Justice John Mwera, 66, holds a Law Degree from the University of Dar-es-Salaam and certificate from the Kenya School of Law. He attended Malava and Ingotse schools before joining Kenyatta College for his Cambridge A level certificate. He worked as professional class district magistrate from 1974, rising to the position of Registrar of the High Court, in which he served for 14 years. He was appointed Judge of the High Court in He is currently the resident Judge at the Mombasa High Court. 2. Justice Festus Azangalala, 65, holds a law the University of Nairobi and was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in He worked as Registrar of Titles at the Ministry of Lands and Settlement in 1977 before going in private legal practice between 1977 and He was appointed Judge of the High Court in 2003, where he served for four years the Commercial Division, three years at Mombasa High Court and most recently as Resident Judge at the Eldoret High Court. 3. Justice Asike Makhandia, 54, attended Bungoma High and Kabianga High School before joining the University of Nairobi for his law degree and the Kenya School of Law for his diploma in legal practice. He has practised as an advocate for 19 years, starting out at A.H. Malik and Company Advocates before moving on to Makhandia & Makhandia Advocates as Managing Partner between 1989 and He was appointed Judge of the High Court in 2003 and served in Kisii and Machakos. Justice Makhandia is married. 4. Justice William Ouko, 50, studied in Usenge, Mombasa and Nyeri before joining the University of Nairobi for his law degree. He started his career as a district magistrate in Nairobi in 1987 before joining the administrative ranks of the Judiciary as deputy registrar in 1989, where he rose to Chief Court Administrator and later Registrar of the High Court. He was appointed High Court judge in 2004 and has served in Malindi, Meru and Nakuru. He served as joint secretary of the committee on the Terms Page 1 of 5

2 and Conditions of Service of The Judiciary (The Kotut Committee), the committee on the Administration of Justice (the Kwach Committee), and the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into The Goldenberg Affair (The Goldenberg Commission). He chaired the Task Force on The Judiciary Reforms in Justice Ouko holds a diploma in legal practice from the Kenya School of Law, and is reading for a master s degree. 5. Lady Justice Philomena Mbete Mwilu, 54, graduated from the University of Nairobi and was admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya in She has practised law in the firms of Muthoga Gaturu & Company and later Mutunga & Company Advocates. She has worked as company secretary headed a state corporation before being appointed as Judge of the High Court in She has served in the Commercial Division in Nairobi, the Eldoret High Court and the Civil Appeals subdivision of the High Court, the murder section of the Criminal Division and most recently headed the Environment and Land Division of the High Court. 6. Justice Daniel Musinga, 49, headed the Commercial Division of the High Court until his appointment to the Court of Appeal. He had served at the Constitutional and Judicial Review Division since He was appointed as a member of the tribunal to investigate the conduct of suspended high court judges in 2003 and in October of the same year, he appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Kenya. He has served in Nakuru and sat on the bench there until December He later sat on the bench at the High Court in Kisii between 2008 and He is a distinguished jurist and was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in Justice Mohamed Warsame, 46, has served as High Court Judge in Embu, Kisumu, and Milimani in Nairobi since Until his appointment to the Court of Appeal, Justice Warsame was the head of Criminal Division in the High Court at Milimani. He holds a law degree from the University of Nairobi as well as diploma from the Kenya School of Law. He has worked as an advocate in various law firms. 8. Justice Sankale ole Kantai, 51, served as Judge of the Interim Independent Constitutional Dispute Resolution Court in He has served as chairman of the Value Added Tax Appeals Tribunal (Nairobi) for three consecutive terms. He attended Oloolaiser and Chesamisi High School before joining the University of Nairobi for his law degree, and the Kenya School of Law for his diploma in legal practice. He has worked as a magistrate and practised law for 24 years and was until his appointment the Principal Partner of Kantai & Company Advocates. He is married to Rosemary, with whom he has two daughters. 9. Justice Steven Gatembu Kairu, 52 has practised law in Kenya since he was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1985 and was, Page 2 of 5

3 until April 2009, a partner in Kairu & McCourt Advocates. He retired from the firm to go into full time arbitration and mediation work under the firm name of Arbitration & Mediation Chambers. He is a trainer of trainers in Alternative Dispute Resolution and has facilitated workshops in Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Seychelles. He has also taught at the School of Law, University of Nairobi, since He holds law degree from the University of Nairobi and a master s degree in law from Boston University. 10. Lady Justice Fatuma Sichale, 54, holds a law degree from the University of Nairobi. She was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in 1983 and subsequently worked as a magistrate until 1987 when she went into private practice in Kitale and Nairobi. In 2004, she was appointed an Assistant Director in the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC), rising to deputy director in July She resigned from KACC in October She has served as a council member of the Law Society of Kenya, as well as on the council of FIDA (K). She was one of the seven board members of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority (KACA). 11. Justice Kathurima M Inoti, 51, is the immediate former Chairman of the Kenya Law Reform Commission. He holds a Bachelor s and Master s degrees in law from the University of Nairobi. He has practised law in Nairobi for 13 years, specialising in constitutional litigation. He is a former lecturer in the Department of Public Law at the University of Nairobi. Justice M Inoti is a Commissioner of the International Commission of Jurists, Geneva Switzerland. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Association of Law Reform Agencies and a former President of the Association of Law Reform Agencies of Eastern and Southern Africa. He has served in international missions as a trial observer, election observer and human rights status evaluator for the International Commission of Jurists and Amnesty International. He has been awarded the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) and the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) for his contribution to law reform in Kenya. 12. Lady Justice Jamila Mohammed, 49, served as a Judge of the Interim Independent Constitutional Dispute Resolution Court. She has practised law for over 20 years, specializing in Human Rights, Constitutional, Commercial, Environmental and Property Law. She is an Arbitrator and Mediator. She holds a master s degree in Environmental Planning and Management from the University of Nairobi, and has completed course work for a second master s degree in Armed Conflict and Peace Studies. 4 the Vice Chairperson of FIDA (K) and the Vice-Chairperson of the National Committee on the Prevention of Genocide, War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity and all forms of Discrimination, established under the framework of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. 13. Justice Prof. Otieno-Odek, 49, is the outgoing Dean of the School of Law, of the University of Nairobi, and the immediate former Managing Director of the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI). He has served as the Chairman of the Paris Union of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva and was the Chairman of Madrid Union of WIPO and Chair of the Berne Executive Committee of WIPO. He Prof. Otieno-Odek is an accomplished academician who has published several articles in internationally renowned and refereed journals. He has undergone training on good governance and respect for rule of law. He has written numerous monographs and publications. He lectured several national, regional and international conferences on legal aspects of trade and intellectual property. Prof. Otieno-Odek holds a law degree (First Class Honours) from the University of Nairobi, a master s degree in law from Yale Law School, USA, and a doctoral degree in Juridical Science (SJD) from the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Prof. Otieno-Odek was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in He is married to Ms Anne Achieng Oluoch, with whom he has two sons. 14. Lady Justice Agnes Murgor, 49, is an accomplished corporate and commercial lawyer with 25 years experience. She holds a law degree from the University of Buckingham, and a master s degree in International Business Law from the University of London. She has worked with Hamilton Harrison & Mathews Advocates and as State Counsel in the Attorney General s Chambers in the Treaties and Agreements Department. In 1992, she founded the firm of Murgor & Murgor Advocates. Between 2007 and 2011, she served as Group Legal Counsel and Company Secretary for East African Breweries Limited. In 2011, she returned to private practice as Senior Partner in the firm of Murgor & Murgor Advocates, heading the commercial section, and at the same time continued to serve as EABL Group Company Secretary. 15. Justice Patrick O. Kiage, 43, attended Alliance High School before joining the University of Nairobi for his law degree and the Kenya School of Law for a diploma in legal practice. He was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in 1993, and has since handled a number of high profile criminal cases. He also served on the National Council of the Law Society of Kenya. In 2007, he was appointed as a Special Prosecuting Counsel in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Until his appointment, he was a Page 4 of 5

5 Deputy Director Public Prosecution in charge of County Affairs and Regulatory Prosecutions. He holds a master s degree in Public Service Law from New York University where he majored in Human Rights and Criminal Justice. He has taught Criminal Procedure and Practice as well as Family Law at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, and Trial Advocacy at the Kenya School of Law. He has written many academic papers and is the author of a textbook, The Essentials of Criminal Procedure in Kenya. 16. Justice GBM Kariuki, 65, holds a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of London, United Kingdom, and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Kenya School of Law. Prior to his appointment to the Bench, he served as Senior Counsel, having been admitted as an Advocate of the High Court and engaged in legal practice with the law firm of GBM Kariuki and Company Advocates for 30 years. Justice Kariuki has served as chairman of the Law Society of Kenya from 1985 to He was a member of the Council for Legal Education and a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Law Society of Kenya. He was founder and Chairman of the Law Society of Kenya Savings and Credit Co-operative Society; Deputy General Secretary of the International Bar Association (IBA) East African Region, Member of the International Bar Associations Committee on the Future of the IBA and Treasurer of the Africa Bar Association.
