2 SMALL IS BIG. Art+Design AT BURLINGTON COLLEGE Believe it or not, we are one of the top ten smallest colleges in the country. Our small size makes us big on being able to provide student-centered and individualized education. This means that careful faculty advising, student involvement in designing your program of study, small seminar-style classes, one-on-one mentoring, experiential learning, and narrative evaluations are all part of the rich Art+Design learning experience at Burlington College. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Taylor Bruleigh 15 B.A. in Photography Taylor is from South Ryegate, a small town in central Vermont, but Taylor s goals are anything but small town. She is devoted to learning the art and craft of photography and has the kind of sassy attitude that won t settle for anything less than accomplishing what she has set out to do including a big time career in photography. 3 ART+DESIGN PROGRAMS Fine Arts (B.A.) The Fine Arts program is designed to provide a broad foundation in the arts, as well as the opportunity to focus in one area such as painting, drawing, mixed-media, or photography. Art history and criticism are emphasized, as are technical foundations. As you develop more advanced skills, you are able to work more independently in tutorials or guided independent studies, as well as internships and apprenticeships with local artists. Graphic Design (B.F.A. and A.A.) In the Graphic Design program, you learn to organize and communicate your creative vision in the ever-changing world of print, digital, and interactive media. Through your coursework, you research social, cultural, and commercial trends, analyze changing values, brainstorm ideas, study design history, and convert your findings into visual messages. You are encouraged to think abstractly and critically, and to interpret concepts digitally using industry standard technology. Interdisciplinary Arts (B.F.A.) The Interdisciplinary Arts program enables you to develop visual, conceptual, and creative abilities essential to your professional success. A studio-centered and digital-based art curriculum provides you with new ways of seeing, thinking, and expressing youself in the cross-boundary hybridization of the arts. Studies in technique, art history, art criticism, and critical theory will construct a creative framework that allows you to experiment and explore your own individual voice and creative vision. Photography (B.A. and B.F.A.) The Photography program combines rigorous instruction in craft and technique, coupled with an unusually personalized approach to taking pictures. Great attention is paid to each student s way of seeing. The ultimate goal of mastering the technical processes of the medium is viewed as a means to a more intense observation that yields distinctive photographs. Courses are offered that give you the tools to work in both digital and film, and to explore the ways these two formats can be combined. BEYOND TRADITIONAL BOUNDARIES Visual Art is a diverse, exciting and challenging field in which to launch a career. The role of the visual artist continues to push beyond traditional boundaries. Many are now using their visual arts skills as activists and entreprenuers, while incorporating the latest technologies. Others are taking on new media to challenge the way we look at the world or enable us to view it from a rare perspective. Graduates from our Art+Design programs have gone on to further study and/or careers in teaching, arts administration, graphic design, professional fine arts, commercial photography, photojournalism, and fine arts photography. INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTS In this exciting new field of study now offered at Burlington College, you have the opportunity to combine course work from a broad range of visual arts disciplines to create a degree that focuses on your own creative vision and goals. 3 Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) Degrees Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degrees Every student must complete the College s Liberal Arts Requirements and earn 120 credits to achieve the Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Arts degree. Students explore broad areas of the liberal arts and may choose from a range of course options. Interdisciplinary courses may also be used, as designated, to satisfy these requirements. All students are required to complete an upper-level internship. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree is considered to be the most extensive bachelor s degree that you can receive in the visual arts. This option is for students who want to focus more intensely within their major, but because of greater course requirements students don t have as much flexibilty in designing their degree. Our B.F.A. degree consists of 69 credits. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree is less extensive, but still contains essential core courses within the major. This option is for students with a strong interest in an area of study, but also want to tailor their degree to fit other interests and goals. Our B.A. in Fine Arts is 48 credits and our B.A. in Photography is 42 credits. Burlington was ranked the 2nd happiest and 4th healthiest place to live in the U.S. by Self magazine. She has developed the skills and vision needed to launch a successful career. Gabrielle has already shown her work at GoggleWorks, S.P.A.C.E. Gallery, Vintage Jewelers, The Haybarn Gallery, The Gallery at Burlington College, The South End Art Hop, and the 124th Annual Exhibition at the Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Gallery in New York City.

4 Associate of Arts Degree Art+Design Faculty The Graphic Design degree is a 60-credit program in liberal arts with a concentration in graphic design. Beyond the requirements for the Associate s Degree program, it allows students to take up to 30 credits in graphic design, fine art and photography. Students take 21 credits of required graphic design and fine art studio courses, plus an additional nine credits of studio electives. Prerequisites for higher-level courses must be met before those courses can be taken. The program is designed so that it can be completed in four semesters of full-time course work. VISUAL ARTS IN CUBA Spend a J-Term in Havana The people, the vibrancy, the colors, and the contrasts make photography in Cuba an amazing artistic experience. This undergraduate level course offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Cuban culture and to gain worthwhile insights about the remarkable Cuban people and their way of life. Cuban Film in Havana Study Cuban film, its history, its portrayals of Cuban life and culture, its themes, and its special character. Examine important historical and political influences in great Cuban films including, Soy Cuba, a Soviet-Cuban co-production, and Lucia, by Humberto Solas, to Tomas Gutierrez Alea s, The Last Supper. Discuss film such as Strawberry and Chocolate and Guantanamara from the 1990 s and Fernando Perez s more contemporary films like Suite Habana and Marti. Survey the rich and unique cinematic output of this small but influential Caribbean nation. Time will also be spent touring the city to explore some of the evocative locations used by Cuban filmmakers that give their films such distinct flavors. ANNUAL BIG SPRING ART PARTY This event is an annual arts tradition at Burlington College. It includes two exciting art events over a weekend. On Friday night, Gumbo Art Exhibit showcases a wide variety of visual arts by students and faculty members, shown throughout the halls of the College. Then the Burlington College Student Film Festival kicks off Saturday night, screening the best student films of the year. Peter Curtis Director of Photography Germaine School of Photography Peter Curtis has been making and exhibiting photographs and sharing his knowledge of the craft of photography for over 40 years. He instituted and taught a photography program at Hampshire Country School in Rindge, New Hampshire, a school for gifted children with emotional and behavioral disabilities. He also created Community Photographic on Church Street in Burlington, Vermont. Community Photographic was a community darkroom, photography workshop center, and gallery serving students of all ages and abilities. Peter has exhibited his work internationally. Local exhibitions include one man shows at the Furchgott-Sourdiffe Gallery, The Amy Tarrant Gallery, and the Fleming Museum. pcurtis@burlington.edu THE GALLERY AT BURLINGTON COLLEGE Each month, the Gallery at Burlington College opens a new exhibit of work by visual artists from the region. A wide variety of mediums have been showcased including painting, photography, fine woodworking, sculpture, and multi-media. At the end of each semester the gallery features the degree projects of our seniors who are visual arts students. Robert C. Kirk Creative Director Community Faculty in Graphic Design B.A. Art Education Johnson State College Robert has been a graphic designer for 30+ years. He began his career working in a print shop in the late 1970 s and then as a publication designer at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in the early 1980 s. After which he held various graphic design and art director positions in Massachusetts and Vermont winning numerous design awards from organizations including the Ad Club of Western Massachusetts, Worcester Ad Club, Connecticut Art Directors Club, Graphic Design USA, University and College Designers Association and Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Interdisciplinary Arts Goddard College Our faculty are truly amazing. Like Dana, who has worked as a fine artist, interior designer, and N.Y.C. Broadway scenic artist for over a decade. She led the painting crews for Tony award-winning scenery in shows such as Billy Elliot, Mary Poppins, Spamalot, The Lion King, The Color Purple, and Mamma Mia. Her interior design spaces can be found in New York City, Ohio, Florida, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Her paintings and drawings have been shown in galleries in New York and Vermont. In 2009, Dana moved to the Burlington area where she completed her M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College.
