1 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: All West Virginia School Nutrition Association (WVSNA) members WVSNA Executive Board Faith Gravenmier Scholarships DATE: September 19, 2013 The West Virginia School Nutrition Association announces the Faith Gravenmier scholarship program for SNA members wishing to become Certified and/or Credentialed! SNA s Certification Program is based on the standards of practice and indicators in the Keys to Excellence in School Food and Nutrition Programs that define nationally accepted standards for quality programs. The WVSNA encourages every member to become nationally Certified and/or Credentialed through the SNA professional development program. To help make it possible, WVSNA will reimburse every member for the first year application fee associated with the level of Certification/Credentialing, along with the exam fee for Credentialing. Certification: All levels Beginning October 1, 2013, any WVSNA member pursuing SNA Certification can apply for reimbursement for the application fees ($14-$27). After successfully achieving any new level of Certification, WVSNA members can also receive reimbursement for the application fee associated with that level ($17-$27). Credentialing: WVSNA members wishing to become Credentialed will be reimbursed for the testing fees ($200) when they successfully pass the examination. In addition, newly Credentialed members will be eligible to receive reimbursement for their first year dues ($58).

2 Why Should You Become Certified? Becoming SNA certified and/or SNS Credentialed adds credibility to your position and to your school's program. It is also a factor in attracting people to careers in school foodservice and nutrition. Increase your knowledge and skills of food safety and nutrition to create a healthy school environment. Enhance your professional image with parents, children & school administrators. Stay current on issues concerning school nutrition initiatives. Demonstrate commitment to your profession. Provide a career ladder you can use to advance in the field from assistant, to cook, to manager, to director. Who is Eligible to Become Certified? Requirements 1. You must have a high school diploma or GED. 2. You must take a 10 hour SNA approved Nutrition Education Course or 1 college credit course in Nutrition. 3. You must take a 10 hour SNA approved Food Safety & Sanitation Core Course or 1 college credit course in Food Safety & Sanitation, HACCP or Microbiology. Easy Directions for Certification Level 1 (see the screen shots from the NFSMI website at the end of this letter): 1. National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI) offers two online courses that meet the above requirements. Both are free of charge. 2. Nutrition 101 will meet the Nutrition Education Course.

3 3. Serving It Safe will meet the Food Safety & Sanitation requirement. 4. Follow the step-by-step directions on the pages that follow to register with NFSMI and to register for the course(s). 5. Once both courses are finished, Complete New Certification Application and submit all necessary documentation (application, copy of diploma, copy of certificates from both courses, and payment) 6. Once you have been certified by SNA, complete a Faith Gravenmier Scholarship Application so you may be reimbursed for Certification Application Fee. 7. Display your new Certification Certificate within your kitchen/cafeteria. This certificate may be printed from your MySNA page.

4 Why Should You Pursue the School Nutrition Specialist Credential? SNA established the School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) Credentialing Program in 1997 to enhance the professional image of school nutrition professionals, elevate professional standards and enhance individual performance. The SNS Credential is a mark of excellence and achievement that reflects what it takes to manage school nutrition programs in today s challenging climate. Who is Eligible for the School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) Credential? You must have a Bachelor s Degree or higher or You must have 60 hours of college credits or an Associate Degree and an additional 30 college credits in nutrition-related fields or at least 3 years work experience is certain related areas. 7 5. Click Child Nutrition to locate Nutrition 101 or Food Safety to locate Serving it Safe. 6. It is recommend you only sign up for once course at a time. Complete course number one then sign up and begin the second course.

8 7. Scroll down until you find the correct course. You can then hit Register Now on the right side.

9 8. Begin the class. 9. When you complete the class you will be able to print a certificate. I recommend you down load the certificate and save it on your computer as well as print it.
