1 THAMES HIGH SCHOOL Principal s Message Thank you to all those parents and caregivers who came into school last night to discuss their student s progress. The link between home and school is a very important one, which supports success for students. If you would still like to meet with the teachers, please phone the school or contact the teacher directly by ( addresses are on the school website). Today our school choir is at Bethlehem College in Tauranga competing in the Big Sing Competition. They have all put in a huge amount of work preparing for this event and we wish them well. Special thanks to Jayne Tankersley and Stuart Du Preez for all the time they have put in as well. With the long weekend and parent interviews this week, our newsletter doesn t have our usual sports news. Rest assured Kelly, our sports coordinator, will have news and results from events in for next week. Parent Portal We have been experiencing problems with access to the parent portal thank you to those parents/caregivers that have informed the school of the problems. We are working with our IT people to rectify the problems and hopefully minimize the time the parent portal is down. Please continue to use it, as the portal is your way of accessing up-to-date information about your child. Should you experience any problems, please continue to inform the school.

2 Attitude Health Presentation This coming Wednesday Attitude Health will be here to run workshops with our students. All students will attend these sessions with their year group. The Year 9 and 10 students will be around assessing risks and possible outcomes. They will look at the social and emotional reasons behind young people drinking and taking drugs. The Year 11 students will be looking at goal setting, believing in themselves and skills for a healthy future. The Year 12 and 13 students will be looking at decision making and making good choices. This will consider the social and emotional aspects of relationships and making good choices within that relationship. We have found that these workshops have, in previous years, been very powerful and timely education for young people. The school is covering all costs for these workshops. Arriving Late to School Just a reminder to all parents/caregivers, if students are late to school you need to provide a reason (written note, text, or phone call to office). Students should then go straight to the Attendance Officer to report in. This ensures their attendance records are marked correctly. Your help with this is appreciated. School Photos The class and individual photos are now available for students to collect from the main office. Haurakian School Year Book Copies of the Haurakian for both 2012 and 2013 are still available from the school Accounts office. If you have paid your school donation in full (or at least $20 of this) for each year, you will be entitled to copies. Payment of School Fees and Donation These can be paid now, please use the parent portal (accessed through the school website) to check the amount owing, or contact the Accounts office. The school bank account number for on-line banking is: Westpac, Thames Payment can also be made by cheque or EFTPOS at the Accounts office. 3 Careers News Term 2 Tertiary Open Days Term 2 began with an enthusiastic team of students and parents travelling to the University of Otago in Dunedin for the May Open Day. The trip included a full day visiting a number of hostel accommodation places, being the guests for dinner at Aquinas College, presentations from exstudents on the life and times at Otago, a Highlanders rugby game at the Forsyth Barr Stadium and attendance at lectures and presentations at the University. Overall a fantastic experience for all concerned and a real insight into what it is to be a student in the deep south. Also a trip was made early this term to the Waikato University Open Day where students took in hostel tours, lectures and presentations. Another great opportunity to see this institute in action and to get a feel for what it is like to study there. The second term is a busy term as students in year 13 begin to consolidate on the information they have been given from University and Polytechnic presentations and start to make real decisions for 2015 from the research they have been doing. Attending Open Days is a great way to get a feel for a place of study. 4 Dates Coming up for Liaison Visits June 17 - Victoria University June 18 - Lincoln University Tertiary Planning at school on a Friday at 1.30pm is up and running again; students are encouraged to come along and find out new information or to ask questions about further study options. BOP The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is having an Open Day on Friday 20 June and students are encouraged to go independent of the school. Good luck to Courtney Smith and Samantha Hodder who have headed down to be students for a day in the Sport and Recreation programmes this week. WINTEC The Huge Day Out is happening on Friday 27 June. Students in year 11, 12 and 13 have had the opportunity to listen to a presentation from WINTEC at school and now have the opportunity to visit the WINTEC campus in Hamilton. This campus has a range of courses from degree to certificate level and is an excellent place for students to get a feel for the next step. Health Careers We recently had a successful day at Thames Hospital with the Nursing and Midwifery Expo organised in conjunction with the Rural Health Institute. Students were presented with pathways to these two careers and given hands-on and tours of the hospital. Did you know that New Zealand has 18 different institutes offering Nursing qualifications? Also two of our students Annie Chen and Callum Hammond recently spent a day at the Waikato Hospital Clinical School, a day organised for year 13 students interested in pursuing medicine as a career. This was a hugely successful day with many hands-on opportunities.

5 Gateway at Thames High School This term has seen 30 plus students placed in work based learning opportunities in Thames and the surrounding communities. This programme is invaluable for teaching students about an industry they are interested in and puts practice to the units of work they are studying in the classroom.
