4 50 years William L. Britton, QC Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Mr. Britton is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario where he earned his Bachelor of Honours in Business Administration. He then went on to the University of British Columbia where he attained his Bachelor of Laws in He articled under Robert G. Black and was called to the Bar in Calgary before the Honourable Mr. Justice M.E. Manning on July 5, His roll number is Mr. Britton has spent his entire legal career with Bennett Jones where he has serves as Counsel. Before becoming a lawyer, he played for the BC Lions and the Calgary Stampeders as a Linebacker. He was also the President of the Stampeders from 1983 to 1984 and sat on the Board of Directors for the NFL s Denver Broncos. Mr. Britton received his Queen s Counsel designation in Leslie R. Duncan, QC Originally from Bissett, Manitoba, Mr. Duncan received his Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in 1959 and continued on to the University of Toronto where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws in He completed his articles under W.A. McGillivray, QC before being called to the Alberta Bar on July 17, 1963 before the Honourable Mr. Justice Riley in Calgary. The Law Society gave him roll number He began his legal career with the firm of Fenerty, Robertson, Fraser & Hatch where he would spend 22 years. After his departure, he established his own law practice focusing on arbitration and litigation. In 1989, his practice of Duncan Collins merged with Blake, Cassels & Gradon LLP. Today, Mr. Duncan is back to concentrating on civil litigation at his own firm. He received his Queen s Counsel designation in 1989.
5 The Honourable W. Vaughan Hembroff, QC The Honourable Mr. Hembroff was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and travelled to British Columbia for his university education. He obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration and his Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia in He completed his articles under Frederick J. Morgan and on June 3, 1963, was called to the Alberta Bar before the Honourable Chief Justice C.C. McLaurin in Lethbridge. His roll number is Mr. Hembroff began with the firm of Virtue & Company where he remained for nearly 30 years before being appointed to the Court of Queen s Bench. He served as a Justice until his retirement in Drawing on his years of experience as a lawyer and Justice, he is now provides pro bono legal services at Lethbridge Legal Guidance. The Honourable Mr. Hembroff was appointed Queen s Counsel in The Honourable Terrence F. McMahon, QC A native of Calgary, Honourable Mr. McMahon completed his Bachelor of Commerce (1959) and Bachelor of Laws (1962) from the University of Alberta. He completed his articles under Hugh John MacDonald. On July 3, 1963, he was called to the Alberta Bar by the Honourable Mr. Justice J.V.H. Milvain in Calgary. His roll number is Mr. McMahon spent a large part of his career at Atkinson McMahon, a firm which he began. He remained there for nearly 30 years. During those years he served as a Bencher with the Law Society from 1984 to 1990, then President in Mr. McMahon was sworn in as a Justice of the Court of Queen s Bench in After presiding for 20 years, he retired last year and returned to active practice with Field Law, where he remains today. The Honourable Mr. McMahon was appointed Queen s Counsel in 1978.
6 50 years Douglas H. Mitchell, QC Mr. Mitchell was born and raised in Calgary. He earned his Bachelor in Business Administration from Colorado College in 1959 and his Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia in Mr. Mitchell articled with Harvey A. Ghitter and William A. Howard. On June 24, 1963, he was sworn in by the Honourable Mr. Justice H.W. Riley. His roll number is Mr. Mitchell began his legal career with Howard Mackie, now Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, specializing in corporate and commercial law. He is well known for his significant contributions to his community and to Canadian sports, serving as the Commissioner of the CFL, co-owner of the Calgary Stampeders, and as the founder of the BLG Awards. In 2004, Mr. Mitchell received a Distinguished Service Award for Service to the Community and was designated Queen s Counsel in The Honourable Mr. Justice Clifton D. O Brien Honourable Mr. Justice O Brien was born in Oak Lake, Manitoba and was educated at the University of Alberta where he attained his Bachelor of Arts in 1961 and graduated with his Bachelor of Laws in Upon graduation, Mr. Justice O Brien articled with John James Saucer, QC. On June 5, 1963 he was called to the Alberta Bar before the Honourable Mr. Justice J.M. Cairns. His roll number is Mr. Justice O Brien began his legal career with Bennett Jones and practised there for more than 40 years before being appointed to the Court of Queen s Bench in 2005, where he presides today. During his time at Bennett Jones, Mr. Justice O Brien served as a Law Society of Alberta Bencher from 1982 to 1986 and was appointed Queen s Counsel in 1981.
7 60 years The Honourable W. Kenneth Moore, QC The Honourable Mr. Kenneth Moore was called to the Bar on June 10, 1953 before the Honourable Mr. Justice W.G. Egbert in Calgary. Mr. Moore obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1949 and later his Bachelor of Laws in 1952 from the University of Alberta. Following graduation, he articled under J.V.H. Milvain, QC and was given roll number 1576 upon entry into the Law Society of Alberta. At the beginning of his career, Mr. Moore practised with Moore, Lougheed, Atkinson, McMahon and Tingle for 20 years until his appointment to the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Alberta in January He went on to become Associate Chief Justice in 1981 and was appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Queen s Bench in Our former Chief Justice received many accolades throughout his career, including a near sweep of the 2000 Distinguished Service Awards where he was honoured for Service to the Legal Profession, Service to the Community and Distinguished Service in Legal Scholarship. The Honourable Mr. Moore now practices law at Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP focusing on mediation and arbitration.
