7 The LightWays system is a protective Fiber Management System used for routing, storing, and protecting optical fiber patchcords, pigtails, and riser cables. Applications include use in central offices, headends, shelters, hubs, nodes, customer premises data and telecommunications closets. LightWays provides a fast and simple, yet safe and efficient method of routing optical fibers among fiber distribution frames, panels, splice cabinets, and termination equipment. The LightWays Open Channel feature enables easier installation, maintenance, and additions because fibers are always accessible.
8 2.3 LIGHTWAYS DUCTING SYSTEM THE SIEMON COMPANY LIGHTWAYS The LightWays system consists of solid straight sections for horizontal routes and slotted straight sections for vertical drops. Intersections are used for making turns upward, downward, right or left, or into/across horizontal routes. Various drops permit fibers to enter equipment frames from directly overhead, offset to the front or rear of the frames. Standard mounting kits are available for attaching the system to walls, ladder racking, or directly to the frames. Vertical drops and trumpets maintain proper bend radius All parts snap together, requiring no hardware Vertical drops can be quickly added in a matter of a few minutes, by merely adding a cutout with the Cutout Tool LightWays is the only true open channel system all fiber cables can be placed into open channels rather than feeding or pulling cables through Solid straight sections are used for horizontal routes, featuring hinged lids for accessibility to fibers Vertical drops with ramps are utilized for dropping from a horizontal run to ensure proper bend radius and fiber protection Optical fibers are protected throughout the system and the design ensures proper bend radius control. Now available in 4 in. x 2 in. (100mm x 50mm) for low profile applications. This size is ideal for use where a large number of patchcords will be routed in an area with relatively low ceilings Configuration Software is available for LightWays layouts and parts list. 12 2.7 LIGHTWAYS DUCTING SYSTEM THE SIEMON COMPANY RELATED PRODUCTS Open channel concept provides the most accessibility to fibers, and round tubing is also available for dropping fibers from horizontal routes to 2 in. (50mm) or 1.25 in. (30mm) vertical systems. Square tubing is available which has a unique split feature which enables the cable to be laid in. The Complete Tool Kit includes all of the tooling needed for installation of 100, 200, 400 and 800 series: cutout tools, miter boxes, and slotting tools. Cutout tools perform cutouts in the horizontal sections to permit drops. The miter boxes are used to cut the straight sections so as to ensure that the systems are cut square. Slotting tools cut the end slots that enable the LightWays system parts to snap together. The Fiber Strain Relief Kit is used to retain fiber cables at intersections, ensuring that cables lay on the bottom of the system, free from strain. Universal Radius Guides can be affixed to tees, elbows, drops, etc. to maintain a proper bend radius for exiting patchcords. The Velcro Kit is used to attach LightWays in areas where no auxiliary framework or ladder racking exists. LWD Round Tubing (Use with LWD-209 end caps) 0.75 in. 48 7.1 WORK GLOSSARY AREA Adapter Used to connect or join two connectors. Also sometimes referred to as a coupling. APC Angled Physical Contact. A connector designed with an 8 angle at the end of the ferrule. Return Loss Performance = 65 db minimum. Note: APC connector interface improves connector performance by maximizing Return Loss. Attenuator A passive device used to reduce the signal strength in a system. Available in many different mounting configurations. BER Bit Error Rate Bend Relief Boot Refers to the support unit just behind the connector, designed to prevent sharp bends in the fiber. Also called strain relief or boot. Buffered Fiber An un-jacketed cable. It consists of a coated fiber surrounded by a 900 micron diameter buffer. CO Central Office Cladding The lower refractive index material that surrounds the fiber core and provides optical insulation and protection. Cleave The controlled breaking of a fiber so that its surface is smooth. Coating Protective layer of material deposited onto the cladding portion of an optical fiber. Connector A mechanical device used to join and align two fibers together and to provide a means for decoupling the fibers. Coupler A fiber optic device used to couple light from one fiber into another fiber or to divide power between several fibers. db The abbreviation for decibel, which is the standard unit used to express signal gain or loss. Dispersion A measure of the frequency dependence in transmittance. Also called pulse spreading, since dispersion causes a broadening of the input pulses along the length of the fiber. Two major types of dispersion are modal and material. Can be caused by multiple frequency components having different propagation characteristics, or the relationship between the refractive index and wavelength or frequency. One of the limits on bandwidth. Dispersion Shifted Fiber A singlemode fiber that has zero dispersion wavelength at 1550 nanometers. Dispersion Unshifted Fiber A singlemode fiber that has zero dispersion wavelength at 1300 nanometers. Often called conventional or unshifted fiber. Duplex Cable Cable with two fibers. DWDM Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer. Same as WDM except more wavelengths can be accommodated. Ferrule A component with a precise capillary which holds a fiber in place and aids in its alignment. The typical ferrule has an OD of 2.5mm, and a capillary of about 126 microns. Singlemode versions normally carry tolerances on OD, ID and concentricity of one micron or less. The material of choice since the late 80s has been tetragonal zirconia with a grain size less than 0.5 microns. FDF Fiber Distribution Frame Fiber A single, separate optical transmission element characterized by a core and cladding, with an outside diameter of 125 microns. Fiber Curl This is a term that has become useful for describing what happens to a fiber when there is misalignment in a mass or ribbon splicing joint. In this case the fiber(s) curl away from the joint to take up the slack or stress caused by misalignment of fiber lengths at the joint. FMS Fiber Management System. Fresnel Reflection The reflection of light from an optical discontinuity. For instance, in the common unterminated, unangled fiber end return loss will be about db (the unterminated loss of non- APC connector). The APC performance is better due to the management of the loss via the angle of the plane between the glass and the air. Fusion Splice The joining of two fibers by heating and fusing (melting) them together. GHz Gigahertz. One billion hertz. Gigabit Transmission of one billion of bits per second; Gbps. Hertz (Hz) A measure of frequency as defined in units of cycles per second. Index of Refraction The ratio between the speed of light in a vacuum and lights speed in a referenced medium. Index Matching Material A material, usually a liquid, gel, paste or film, whose index of refraction matches the fiber glass used for the fiber. It is used at the end face of the fiber to reduce Fresnel reflections. Insertion Loss The attenuation (loss) of power at a connector interface, expressed in db. Intrinsic Loss The theoretical minimum loss that a given device will have as a function of its nature, inherent to the variables of the manufacturing process. This term is also used to describe the theoretical minimum loss that a splice joint, coupler, or splitter will exhibit. Jacket (Sheath) The outermost segment of a fiber optic cable, generally a plastic material. Jacketed Cable Buffered fiber protected with a strength member, such as Aramid Yarn (Kevlar ), and an outer jacket. Jumper A length of cable with a connector terminated at both ends. Also called a patchcord. Kevlar The material used as the strength element in cable. Developed and trademarked by DuPont.
49 7.2 Kilometer One thousand meters (3,281 feet). Laser Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A device that produces coherent light with a narrow range of wavelengths. Loss Synonymous with attenuation. A loss of power, measured in decibels; i.e. not fused. Loose Tube A protective polymer tube, often filled with a gel, used to contain one or more fibers. Meter A metric unit of measure that equals inches. MHz Megahertz, one million hertz. MIC Media Interface Connector. This is a pair of fiber optic connectors that link the fiber media to the FDDI or other cable. The MIC consists of both the plug terminated to a optical cable and the receptacle which is contain within the FDDI node. Microbending Loss Loss due to microscopic bends in the fiber. Micrometer One millionth of a meter; equivalent to micro-inches. Also, see micron. Micron (µm) Micrometer One millionth of a meter (39.37 microinches). Multi-Fiber Cable A cable with three or more fibers. Multiplexing The combination of two or more signals from two or more channels into a single output. Nanometer One billionth of a meter; equivalent to microinches. OTDR Optical Time Domain Reflectometer. A device that measures distance to a reflective surface by measuring the time it takes for a lightwave pulse to reflect from that surface. PC Physical Contact. The term used to describe connectors that allow the ends of the fiber to make contact (within an adapter). Patchcord A length of cable with a connector terminated at both ends. Also called a jumper. Pigtail A length of cable with a connector terminated at one end only. Reflection Also called Back Reflection. The abrupt change in direction of a light beam at an interface between two dissimilar media so that the light beam returns into the medium from which it originated. Reflection from a smooth surface is termed specular, whereas reflection from a rough surface is termed diffuse. The higher the associate value, the better the performance expressed in db. Also, see Return Loss. Refraction The bending of a beam of light through an interface between two dissimilar media or in a medium whose refractive index is a continuous function of position (such as graded-index fiber). Return Loss Same as Reflection except the sign of the wave is positive. The amount of power reflected back into the source. The greater the return loss the better the performance. Expressed in db. SC Connector A plastic, rectangular connector body with a 2.5 millimeter diameter ceramic ferrule. The connector utilizes a push/pull snap-in concept. Service Cable A cable that connects an incoming or feeder signal to the premises. Can be used to describe the connection to a customer s premise, or the inter/intra facility multi-fiber connection from the outside plant to a headend. Simplex Cable Cable with only one fiber. Singlemode (SM) Optical fiber designed to propagate only one mode. Components associated with this type of fiber require much tighter alignment tolerance than multimode (MM) fiber and, as a result, are more expensive. Cable color code associated with singlemode fibers is yellow. Source A light emitting diode (LED) or LASER diode (LD) that emits optical signals into the fiber network in response to an electrical signal input. Splice, Fusion Permanent joining of fiber ends (without a connector) by heating and fusing them together. Splice, Mechanical The joining of two fibers by a mechanical method (e.g. crimped, clamped or epoxied). Splitter Also know as a coupler. ST Connector A metal or plastic connector with a 2.5 millimeter diameter ferrule. The connector utilizes a bayonet style, twist-lock coupling method. Transceiver A device that combines both functions of the transmitter and receiver, thereby providing both output and input interfaces. UL Underwriters Laboratories. UPC Ultra Physical Contact. The term used for enhanced Return Loss Performance (55dB minimum). Wavelength The distance, especially on an electromagnetic wave, that a wave travels in the time it takes to oscillate through a complete cycle. Wavelengths of visible light are measured in nanometers or microns. Wavelengths, 1310 and 1550nm These wavelengths, measured in nanometers, are the most popular wavelengths in telecommunication systems sources. WDM Wavelength Division Multiplexer. A combination of two or more optical signals at different wavelengths, transmitted over a common optical path, usually a single fiber. Zero Dispersion Slope The value of the chromatic dispersion slope at the fiber s zero dispersion wavelength. Zero Dispersion Wavelength The wavelength at which the fiber s chromatic dispersion equals zero.
