Contact us for more information about our graduate programs: Phone: (417) grad@drury.edu Master of Arts in Studio Art and Theory The Summer Institute for Visual Arts at Drury University provides an intensive two-month period each summer to focus on artistic development in a critically driven environment while earning graduate level course credit toward a Master of Arts in Studio Art and Theory (MART) degree. Drury University provides a valuable liberal arts context for graduate study in the visual arts by emphasizing a well-rounded education, project-based learning and strong community involvement. Our unique three-summer MART program structure offers small class sizes, access to a wide range of facilities and resources, and the opportunity to work directly with committed and professionally engaged faculty. Three Summer Residencies By combining artist residency and graduate program structures, the MART degree program bridges the gap between an academic undergraduate education and a professional art practice. The curriculum consists of three summer sessions of intensive artistic engagement that include studio and theory courses (9 credits) plus one online seminar (3 credits) for a total of 30 hours of coursework. Professional Faculty Each summer has four new visiting artists with experiences and skill-sets varied to the needs of the program. The visiting artists (along with faculty and staff) work directly with each student to formulate, clarify and achieve specific goals, and lead each year s cohort in an attempt to understand and evaluate the results. Through this process, participating artists not only engage the creative process, but, by extension, learn how others might be brought into that process as well.

3 Personalized Learning From the first day, participating artists will be encouraged to enter into dialogue about their own intended artwork in search of theoretical clarity about those intentions. Participating artists develop a capacity for independent practice and scholarship under the guidance of visiting artists, faculty and staff, who, as experienced and engaged practitioners, provide first-hand understanding of contemporary art issues. Reflection on theoretical, critical and technical issues take place in an integrated process. Five related questions are the basis of these conversations: What do I want to make and why? What skills and processes will be necessary to realize my intentions? How will I know when I have succeeded? How might I improve the result? What is the significance or value of what has been accomplished? Each student is provided a dedicated workspace and broad access to the university s facilities and resources that include ceramics, sculpture, and photography studios, CNC router, laser cutter, 3D printers, large-scale printers, a television studio, video editing bays and much more. Assistants specializing in different areas of technical expertise are available for support and guidance when students are interested in taking advantage of specific facilities. Who Should Apply? Emerging and aspiring artists who hold an undergraduate degree (from any field) who wish to develop their art practice. Artists further in their career looking to participate in critical dialogue and reinvigorating their art practice. Artists working in any medium (painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, etc.) including video and other digital media, installation, socially-engaged and hybrid practices. Artists who wish to develop a portfolio for application to an MFA program. Non-degree seeking or post-graduate students interested in the opportunity to work with our visiting artist fellows. Art educators wanting to pursue their Masters degree during the summer months.

Recent visiting artists include: Matt Borruso received his MFA from Yale University in His current work examines processes of replication in various forms such as paintings, wax castings, found sculptural objects, digital files, book making, and graphite drawings. He has taught at Stanford University, San Francisco Art Institute, and California College of the Arts. Mark Clare works to engage, provoke and agitate the viewer s social conscience through his visual interpretations of the politics of globalization, society and public sphere. He has taught at the National College of Art & Design, Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology (IADT) and the Limerick School of Art & Design. He currently lives and works in Dublin. James Gobel creates paintings made of felt, yarn and other fabrics that refer to a range of artistic movements. He is currently an Associate Professor of MFA Fine Arts and Assistant Chair of the Painting/Drawing Program at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Jonn Herschend is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker and experimental publisher whose work explores fiction, reality and the narrative structures. He has been a visiting lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, San Francisco State University, California College of the Arts and Stanford University. Chelsea Knight is an artist and educator specializing in video and video installation, with an emphasis on experimental narrative and documentary forms. She teaches at Parsons the New School for Design, SUNY Purchase, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Christine Laquet uses different forms of expression (including installation, painting, performance and film) to challenge the binaries we continually reconstruct. She has taught workshops at ESBAN Nantes School of Art (France), Gyeonggi Creation Center (Korea), and Norköpping University (Sweden) among others. She is based in Nantes, France. Andrea Polli is an artist working at the intersection of art, science and technology whose practice includes media installation, public interventions, curating and directing art, and community projects and writing. She is an Associate Professor of Art and Ecology and the Mesa Del Sol Endowed Chair of Digital Media at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Two letters of recommendation from professional or education sources. A personal statement indicating the applicant s desire and ability to pursue a graduate degree in studio art and theory. Resumé or CV listing educational, professional and other achievements. A portfolio of 20 images, five minutes of video or other evidence representing commitment and/or creative accomplishment. A candidate needing 30 or fewer credits to complete the required undergraduate degree may be considered for provisional enrollment. Apply Online!
