGISTERING LINK: DATE: November 23 rd, 2010 Northern Network of Specialized Care Specific Disabilities and Their Impact on Sexual Expression DESCRIPTION: Researchers are increasingly examining specific diagnoses and syndromes, largely because particular conditions may predispose individuals to unique developmental patterns, behaviours, strengths, or weaknesses. Individuals with developmental disabilities are also more likely to experience physical and medical challenges that interfere with their sexual experience and reproduction. These challenges may be specific to particular types of disabilities or may affect individuals with developmental disabilities as a whole. For example some individuals may display inappropriate sexual behaviour and run into legal difficulties due to inappropriate or offending behaviour, but their behaviour is actually a result of their particular diagnosis. Esteem issues also become relevant when addressing specific disabilities that affect one s secondary sexual characteristics and some disabilities may cause an individual s body to look different from their peers, thus influencing their experience of sexuality education programs. These types of specific sexuality issues will be highlighted in this presentation, focusing on genetic diagnoses such as Down Syndrome, and acquired disabilities such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD); recommendations for optimal support and sex education will be provided PRESENTER(S): Shelly L. Watson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Laurentian University REGISTERING LINK: DATE: November 25 th, 2010 Central Network of Specialized Care / Surrey Place Centre TBD DESCRIPTION: Program focus is School Support Program.
