2 IMPACT BY DESIGN West Michigan Center for Arts + Technology has set out to create something special. WMCAT s best-practice programs are grounded in design thinking and project-based learning. WMCAT empowers young people and ignites a passion for learning by way of creative problem solving and experimenting in video game design, illustration, ceramics, photography, film and music production, fiber arts, and other creative outlets. All courses are taught by professional teaching artists in groups with student-to-teacher ratio of 12:1, which accommodates different learning styles. Our caring instructors, who have been trained in positive youth development strategies, empower students to share their voices. WMCAT offers daytime opportunities to both middle and high school students in West Michigan. Through this opportunity, schools can craft a program that fits within their schedule and meets their needs. WMCAT provides instruction, facility, equipment and materials.
3 ARTS + TECH PROGRAM Create something beautiful. Essential to the impactful WMCAT experience is our inspiring space, centrally located in downtown Grand Rapids. Our students work with professional tools in studio spaces that are open, edgy and tailored for artistic creation. Our facility includes a ceramic studio, music and video lab, photography studio with a darkroom, textile studio, gathering area for socializing, and gallery space for student work.
4 DESIGN AN EXPERIENCE Create an Experience MIX + SOCIAL INNOVATORS Students are placed in teams to explore and tackle a pressing community issue using arts and technology as a basis for inquiry, critical thinking and practical application. Examples of teams may include costume, music-production, stopmotion animation, set design, film-production and more. Each experience is unique and designed to fit the needs of students and partnering schools. Try a Field Trip MAKE IT TAKE IT Students rotate between three art-making activities for a hands-on introduction to an art and design discipline. ART FUSION Students are immersed in a project-based learning experience that fuses art + technology into school s standard curriculum. WMCAT staff work with partnering programs to design projects that fuse 21st century skills and hands-on learning experiences into unique and engaging learning experiences.
