1 PSYC 3458: Biological Psychology Syllabus Fall 2015 Lecture Time: T, F 1:35-3:15 Lecture Location: 200 Richards Hall Instructor Information: Dr. Jennifer Pirri [email protected] Office Location: 380 Nightingale Hall, ext Office Hours: M, Th 2-4 PM or by appointment Course Description: Welcome to Biological Psychology. The main goal of this course is for you to gain a strong foundation in the structures and functions of the nervous system while exploring the methods and theories that allow us to understand normal and abnormal human behavior. Throughout this course we will explore a range of topics. You will learn the essentials of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology including a basic introduction to neurons, brain organization and functional specialization of brain structure related to language, learning, memory, reward and sensory/motor systems. We will also investigate how the nervous system is influenced by bioactive substances, and examine neurological disorders and some of their treatments. Prerequisites: PSYC 1101 Course Objectives: 1. Strengthen your knowledge of the biological principals governing the nervous system. 2. Gain an appreciation for the complex interactions between the brain and behavior 3. To refine your ability to think critically and use this knowledge to evaluate neurosciencerelated topics and issues. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course students will be able to: 1. Identify basic brain structures and functional neural systems. 2. Describe the process of signaling between nerve cells and the impact on behavior. 3. Recognize and describe brain structures and functional organization relating to language, learning, memory, reward and sensory/motor systems 4. Compare and contrast the role for neurotransmitters in the etiology and treatment of various psychopathologies such as, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

Describe the functional neurological changes that occur in major neurological diseases and disorders such as Alzheimer s disease, Parkinson s disease, Huntington s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, neuropathy, and migraine. Course Materials: Exams will be based on material presented in lecture and put into practice in homework assignments, and in-class questions. If you would like a traditional textbook reference to reinforce concepts discussed in class I suggest the following textbook: Text (Optional): Breedlove and Watson (2013). Biological Psychology (7th ed). Sunderland, MA: Sinauer Associates, Inc. ISBN-13: Additional readings, as well as supplemental handouts, videos, lecture slides and detailed assignment information can be found on the Blackboard site associated with this course. It will be your responsibility to check Blackboard often. Top Hat Subscription (Required): A subscription to Top Hat will be required. Please visit to signup; subscriptions are $24/semester or $36 per year. You will receive an invitation with a 6-digit join code that you must enter to gain access to the course. Course Format: This course will consist primarily of in-class lectures. To make lectures more engaging and to encourage student participation and attendance, interactive Top Hat questions will be answered on your smart phone, laptop or tablet during each class (see Course Materials above for registration information). Lecture slides and corresponding textbook page references will be posted on Blackboard by 9 AM before class to help you with note taking. I will record my lectures via Tegrity (see Tegrity Classes on Blackboard) and make them available to you for your reference when studying or in the case that you miss class. This is NOT and online course, so watching recorded lectures in lieu of attending class on a regular basis is not advised. Unexpected computer issues might arise, and I cannot guarantee that each lecture will be recorded. If you miss class, Blackboard is your greatest resource to finding out what you missed and how you should prepare for the next class. Assistance and Peer Tutoring: Students who need additional help with the course should see the instructor as soon as possible. I am available during office hours or by appointment to answer questions or provide extra help in person. I am also happy to answer questions via and will respond within 24

5 Exams: Throughout the semester there will be three, closed-book, closed note, unit exams (this includes your final exam). Each exam will cover primarily the material that is covered in that unit. However, knowledge of fundamental concepts covered earlier in the semester will be assumed as we progress. A study guide outlining concepts on each exam will be given to students prior to each exam. Make up exams can be scheduled should you have an unavoidable health or personal emergency. ONE make up exam will be allowed per student for the semester. Please contact me as soon as possible if you have a conflict with an exam so we can make the appropriate considerations. Exams will consist of: o Multiple choice o Fill in the blank o Matching o Problem solving Final Examination: Exam III will take place during finals week. The final exam schedule is announced by the University well in advance of finals. Do not make travel plans, purchase airplane tickets, etc. until you know the date of your final exams including this course. If you find that you have a scheduling conflict between the final for this course and another course, it is your responsibility to complete and submit the final exam conflict form available through the Registrar s Office online at URL: Top Hat Questions: On average, 3 Top Hat questions will be asked each class period. Each question will be weighted 50% for accuracy and 50% for participation. Classroom questions can only be completed during lecture and there are no make-ups for missed classes. Grades: Grades will be on the ABCDF scale with +/- grades. It is anticipated that letter grades for this course will be assigned according to the following scale: A s: % B s: % C s: % D s: % F: below 60%
6 I reserve the right to lower these grade cutoffs, but they will not be raised. If the final, overall class average (not the average for one exam or assignment) should fall below 75%, the instructor reserves the right to scale the final grades to bring the class average up to 75%. NO negative scaling will be done if the class average is above 75%.
