1 Introduction to Psychology Fall 2009: Block 6 Course Syllabus Teacher: Mr. Tim Sartori Credit Hours: ½ credit Chaminade and 3.0 dual credit hours UMSL Classroom: 205 Office: Frische tsartori@chaminade-stl.com Phone: (314) ext 120 Course Description: Psychology offers the student an opportunity to understand the basic methods, concepts, and principles in the field of psychology and their relevance to his world and school culture. The student aided by the possibility to think critically, experiences psychology and practices psychology as an advanced learning experience. Using many methods, the student is given a rare exposure to the richness of the field of psychology. Cultural diversity and gender issues are a constant part of the course as well as research, writing, and public speaking. Required Text: Morris, Charles G. & Maisto, Albert A. Psychology an Introduction, Prentice Hall, New Jersey. 11 th edition Assessment Methods: 1. Quizzes- Each period out of 10 points. At the end of the semester you will be able to drop your two lowest quizzes 2. Tests- Will be administered and cover material read, notes, quizzes, and lectures from class. 3. Research Paper- You will prepare a 3-5 page paper on a famous psychologist. More information will be given in a handout. 4. Homework- Not only are you expected to maintain with the readings for the course, but you will occasionally have written homework as well. Homework needs to be printed out and submitted at the beginning of the period. NO LATEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. Each and every reading you will have the option of outlining the section that you read. If you choose to outline that section you will receive a (minimum) 7/10 for the quiz that day. 5. In class participation- You are expected to be able to answer questions from the previous reading(s). Proper classroom conduct is expected at all times. General Class Information/Expectation: Expect between pages of reading as preparation for each class.

2 You will come to class with a fully charged laptop, especially on test dates as the tests typically are administered on exam view. Loss of work and failure to submit work due to laptop issues, typically, are not valid excuses. Absences: The student handbook pg 17 states, a student will receive two days of make-up time for any daily work missed. Major, previously assigned work must be made-up and/or turned in the day the student returns to that class. It is the responsibility of the student to request and complete make-up work from his teachers. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in loss of credit. You are expected to keep up with the readings whether you are in school or not. If you are absent the day of class, stop by and see me to get any missing information, handouts, materials. You should expect somewhere between 25 quizzes and 6-7 tests throughout the semester constituting somewhere around 2000 possible points. Psychology is considered an elective in the history department, meaning, you elected to take this course. Therefore, my expectation is that you will push yourself in order to become successful. You determine what success is not me! My grading system is designed for students who constantly work throughout the semester. I have never failed a student because he wasn t smart enough, rather he chose not to work in and out of the classroom. Student Evaluation/Grading: Methods of evaluation are determined from the above list. No grades will be weighted or curved. You can determine your grade at anytime by the points earned in the class divided by the points possible. Cheating/Plagiarism: Cheating, in any form, will not be tolerated. Student caught cheating will receive no credit for that assignment, quiz, paper, or test.

Women of Psychology Gender/Gender Roles/ Gender Stereotypes Race/Culture Homework pgs page paper on Nature vs. Nurture experiment. Print off and make sure it is ready to submit at beginning of class Thursday August 28 th : Quiz on pgs Discuss Research Method in Psychology, IV/DV Ethics and Research. Stanley Milgram s Obedience Experiment. Homework: Nature Vs. Nurture Assignment and Read pgs Tuesday September 2 nd : Quiz on pgs Turn in Nature Vs. Nurture Assignment. Discuss Conscious Experience, William James, Streams of Consciousness, Daydreams/Fantasies. Sleep, Melatonin, Stages of Sleep, Sleep Disorders, Dreams. Homework read pgs Thursday September 4 th : Quiz on pgs Meditation Exercise Discuss: Drug Altered Consciousness, Differences between Substance Abuse/dependence/tolerance/ withdrawal. Depressants/Stimulants/Hallucinogens. Meditation and Hypnosis. Study for Test on Chapters 1 and 4 Monday September 8th: Review Chapters 1 and 4 (SUBJECT TO CHANGE!!) Wednesday September 10th: TEST ON CHAPTER 1 AND MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS AND 3 ESSAYS. Homework read pgs Monday September 22nd: Quiz on pages Discuss pages 75-91: PNS, Endocrine System, Genes, Evolution, Behavior. Finish working on Chapter 2 terms and amniocentesis reflection. Reflection is due on Wednesday September 24th. Wednesday September 24th: REVIEW CHAPTER 2 TEST Friday September 26th: TEST ON CHAPTER 2 50 Multiple Choice 2 ESSAYS. Chapter 2 terms due today. Homework read pgs and prepare for Quiz on Tuesday September 30th on pgs Tuesday September 30th: Quiz on pgs Discussed absolute and just noticeable difference threshold, discussed the parts of the eye and functions, aspects of color. Friday October 17th: TEST FOR CHAPTER 3 Homework read pgs Chapter 5 pgs Wednesday October 22nd: Took quiz over pgs Discussed Classical Conditioning and characteristics of each US, CS, UR, CR. Discussed Desensitation Therapy, Watched video on Pavlov's experiment. Homework re-read section (pgs ) because we will discuss Operant Conditioning on Friday along with taking another quiz. Friday October 24th: Overviewed classical conditioning and the US, UR, CS, CR, Completed 5 exercises on Classical Conditioning, Took quiz on classical conditioning. Briefly discussed operant conditioning. Homework read pgs Quiz on Tuesday! Have a good weekend Tuesday October 28th: Took Quiz over pgs Discussed Positive Reinforcement, Negative Reinforcement and Punishment, Extinction. Homework Finish reading chapter 5. Quiz on Thursday October 30th. TEST ON CHAPTER 5 PROBABLY MONDAY NOVEMBER 3RD. Thursday October 30th: took Quiz over Discussed insight, schedules of reinforcement, Kohler's experiment. NO TEST MONDAY. TEST WILL BE WEDNESDAY November 5th. Monday November 3rd: Reviewed Schedules of reinforcement, Classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Test is Wednesday November 5th. Wednesday November 5th: TEST OVER CHAPTER 5. Homework do a 1/2 page to 1 page assignment of intelligence. Define what YOU think intelligence is, you can give characterstics and examples to justify your definition. You might also want to list components and explain why you think the components are justified. Print off and bring to class on Friday, DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME! Homework read pgs Tuesday November 25th: Took quiz on pgs Discussed Decay Theory, Retroactive vs. ProActive Interferrence, state-dependent memory. NO HOMEWORK!!! Tuesday December 2nd: Review pgs Tuesday December 9th: Chapter 6 test. If you handwrite your terms and submit them on Monday (the day of the exam) you will receive 10 bonus points! Thursday December 11th: Review For Final Exam Monday December 15th: FINAL EXAM

7 PSYCHOLOGIST RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT Directions: Each student will be assigned a major psychologist to research. You will need to include a bibliography with proper citations of your sources. YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE NON-ELECTRONIC SOURCE (BOOK OR JOURNAL ARTICLE). RESEARCH PAPER IS DUE TUESDAY NOVEMBER 25TH. Each student will prepare a 3-5 page paper addressing the following: 1. Major publications 2. School of Pyschology to which he/she belongs? 3. Major impact of his/her work in the field 4. Types of research methods utilized in his/her experiments 5.
