1 500 College Hill Liberty, Missouri (816) Fax (816) Office of International Studies, ext Computers while Overseas Most programs, especially the ones in which students participate with an educational institution (like a university or an IES center), provide computer labs in which students can do research and compose/print essays. In some programs (such as OOSC), access to computers is limited. There are some walk-in computer centers in some cities allowing you to use computers on a timed-fee basis, but they can be expensive. For all programs, if you own a laptop or notebook computer (which has a built-in converter for the electric current in your country), you may wish to bring it. You might have difficulty finding a printer to which to connect it, but in up-to-date computer labs you should not have much difficulty (and if you are unable to connect your computer to a printer, you can save your information a floppy disk or CD and print from a lab computer). If you have any questions about the availability of computers for your program, contact the Office of International Studies. Getting your over the Internet 1. Below is the relevant information from the WJC Network HOWTO offered on the WJC Intranet. It gives instructions about how to access WJC from different Web browsers and clients. 2. Note: in order to send , users have to provide their username and password (by default a program may try to send s without first authenticating). 3. If you have difficulties, send your questions to the Office of International Studies. Additional computer/ information for OOSC students The Warners provide OOSC students with access to . A computer for that purpose is located in their library and may be used during the hours when Mrs. Warner has her daily surgery to consult with students. is not available at other times, unless students locate an Oxford library that permits access or choose to utilize a walk-in computer center in Oxford. Students may maintain their William Jewell accounts and have access to them via the Internet, or they may use the Warners address (the latter option provides less privacy). The Warners computer will not be available for doing research or typing/printing essays; computers at libraries or walk-in centers, or personal computers, are required. Page 1 of 6 jlj 05/17/05

2 WJC Network HOWTO Spam (a.k.a. Unsolicited Commercial (UCE)) All s received from non-jewell addresses are being processed by a spam filter. The spam filter rates each message based on the probability that the individual words and phrases are found in a legitimate (Bayesian filtering). In addition, the filter utilizes black lists of wellknown spammers and viruses. Based on the score of each , the filter decides what to do with it. The current scoring limits are setup in the following way. Messages with scores below 3, are immediately passed to the server. Messages with scores between 3 and 6 are tagged (the subject is preceded by "[BULK]"). Messages with scores above 7 are blocked. Here is how to see the score of an you have received from a non-jewell address. You will have to look at some of the non-standard headers of the message ("X-Barracuda-Spam- Score"; the "X-Barracuda-Spam-Status" field shows the current spam score limits). Open an message. In Microsoft Outlook, go to View -> Options -> Internet headers. In Mozilla Thunderbird, go to View -> Headers -> All. In Mail.app, go to View -> Message -> Long Headers. Users of Microsoft Outlook are encouraged to install and use an Outlook plugin. The plugin will help the filter to learn which messages should be treated as "spam" and which ones as "not spam" for a particular account. Outlook needs to be restarted after the installation of the plugin. You should notice two additional icons on the Outlook standard toolbar. The icons resemble envelopes in green and red. Click on the red envelope to submit a message as "spam" (after highlighting it). Click on the green envelope to submit a message as "not spam" (a.k.a ham). You can submit several messages at the same time (just highlight them first). Note that in order for the filter to work effectively, you will have to "process" at least 100 messages from each category (200 recommended). Users of other clients, can setup custom rules on their client to redirect s to particular folders based on the [BULK] tag and/or the spam score (the "X-Barracuda-Spam- Score" header). The filter keeps a message log of all the s that have been evaluated and have a score greater than or equal to 0 (including blocked s). 3 5.2 Outlook Web Access (OWA) Open the web browser of your choice and go to: Note 1: There are a few faculty/staff mailboxes which are still located on Note 2: The OWA on cardinal.jewell.edu can be used only with the https protocol (and not with http). In the "Log On" box type your username (unless there is an exception, it should be lastnamefirstinitial) and press enter. It needs to be a backslash. - with three fields: username: username password: domain: wjc_ops Make sure that you log off when you are done using your Microsoft Outlook Microsoft Outlook can be setup for use with multiple profiles for different accounts. If you have setup Outlook for use with another account, add a new profile for your Jewell account by going to Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel -> Mail -> Show Profiles, and clicking on the Add button. Note: If at any point during the configuration you think that you have misconfigured something and want to start all over again, delete the profile which you created for your Jewell account and create a new one Page 3 of 6 jlj 05/17/05

4 Depending on the edition of Outlook you have, an Services screen might appear. If it does, choose the "Corporate or Workgroup" option and click Next. Note: If you have chosen the "Internet Only" option before and/or if you don't see an option for specifying an Exchange server close the configuration wizard and do the following: Open Outlook. Go to Tools -> Options -> Mail Services -> Reconfigure Mail Support. Change the " Services Options" to "Corporate or Workgroup." end of Note Check the "Microsoft Exchange Server" box and click Next. Enter cardinal.jewell.edu in the "Microsoft Exchange server" field. Enter your username in the Mailbox field and click Next. Accept the default "No" answer to the travel question. Troubleshooting Outlook Right-click on the Microsoft Outlook icon and select Properties. 1. If you don't see "Microsoft Exchange Server" listed in Services: Click Add. Type cardinal.jewell.edu in the "Microsoft Exchange server" field. Type your username in the Mailbox field. Go to the Delivery tab and make sure that the "Deliver new mail..." section shows: "Mailbox - Lastname, Firstname". Press OK. 2. If you do see "Microsoft Exchange Server" listed in Services: Click Properties. Make sure that the "Microsoft Exchange server" field shows CARDINAL (or cardinal.jewell.edu, or cardinal.wjclan.jewell.edu) Page 14 of 76 jlj 05/17/05

5 5.3.2 XP and 2003 Go to Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel -> Mail -> (Show Profiles) Add a new profile if there are non available or if there Click on " Accounts..." and "View or change existing account." Click on "Add...," select "Microsoft Exchange Server." Type cardinal.jewell.edu in the "Microsoft Exchange Server" field and your username in the User Name" field. Make sure that the "Deliver new ..." box shows "Mailbox - Lastname, Firstname," rather than Personal Folders. 5.4 Mozilla Thunderbird Note: Mozilla Thunderbird is a great client which is superior to Microsoft Outlook Express. Thunderbird works on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux/UNIX. Open Thunderbird. If you have never used Thunderbird before, you will be presented with a configuration wizard screen. Choose "Don't import anything" and click Next. If you have used Thunderbird before, go to Tools -> Account Settings -> Add Account. Accept the default " account" and click Next. Enter your full name and address in the respective fields. Select IMAP. Enter cardinal.jewell.edu in both the "Incoming Server" and "Outgoing Server" fields. Accept the default "Incoming User Name" and click Next. Accept the default "Account Name" and click Next. Click Finish. Enter your password. Page 5 of 6 jlj 05/17/05

6 In the sending messages section, change from "'Sent' Folder on" to Other; select the account name you just created (by default it is your address) -> Sent Items. In the drafts section, change from "'Drafts' Folder on" to Other; select the account name you just created -> Drafts. On the left side, under the "Offline and Disk Space" category, in the Offline category, check the "Make the messages in my Inbox available when I am working offline" and the "When I create new folders, select them for offline use" boxes. Click on the "Select folders for offline use..." box. Check the folders you want to be able to view offline (e.g. Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, etc.). When you send s, you will be prompted for your password. You may select to save the password both for receiving and sending s. 5.5 Mail.app (Mac OS X) Open Mail.app. Go to Mail -> Preferences. Click the "+" sign to add a new/additional account. Enter/set the fields listed below in the Accounts screen. Field Value Account Type IMAP Address username@william.jewell.edu Full Name Your Name Incoming Mail Server cardinal.jewell.edu User Name username Make sure that the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" field is set to "cardinal.jewell.edu:username".
