Randall Bond, M.D., Professor, Executive Medical Director Laurie Gesell, M.D., Assistant Professor, On-Call Toxicologist Robert Goetz, Pharm. Polk, H.P.T., Lecturer, Associate Director Jan Scaglione, Pharm.D., Adjunct Assistant Professor OVERVIEW The missions of the Cincinnati Drug & Poison Information Center (DPIC) are to (a) help prevent poison or drug exposures from becoming life threatening for the people living in the Center s service area and (b) decrease the incidence of drug abuse, chemical dependency and misuse. These missions will be accomplished by providing timely and readily accessible informational responses when exposures occur; developing and communication educational programs on poison and drug abuse prevention; consulting with industry; and serving as an informational resource for health professionals and hospitals in serving patients. Our vision is until there is a drug free world and homes are poison proof, there is the Cincinnati Drug & Poison Information Center. With 27 pharmacists or nurse American Association of Poison Control Center Certified Specialists in Poison Information (CSPI s), DPIC is one of the largest poison control centers in the country. In addition to poison control services, the staff also provides drug 91
2 information, drug abuse prevention and education, industry contract services and education of all levels of health professions students. The Drug & Poison Information Center has provided drug and toxicology information to the health care professionals and consumers in its region for over 30 years. During this time, it has served as an educational site in the areas of toxicology, drug information and drug abuse prevention for medical and pharmacy students, residents and fellows through a variety of settings. Left to right: (1st row) J. Scaglione, G. Tsipis, E. Otten, (2nd row) E. Siegel, M. Polk, G.R. Bond, S. Bryant HIGHLIGHTS The Cincinnati DPIC continues to provide service to and increase penetrance in 38 Ohio counties and 4.7 million people. Recent and ongoing world events have reinforced and more clearly defined our community and public health roles. The DPIC has collaborated with the Regional Medical Response Systems, various county disaster committees, and the Ohio Department of Health s Disaster Preparedness and Response program. Including working with the Ohio Department of Health Health Alert Network to send out 28 alert faxes to 78 regional hospitals on subjects such as smallpox, SARS, West Nile Virus, etc. 92
3 DPIC staff continued to demonstrate excellence in various areas of expertise and endeavor. Two of our Pharm.D. s Rob Goetz and Jan Scaglione, successfully sat for an exam to become Diplomats of the American Board of Applied Toxicology. Ms. Marsha Polk, founder and director of the DPIC s Prevention Research Unit, was chosen to receive the Walter Corbean Award. This award was established by the Alcoholism Council, along with the Cincinnati Chapter of the National Black Alcoholism Council to recognize those who have made contributions to suffering alcoholics/addicts, and particularly, have provided assistance to the recovery of African-American alcoholics and their families. The Hamilton County Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Board approved and funded the purchase of a new NOMAD (No More Alcohol and Drugs) van. Over the past 12 years, the current NOMAD van has been a highly visible resource for providing outreach programs wherever they are needed in Hamilton County. Taking the information to the people made prevention and educational programs and materials accessible to more of the community than ever before. The faculty and staff also continued their community education and prevention work. DPIC participated in seven emergency alerts sent throughout Ohio as part of the Ohio Early Warning system on substance abuse sentinel events and/or trends. Programs with the Cincinnati Public Schools Safe and Drug Free Schools, Greater Cincinnati Parents for a Drug-Free Society, Injury Prevention Coalition, Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services, Professionals in Substance Abuse, National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators, and the Ohio Resource Network for Safe and Drug Free Schools were among just some of the activities. Finally, in addition to an active speaker s bureau, the DPIC faculty and staff were involved in the following ongoing teaching activities: Twenty-one Doctor of Pharmacy students completed drug information clerkship rotations at the DPIC. Additionally, more than 50 medical students and residents rotated through DPIC as part of a toxicology elective, a community pharmacology course, clerkships and the injury prevention curriculum. Multiple lectures, grand rounds, and weekly case conference and journal clubs focus on toxicology, drug information, environmental chemical exposures, herbs and substance abuse pharmacology. A series of three lectures (Poison Control, Street Substance Abuse and Substance Abuse Prevention) and two related experiential programs were presented to 37 first year Pediatric Residents. As part of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Elective in Toxicology, 11 medical students and two residents rotated through DPIC. Five pharmacy externs and five nursing students rotated through DPIC. Ten medical students on their Pediatric Emergency Medical Rotation received applied toxicology experience through DPIC DPIC faculty and staff team taught two quarters of Pharmacology for the University of Cincinnati College of Evening and Continuing Education. 93
