1 Government of Nunavut Employment Opportunity Registered Nurse, OR/PARR/DS Qikiqtani General Hospital Department of Health & Social Services IQALUIT, NUNAVUT Re-Advertisement We require an indeterminate Registered Nurse for the Operating Room, at the Qikiqtani General Hospital (QGH). The work is scheduled Monday to Friday on an eight (8) hour shift with on-call status at least 50% of the time. Education: Other: Bachelor of Nursing Degree (preferred) from a Canadian University or recognized equivalent or a Nursing Diploma from a recognized Canadian nursing institution. Perioperative Nursing Certificate (preferred) Eligibility for registration with RNANT/NU Current IV insertion and WHMIS Training (preferred) Excellent communication and assessment skills Knowledge of Operating Room Standards of Care and Practice Knowledge of Anaesthetic agents, equipment and proper procedures in Anaesthetic emergency. Current CPR and current ACLS. Knowledge of all specialties offered under QGH surgical services Ability to work in a cross-cultural setting is required Recovery Room and Day Surgery experience (preferred) Minimum a year of recent nursing practice in an Operating Room setting is required. Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, OR/RR/DS, the OR Nurse is an integral member of the surgical team. The OR Nurse provides physical patient care in both the circulating and scrub role, is able to recognize and respond effectively to urgent and emergency situations, promotes a safe environment for patients and colleagues, manages resources effectively, and contributes to positive working relationships promoting problem-solving and decision-making with all members of the health care team, following standards, guidelines and scope of professional nursing practise. This position plays a major role in the delivery of surgical services and the achievement of desirable client outcomes. Ability to be on-call at least 50% of the time is required. The successful applicant must be willing to cross train in Day Surgery and Recovery Room. For full-time, permanent nurses, Recruitment Bonuses include: $5,000 on start date, $5,000 at 18 months of service and $10,000 at 30 months of service. Other bonuses include a $9,000 Annual Frontline Allowance and a $375 Monthly Retention Bonus totaling $4,500 per year. Subsidized Staff Housing is available. The Perioperative Registered Nurse is a member of the surgical team that focuses on identifying and meeting the individual needs of the surgical patient throughout the perioperative experience. The Perioperative Registered Nurse provides excellent care to the surgical population using critical thinking skills guided by the ORNAC Standards, Guidelines and Position Statements for Perioperative Registered Nursing Practice. Working in collaboration with the health care team, the Perioperative Registered Nurse uses basic and expanded nursing knowledge to address the physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, and spiritual responses of the patient to the surgical event, with the objective of maintaining or regaining optimal patient health. 3. SCOPE Describe the impact the position has on the area in which it works, or if it impacts other departments, the government as a whole, or the public directly or indirectly. How does the position impact those groups/individuals, the organization and/or budgets? What is the magnitude of that impact? There are currently three Perioperative Registered Nurse positions in the Operating Room. The incumbent takes direction from the Nurse Manager. Services offered include General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, ENT, Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Dental Surgery. Knowledge of procedures in all areas is required in order to provide quality surgical care. Surgical services are a major activity driver within the hospital. The capacity, effectiveness and efficiency of the surgical team have a major impact on overall performance of the hospital and on patient outcomes. The OR Nurse is an integral part of the surgical team and plays a major role in the delivery of surgical services and the achievement of desirable client outcomes. Under the supervision of the OR Nurse Manager, the OR Nurse must consistently apply the knowledge, skills and abilities to provide quality care for all perioperative patients as he/she fulfills various roles (e.g. Circulating, Scrub, Recovery room, Day Surgery Nurse, and some CSR duties). The skills and knowledge requirements of the position make it unique within the range of nursing positions at the hospital. Perioperative RN Page 1 Evaluated 2011

3 4. RESPONSIBILITIES Describe major responsibilities and target accomplishments expected of the position. List the responsibilities that have the greatest impact on the organization first and describe them in a way that answers why the duties of the position are being performed. For a supervisory or management position, indicate the subordinate position(s) through which objectives are accomplished. The Perioperative Nurse is responsible and accountable for providing individualized patient care (ORNAC standards). This role includes, but is not limited to: Advocate for the sedated or anaesthetized surgical patient. Serves as a link between surgical suite and the remainder of the hospital to provide continuity of care during all phases of surgery (preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative). Organize activities to focus on the needs of the surgical patient. Coordinate the multidisciplinary team within the surgical setting. Exhibits clinical skills supported by Perioperative Nursing education and evidence-based research. The Perioperative Nurse must exhibit: Specialized surgical nursing knowledge including anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, aseptic technique and assessment skills; Professional responsibility and accountability for practice; Critical thinking and clinical decision making skills; Organizational and communication skills; Teaching and leadership Psychomotor skills Ability to establish professional working relationships with members of the multidisciplinary team Ability to work independently and collaboratively to provide focused patient care The Perioperative nurse practices in a professional manner, according to professional standards and the Code of Ethics through the Canadian Nurses Association. He/she provides supportive care to patients, their families and other members of the team). The nurse provides a safe environment, responds to urgent and/or emergent situations in a timely and appropriate fashion and manages the resources of the surgical suite. The nurses are responsible for ordering and restocking of all equipment, supplies as well as drugs for the OR, RR and DS, and maintain the Operating Rooms ready for both elective and emergency cases. The OR nurse is required to apply surgical skills and knowledge in both routine and emergency situations, in the OR, in RR, and in DS. Strong assessment skills and competency in decision making exercised in a timely manner are required. Perioperative RN Page 2 Evaluated 2011

4 5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Describe the level of knowledge, experience and abilities that are required for satisfactory job performance. Knowledge identifies the acquired information or concepts that relate to a specific discipline. Skills describe acquired measurable behaviours and may cover manual aspects required to do a job. Abilities describe natural talents or developed proficiencies required to do the job. These requirements are in reference to the job, not the incumbent performing the job. The required level of knowledge is most commonly acquired through a degree or diploma program in nursing, and at least one year of recent nursing practice in an Operating Room setting. This knowledge could be reinforced with a Perioperative Nursing certificate. Incumbents must have recent on-call experience, be willing to successfully complete all required certification programs and work in a multi-faceted and ever-changing environment. Knowledge of the Operating Room Standards of Care and Practice as per the ORNAC Guidelines. Knowledge of all specialties offered under surgical services. It is expected that the Perioperative nurse is able to anticipate the needs of the Surgeon, Anaesthetist and the rest of the surgical team. This requires extensive knowledge of surgical procedures and anatomy related to varying specialties. Knowledge and experience working with adults and children, and with the physically and mentally challenged patients is essential, including the ability to perform independent patient assessments in all areas, and the ability to recognize and report changes in health status of patients in a clear, concise and timely manner. Ability to work in a cross-cultural setting is required. Perioperative nurse must be able to think in an abstract manner to utilize materials available to address very unusual circumstances during both elective and emergency surgery. This includes the ability to problem solve and improvise, particularly due to the isolation of our location and the sometimes extended length of time required to obtain specific supplies. 5 6. WORKING CONDITIONS List the unavoidable, externally imposed conditions under which the work must be performed and which create hardship for the incumbent. Express frequency, duration and intensity of each occurrence in measurable time (e.g. every day, two or three times a week, 5 hours a day). Physical Demands Indicate the nature of physical demands and the frequency and duration of occurrences leading to physical fatigue or physical stress. Daily lifting, moving and positioning unconscious, semi-conscious patients. Moving heavy equipment, instrument sets. Daily standing for extended periods of time (maybe in awkward positions). Daily independently transferring patient via stretchers. Frequent on-call is required (50%), possibly resulting in interrupted private life and sleep patterns while still having to complete daily list (with specialists) regardless of call-backs. Environmental Conditions Indicate the nature of adverse environmental conditions to which the jobholder is exposed, and the frequency and duration of exposures. Include conditions that increase the risk of accident, ill health, or physical discomfort. Exposure to infectious diseases. Daily exposure to hazardous and/or toxic chemicals and drugs. Potential for exposure to abusive/combative patients who are under the influence of drugs/anaesthetics. Exposure to high stress situations during stat critical cases. Sensory Demands Indicate the nature of demands on the jobholder s senses. These demands can be in the form of making judgments to discern something through touch, smell, sight, and/or hearing. It may include concentrated levels of attention to details though one or more of the incumbents senses. Daily exposure to high noise level from cleaning and sterilizing equipment used in CSR. Daily exposure to strong and sometimes offensive odours. Must constantly select and monitor audible signals from different equipments in the OR and ignore other, sometimes loud sounds, such as suction equipment and cautery machine smoke evacuators. 6 Mental Demands Indicate conditions within the job that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue that would increase the risk of such things as tension or anxiety. Required to equally participate in on-call status after hours, this can be difficult trying to adjust and difficult on personal life. Full OR slates and additions of emergencies can be stressful in meeting all the demands. Exposure to physical and verbal abuse/threats from patients who are under the influence of drugs/anaesthetics. Accommodating different visiting surgeons and anaesthetists can be stressful in meeting all demands. Perioperative RN Page 5 Evaluated 2011
