6 Seismic Performance Testing Natural disasters happen, but when there is no time for downtime, planning ahead can make a world of difference. Piping systems located in earthquake prone areas are likely to be exposed to forces and deflections beyond normal static conditions and the results can be catastrophic. Victaulic components can accommodate seismic forces in the following piping system conditions. 7 Testing performed at the Real-Time Multi-directional Experimental Laboratory at the Center for Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, USA proved the suitability of Victaulic grooved mechanical couplings to maintain operational integrity of piping systems during seismic events. Victaulic couplings ranging in size from 4-16 / mm were exposed to accelerations up to 50% greater than the Northridge, California earthquake. The water-filled assemblies were pressurized to 200psi/1375 kpa for the duration of all tests and no pressure loss or leakage was noted during any of the tests. Data Centers 7

15 VictaulicVortex in a Data Center The system fully extinguishes fires in enclosed cabinets and isolated equipment within protected spaces. Zones can be centrally controlled yet independently activated for fire suppression only where required. The system delivers as little as one gallon of water per emitter per minute: each emitter can protect up to 2,500 cubic ft. The system is compatible with facility fire protection systems providing greater design flexibility.
