2 SPECIAL TOPICS Accessibility Matters In an effort to create greater awareness of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Accessibility on campus, we offer this series of workshops that can be taken individually or as a series. CAAS Tech for Teachers Triton is committed to creating an accessible learning environment available for all students. The Center for Access and Accommodative Services (CAAS) provides hardware and software that makes course content accessible for students with disabilities. Join us at CAAS to see and try some of the devices that our students use to access course content and learn how you can encourage your students to get the most out of them. (90 minutes) Monday, Sept. 14, 1 2:30 p.m. (A-137) Creating an Accessible Word Document for Instruction Do you know if your Microsoft Word documents are accessible? Are you familiar with features that will make a Word document more accessible? During this session, we will review a few options in Word including headings, lists and images to promote greater accessibility. You will have an opportunity to practice these features during the session. (60 minutes) Tuesday, Oct. 20, BL: Universal Design and Accessibility Universal Design is a framework that guides the development of flexible learning environments to accommodate individual learning differences. We will explore what Universal Design entails, guidelines, and web sites that can assist you in developing content for all. (60 minutes) Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2 3 p.m. Grants 101 Sacella Smith, Executive Director, Grants Development This interactive workshop will provide information on the grants process at Triton College, how to find grants, and how to apply for grants. Participants will leave with different resources to help identify grants in their areas of interest and a scalable template to develop grant applications, regardless of project size or budget. (60 minutes) Friday, Oct. 9, a.m. (E-210E) Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1:30 2:30 p.m. (E-210E) Learning Redefined by Competencies Lore Carvajal, Chair, Behavioral Sciences Paul Jensen, Dean, Continuing Education Competency-based education (CBE) continues to gain popularity because of its ability to get students to degree completion faster, cheaper, and on a flexible learning schedule. However, CBE does not come without unique challenges. This workshop begins the conversation about CBE and how we start thinking differently about innovative ways to address the variety of student needs, now and in the future. (60 minutes) Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, BLACKBOARD LEARN WORKSHOPS In-person workshops take place in the Faculty/Staff Computer Lab (E-210W) unless otherwise indicated. For those who can t make it to campus for in-person Blackboard Learn (BL) workshops, online sessions are available. Online workshops are conducted entirely online in Blackboard Learn and are open for one week unless otherwise indicated. Specific log-in instructions will arrive by Triton College shortly before each workshop s start date. After the start time, participants can log into their chosen workshop from any computer. Faculty need not log in at the time the workshop opens. For new users of Blackboard and for those full- and part-time instructors looking to enhance a course or explore the Blackboard Learn environment. Topics include an introduction to Blackboard Learn, adding and organizing content, communication tools, uploading a complete syllabus, and the Grade Book. This session is required before one can request an enhanced course shell in Blackboard Learn, including adjunct faculty looking to fulfill their course shell requirements. Pre-registration is required. This workshop is a refresher on the various options available to you in the Grade Center. Be sure to come with your course shells and questions! Pre-registration is required. (60 minutes) Wednesday, Aug. 26, Wednesday, Aug. 26, 5 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, BLACKBOARD LEARN SEMINAR (BLS) Qualify to teach an online or hybrid course at Triton College by completing the Teaching Online Seminar and the following series of seven workshops designed to teach faculty how to use Blackboard create and teach online and hybrid courses. Sign up either for the entire seminar or select individual topics for professional development. Complete descriptions for each topic appear below. Specific log-in instructions will arrive by Triton College shortly before each workshop s start date. After the start date, participants can log into their chosen workshop from any computer. Pre-registration is required. BLS: Teaching Online Seminar (3 weeks) This seminar is conducted over a three-week period entirely online in Blackboard Learn. This online seminar is an overview of online learning and teaching. Through readings, discussions, and activities, the participants will learn about technology trends in education, characteristics of the successful online facilitator, best practices for the virtual classroom, characteristics of the successful online student, and their role in the virtual classroom. This seminar is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. Online: Saturday, Sept. 12 Sunday, Oct. 4 BLS Topic 1: Getting Started This session is an introduction to the Blackboard Learn environment. Topics include navigating in Blackboard Learn, adding and organizing content, communication tools, netiquette, and uploading a complete syllabus. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Friday, Oct. 2 Thursday, Oct. 8 BLS Topic 2: Presenting Content In this session, we will discuss key elements of good course design, planning the course, creating web-friendly content, building and using learning modules and folders, rubrics and using adaptive release. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Friday, Oct. 9 Sunday, Oct. 18 BLS Topic 3: Discussions, Blogs, Journals, and Wikis In this session, we will cover creating effective online discussions and the various tools Blackboard Learn offers to manage them. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Monday, Oct. 19 Sunday, Oct. 25

3 BLS Topic 4: Assessments In this session, we will cover the pedagogical and practical methods of designing assessments, as well as Blackboard Learn s tools to create, manage, and analyze assessments and internal surveys. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Monday, Oct. 26 Sunday, Nov. 1 BLS Topic 5: Assignments and Plagiarism In this session, we will cover Blackboard Learn s assignment tool and antiplagiarism software (Safe Assign), as well as low- and high-tech tools to recognize and document plagiarism. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Monday, Nov. 2 Sunday, Nov. 8 BLS Topic 6: Grading Center and Reports In this session, we will cover Blackboard Learn's internal Grade Center, working with grades, and how to apply effective rubrics that make grading faster, easier and more consistent. In addition, we will discuss how course reports, the early warning system, and the performance dashboard and the retention center can be used to monitor student progress. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Monday, Nov. 9 Sunday, Nov. 15 BLS Topic 7: Working with Groups While group work is never easy, it should not be avoided in the online environment. In this session, we will cover Blackboard Learn s group manager. Although this session is not required to qualify to teach online for the college, it is still recommended. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Monday, Nov. 16 Sunday Nov. 22 In order to teach online or hybrid courses for the college, faculty must complete both the Blackboard Learn Topic Seminar and the Teaching Online Seminar. Introduction to 3D Printing: Part 2 Now that your interest is piqued, come and get a closer look at the design tools and hardware for 3D printing. At the end of this workshop you will have a file that you can schedule to have printed in the CTE. Be sure to bring a flash drive! Prerequisite: Introduction to 3D Printing Part 1 or comparable experience. (120 minutes) Monday, Nov. 16, 1:30 3:30 p.m. Low Cost/No Cost Textbook Alternatives Sara Gallagher, Instructional Design Specialist Lauren Kosrow, Faculty, Library Looking for quality materials to enhance or replace costly textbooks? Worried about copyright laws? During this session, we will discuss library resources and open educational resources that are intended for you to use, modify or adapt. (60 minutes) Tuesday, Sept. 22, Thursday, Oct. 29, a.m. Prezi Jim Ellison, Adjunct Faculty, Psychology Prezi is web-based presentation software that operates on the premise that presentations should not be a slide show; but maps of interrelated ideas and concepts. We will be help you get set up in Prezi and create a simple presentation. Bring ideas and materials for a presentation that you would like to create. (90 minutes) Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2 3:30 p.m. Web 2.0: Choose Your Own Adventure Aloha! Come join us online in the digital breezes on 4 tropical islands to choose your own Web 2.0 Adventure. After a brief island-hopping excursion, choose two of the islands for a weeklong exploration. During the last week, you will share your adventures and accomplishments in an online discussion forum. (120 minutes) Online: Monday, Oct. 12 Nov. 8 INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND WEB 2.0 TOOLS In-person workshops take place in the Faculty/Staff Computer Lab (E-210W) unless otherwise indicated. BL: Blackboard Collaborate I and II Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing tool that can be used to enhance classroom instruction with live guest speakers, in online classes to hold a synchronous session with students, to conduct virtual meetings, to provide online student services and advising, etc. In Blackboard Collaborate I, you will learn how to request a Collaborate room, set up a conference, and share your computer's desktop with an audience. To facilitate hands-on activities, we will be "flipping" the workshop, so you will receive links to preparatory videos prior to the workshop via Triton . Then, in Collaborate II you will facilitate your own small Collaborate session with assistance. Collaborate II is offered by appointment only for those who have attended Collaborate I. Appointments must be scheduled via to cte@triton.edu. (60 minutes each) Monday, Aug. 31, Tuesday, Sept. 8, a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 11 a.m. Noon Thursday, Nov. 19, Introduction to 3D Printing: Part 1 3D printing is in forefront of recent news. This workshop provides an overview of the 3D printing process, and an introduction to the software and hardware required to create 3D objects for yourself and your students. (120 minutes) Monday, Nov. 9, 1:30 3:30 p.m. SMART BOARD TRAINING Smart Board workshops meet in E-210W unless otherwise indicated. Smart Board Overview Brief (1 hour) introduction to the Smart Board, in which simple functionality is covered. This workshop is pre-requisite to any other Smart Board workshop. (60 minutes) Tuesday, Aug. 25, Tuesday, Sept. 15, 5 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, Apple TV/Maestro on the Smart Board Learn how to stream content from your ipad, iphone, or ipod- Touch or to mirror your ipad or iphone to the Smart Board. In addition, learn how Smart s Maestro product provides seamless integration between a single ipad and Smart Notebook lessons from anywhere in the room. Note: you must bring your own Apple device to participate in this workshop. Prerequisite: Smart Board Overview. (60 minutes) TBA Smart Board - Creating Dynamic, Engaging Classroom Experiences Notebook 14/15 and Smart Response VE have tools to help create dynamic, engaging learning experiences for you and your students. Learn how to use XC (Extreme Collaboration), Student Response VE, and the Concept Mapping features, and then how to capture the experience by using the built-in recorders. Prerequisite: Smart Board Overview. (120 minutes) Monday, Oct. 19, 2 4 p.m.

4 Smart Board New Tools for GED/ESL Ready to expand upon your use of the Smart Board in the classroom? Smart Notebook 14 offers new tool options that can be used with GED and ESL students to create dynamic, interactive lessons, including Basic Math Tools, Smart Math Blocks, 3D Tools, the Gallery, and the Smart Exchange. Prerequisite: Smart Board Overview (90 minutes) Thursday, Sept. 24, 4:30 6 p.m. Smart Board Brightlink Interactive Projector and Smart KAPP This two-in-one workshop will focus on the new Smart Board equipment being installed in the H- building: the Brightlink Interactive Projector and Smart KAPP. The Brightlink Interactive Projector is a little different from the traditional Smart Boards already installed across the campus. In this workshop learn best practices to successfully use this new projector. Described as a digital flip chart to rescue brainstorms from the place they go to die, Smart KAPP digitally captures participants ideas and notes and disseminates them to concurrent live viewers in the same room or across the campus. Note: it is recommended that you bring a tablet, ipad, or android device to fully participate in the workshop. (90 minutes) Friday, Sept. 4, 9:30-11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 1 2:30 p.m. Smart Board - Math Features Smart Notebook 14/15 has improved math functionality through the new Smart Math Tools powered by Geogebra! Write equations, create interactive graphs, and use new Smart Notebook features that are available for all levels of math and math-related instruction. In addition, there will be an overview of the TI Simulator which has been installed on Smart Boards across the campus. Included in the 90-minute presentation is a 30-minute, hands-on, assisted lab. (90 minutes) Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2:30 4 p.m. TEACHING AND LEARNING WORKSHOPS All Teaching and Learning Workshops meet in E-210E unless otherwise indicated. Academic Assessment Committee Brown Bag Meet with Triton College's Academic Assessment Committee to discuss your goals for student learning assessment or for individual assistance with your Assessment Plans, Assessment Reports, Assessment Implementation Reports and/or General Education Outcomes Maps. Special topics are announced at Academic Senate. (60 minutes) Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2 3 p.m. Assessment Basics Assessment gauges how well we help students gain the skills and information necessary for them to succeed both in and beyond their classrooms and informs ways to improve our course content and teaching methods. In this teaching circle, we'll cover the forms and functions of assessment, and participants will leave with practical examples for immediate use in the classroom. (60 minutes) Wednesday, Sept. 9, 12:30 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, Noon 1 p.m. Creating Your Online Instructor Presence Creating instructor presence in an online course is an excellent opportunity to engage and motivate students. During this workshop, we will discuss best practices and strategies to creating your online instructor presence. (60 minutes) Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1:30 2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, Curriculum Boot Camp Ready to develop that dream course or revise your program curriculum? In this seminar, you'll learn the ins and outs of preparing course outlines and curriculum proposals for submission to the College Curriculum Committee. The interrelated processes of curriculum and assessment will also be explored. (150 minutes) Friday, Sept. 25, 9 a.m. Noon Monday, Oct. 5, 12:30 3:30 p.m. Curriculum Processes A brief introduction to the college s internal and external curriculum approval processes for new and/or revised credit courses and programs, including those of the College Curriculum Committee, Illinois Community College Board, Illinois Articulation Initiative and Higher Learning Commission. (30 minutes) Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 12:30 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, Noon 12:30 p.m. Successful Student Engagement Techniques (SETs) Discover proven Student Engagement Techniques (SETs) grounded in active and collaborative learning techniques that address multiple learning styles. Participants will leave this workshop with ready-to-use classroom activities and assignments for immediate or future use in their classrooms. (120 minutes) Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1 3 p.m. Tips for Effective Rubrics Rubrics improve students ability to master course content in a logical, consistent manner and improve the speed and efficiency of grading. In this teaching circle, participants will learn and share ways to develop effective rubrics for use both in and out of the classroom. (60 minutes) Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1:30 2:30 p.m. Tips for New or Returning Instructors For those who are teaching for the first time or those returning to the classroom who want to be as comfortable with their teaching skills as they are with their course content. Topics include establishing and maintaining an interactive learning environment, teaching tips and student engagement strategies. (120 minutes) Friday, Oct. 2, 10 a.m. Noon Tips for Effective Syllabi Successful courses depend upon clearly communicated expectations for both students and instructors. In this teaching circle, participants will learn about required and recommended syllabus content that provides a framework for a productive and respectful course environment.
