1 EPI Educator Preparation Institute Course Information EPI 0003 Technology Course Title: EPI0003 Technology 3 credit hours Location: Provided by EPI office ( or ) Time: Saturday classes 9:00 am 1:00 pm or Week night classes 6:00 pm 10:00 pm I. Course Materials: Access to a computer with an internet connection A binder to organize your work A USB flash key memory drive (minimum size 256K) Ear Buds - ⅛ mini stereo You will need to be prepared to download and install specific software packages or free trials identified by the instructor HCC/Blackboard online course materials II. Course Objectives FEAPS for Technology Routinely demonstrates a basic level of technology competency, and ensures that students have opportunities to attain basic technology literacy skills. Uses technology tools that enhance learning opportunities that are aligned with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. Models legal and ethical uses of technology and is knowledgeable of Copyright Laws & Fair-use Guidelines for educators. Identifies and uses standard electronic media to provide instruction at appropriate student skill level. Uses technology to construct teaching materials and learning activities. Uses technology productivity tools to monitor and manage student learning. Teach students to use available computers and other forms of technology as they relate to curricular activities. Integrates authentic tasks and provides increased opportunities for independent learning for all students through the use of technology tools. Reviews and recommends educational software tools for instruction. 1

2 Participates in collaboration via technology to support learning. Utilizes accessible and assistive technology to provide curriculum access to those students who need additional support to access the information provided in the general education curriculum as available at each school site. Investigate the International Technology Standards (ISTE) and introduce the NETS-S, NETS-T and NETS-A standards. Create a rubric for expected outcomes of a digital presentation. Create a sample PowerPoint presentation and practice embedding a document, graphic, picture, sound and YouTube video. Explore the use of Action buttons to specifically navigate to different slides in the presentation. Software Pitch PowerPoint Understanding Presentation Software: SmartBoard o Introduce SmartBoard Tools Understanding Presentation software: Prezi o Introduce Prezi Tutorial ntroduce and practice with using SmartBoard Tools Establish a Prezi account and view the Prezi tutorial 1 eactivity: Digital Plagiarism (Rights and Responsibilities) NETS-A and NETS-T Standards Discussion Question Thoughts What do students need to know about Digital Plagiarism How can teachers help students understand the issues of Digital Plagiarism How can schools encourage students to appropriately document their Internet research source of information Investigate the following web sites: 1. Orange Journal: Digital Plagiarism: The Role of Society and Technology a Plagiarism.org a. Discuss how the student currently views the use of other s ideas or work in their projects. Each participant will introduce their thread as part of the discussion and each participant will respond to two other classmate threads.. As a group compile a list of top ideas and rank them by importance in establishing a class anti-plagiarism policy. 3

SmartBoard Lessons Using the SmartBoard Template begin o SmartBoard Lesson Plan Template creating a Smartboard lesson o Embedding Flash Video o Embedding web links o Embedding attachments 2 eactivity: Use of Technology in Education NETS-A and NETS-T Standards Discussion Question Thoughts What resources do teachers need to successfully use technology in their classrooms How can technology be used besides typing papers or researching on the Internet How can technology be effectively integrated into the curriculum Educational Technology Review After viewing the NETS-A and NETS-T standards brainstorm and discuss how technology can be used in the current classroom if there were no restrictions on equipment and access. Each participant will introduce their thread as part of the discussion and each participant will respond to two other classmate threads. As a group compile a list of top ideas and rank them by instructional effectiveness. Given the current availability and access to technology list the ideas that could be accomplished now, those ideas that could be accomplished in one year and those ideas that could be accomplished within 3 years. Module Class Topics Practice Assignments 3 Effective Use of Technology What is a Web Quest Web Quest design o Web Quest in-class presentation Discuss what a Web Quest is and view the parts of a Web Quest Participate in a Web Quest Hands On Tutorial Divide the class into groups and create a web quest Class groups present their Web Quest 3 eactivity #1: Creating a Prezi (Web 2.0 Presentation Software) Web Quest Impression worksheet Create a Webliography Using Prezi the student will design a presentation on how to create a Web Quest. The presentation will include graphics and YouTube video links and will discuss the parts of a Web Quest. eactivity #2. Dropbox (Online Storage) Dropbox is free 2Gig online storage that can be accessed from any computer or Android and iphone/ipad hand-held device. Dropbox eliminates the need for thumb drives that can be lost, stolen or damaged. The participant will create a Dropbox account and follow the online tutorial. After completing the tutorial the participant will create a Word document and answer the following questions. What are the benefits of Online storage or storage in the cloud? What are three types of online storage, including Dropbox, and explain the different storage limitations and costs. What are the concerns of using Online storage as opposed to using a Thumb drive? The participant will create a shared folder on their Dropbox account, upload their complete Word document and share the document link with the instructor. 4

Attendance Policy: Attendance policy: Attendance is mandatory. If there is an emergency and you miss one (1) class, the instructor will provide a make-up assignment. (This option is not available for the first class.) If the make-up assignment is not completed by the last day of class, a grade of I will be entered for the course. Incompletion grade: You are required to attend all four classes and be on time. Unsatisfactory completion due to attendance will result in a grade of Incomplete I. NOTE: Please remember, that when a student receives an I in a course, HCC requires the student to submit a document explaining the emergency and a plan of action to satisfy the course requirements to the Dean. If you miss two (2) classes, you will need to retake the course. Class Session #1: Students that miss the first assigned face-to-face class will be withdrawn from the course. Class Participation: Students are expected to participate fully in class activities which include group projects, class discussions, individual and group presentations, readings, and reflective responses. 6
