1 Master of Arts (Industrial and Organizational Psychology) M.A. (Industrial and Organizational Psychology) Objectives The program aims to enable graduate students to analyze, to carry on the research projects, to explore the knowledge, to be initiative in the fields of industrial and organizational psychology. Students who complete the programs will be able to apply the knowledge in research work, administration, teaching and problem solving based on the ethical values in the careers. Ability to develop the organization in both public and private sectors will be also emphasized. Admission Applicants are required to possess : 1. A Bachelor s degree from accreditial university either in Thailand or abroad. 2. A G.P.A. of at least 2.5, or 2 years working experience, or holding the executive status for at least 5 years. 3. The Selection requires both written examination and interview for the applicants with G.P.A. of at least 2.5 or 2 years working experience Subjects to be tested are : specific knowledge in the field of study and English (TU- GET) 4. Applicants holding the executive status for at least 5 years take of an English examination (TU-GET) and interview. 5. Procedure for the entrance examination are announced by the master degree program in industrial and organizational psychology of the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University Academic System 1. It is the evening program 2 semesters a year. Duration of study is not more than 14 semesters. 2. Students have to take two refresher courses : PY 501, PY 502, 6 credits during the summer before really get enrolled in the program. These two courses, are not counted for the completion of the M.A.Program. 3. There are two curriculum systems : (1) plan A, with thesis, (2) Plan B, non thesis program but individual research is required. 4. A comprehensive examination : 4.1 Plan A : No Comprehensive examination. 4.2 Plan B : Taken after completion of all courses according to the curriculum with G.P.A. not lesser than Students of Plan A can register for thesis after the completion of 21 credits of required courses with G.P.A. not less than Students must pass the foreign language requirement before defending their thesis. The foreign language examination procedure is in accordance with the Thammasat University Regulation regarding the Master s Degree 1996 and 1998.

4 Courses Description Refresher Courses PY501 Fundamentals of Psychology A study of the theories and principles of psychology in perception, motivation learning, personality, and cognitive process in thinking and problem solving. PY502 Industrial and Organizational Psychology A study of the theories of organization, structure, policy and management system of organizations and industry, group dynamics, power and politics in organizations, employee relationships, interaction between individuals and work group and work environment. Required Courses PY611 Statistics for Behavioral Science Research A study of descriptive and analytical statistical methods for behavioral science research, including correlation, regression, analysis of variance and using computer programs for data analysis. The emphasis is on the students ability to read and interpret published research and use appropriate statistical methods for their own research. PY612 Psychological Test and Measurement Prerequisite : PY 611 A study of psychological testing and measurement in industry and organizations. Various tests such as aptitude test, vocational interest test, personality test, attitude test and predictors used in industry and organization are demonstrated. Practice using, modifying, making psychological test, including analyzing and reporting results of the psychological tests. PY631 Business Management and Psychology A study of relationship between business and psychology, strategies in development of human resources, management for changing, effects of external and international organization factors on human resource, roles of environmental factors in strategy planning, options in personnel planning, training and practice in changing management. PY641 Advanced Personnel Psychology Analysis and discussion of theories and research studies related to personnel psychology on the following topics: manpower planning, selection, placement, training, performance appraisal, and other important personnel problems. PY651 Ergonomics and Human Factors A survey of physical layout and human efficiency in working, analysis of the relationship among motion, human perception and characteristics of work, instruments and machines, accidents during work as a result of man and

5 machine interaction, concepts of machine design, instruments and working environment that suit human physiology, perception, efficiency and safety. PY711 Research Methods in Industrial and Organizational Psychology Prerequisite : PY 611 A study of research method and research design in industry and organizations, including evaluation of programs on organizations, hypothesis testing, selection of research method and evaluation, sampling techniques, gathering and grouping data, data analysis using computer programs, data interpretation and report writing. PY731 Seminar in Industrial and Organizational Psychology Study and analysis of the application of psychological principles, diagnosing and investigating methods employed in studying important factor affecting workers morale, standard of work, psychological relationship between management and workers, psychology for leadership, labor relations, organizational changes, and problems in industrial and organizational psychology at present. Elective Courses PY616 Experimental Designs in Psychology Prerequisite : PY 611 Study in principles and methods of experimental research, focus on both laboratory and field research as well as quasi experimental research, quality of experiment, experimental design, hypothesis testing, instrumentation, statistic methods for analysis and evaluation, and drawing conclusion of a research study. PY618 Theories and Methods in Attitude Measurement A study of concepts and various theories of attitude, components of attitude, relationship between attitude and work behavior in an organizations. Emphasis on techniques of attitude scale construction and data analysis. PY626 Psychology of Social Behavior in Organization A study of variables affecting social behaviors in organization, including group structure, group processes, influences of values and culture on social behavior and efficiency of working as a group. PY627 Consumer and Advertising Psychology Study in type and behavior of consumer, effects of psycho - social factors in decision making, satisfaction, loyalty, attitude, and attitude changing of consumer, ethics and principles of psychology in advertising, media selection, and methods in developing a research study in the area of consumer and advertising.

6 PY628 Psychology of Conflict Management A survey of approaches, theories, and factors of conflicts in organization; co-operation and competition ; trustmistrust among groups and individuals ; negotiation relating to conflicts in various situations ; stress caused by conflicts ; stress management in organizations. PY629 Psychology of Communication and Persuasion A survey of psychological processes of communication and persuasion ; learning behavior, attitudes and personalities of communicators and receivers ; processes of communication in different levels from working units and organizations; methods and skills in communication ; persuasion techniques; effects of communication and persuasion towards effective work in organizations. PY636 Psychology in Organizational Development A study of changes and development in an organization using psychological approaches, strategies and factors being used in organization development, analysis of social and organizational influences upon an employee s performance and attitudes, analysis of a resistance-to-change problem, concepts and techniques of managing various types of organizational changes. PY637 Psychology of Industrial Relations A survey of individual behavior in work places, placement and training, grievance procedures, employee counseling, employee efficiency improvement programs, compensation, administration in Thailand, employee relations with groups and the union, problems and problem solving in labor relations. PY638 Work Motivation A study of various theories of motivation, both content and process theories, job satisfaction and its relationship with motivation and performance efficiency, applications of theories of motivation to increase performance, problems and solutions of motivation in Thai society, research and development of motivational techniques to increase performance efficiency. PY639 Leadership Psychology Study in theory of leadership, types of leaders, differences between leader and manager, roles and responsibilities of leader in organization, techniques in skill development for work and personnel management, effectiveness of leadership by employing self survey and 360 degree feedback, team building for success, and a crossculture management. PY646 Personnel Selection and Evaluation Analysis and survey of problems in selection, job analysis, job evaluation, test using in organization, interviewing and other methods of selection, evaluation of predictors used in selection, construction of standardized norms, evaluation of recruitment and selection process.

7 PY647 Human Resource Development : Design and Evaluation A survey of approaches and theories of human resource development : practice in design and evaluation of human resource development by job analysis, personnel planning, career development ; design and evaluation of project to promote personnel in education and work ; survey needs in personnel training, curriculum management, and evaluating project training for further improvement ; emphasis on personnel characteristics and behavioral changes. PY648 Interview Techniques in Organizational Practices A study of interview techniques as a tool for information gathering, diagnosis for mutual decision making and behavior change. Emphasis is on the applications of interview techniques to selection, training, performance appraisal, counseling, and other situations. PY649 Performance Appraisal Prerequisite : PY 615 A study of theories and applications associated with performance appraisal in organizations, designs of performance measures and their applications. Emphasis is on the development and implementation of valid performance appraisal systems. PY656 Industrial Psychology and Modernization A study of theories of modernization, social changes and culture resulted from modernization, techniques in increasing products, influences of modernization affecting society and individual behaviors, roles of industrial psychologists in the changes to modernization. PY657 Environmental Psychology Study in relationship between human and natural and man-made environment, problems and chances of humanenvironment interaction, behaviors and behavior modification to fit with the environment or vice versa ; review of research studies related to relationship and evolution of behavior and environment, and effects of environmental factors on human in terms of benefits and safety issues. PY677 Cognitive Psychology and Creativity Study in process and methods of thought, human knowledge and intelligence, types of data processing as related to human behavior and creativity ; focus on theory and research study as well as practicing in different cognitive approaches. PY716 Advanced Statistics for Behavioral Science Study in statistical methods for multiple variables analysis including multiple regression, path analysis, factor analysis ; statistical analysis for experimental research focusing on selecting appropriate statistical methods and statistical computer package, interpretation and drawing conclusion.

8 PY726 Political Psychology Study in political analysis in terms of both internal and external human behavior ; employing psychology theories in explaining political issues at individual, group and society levels ; application of psychological theories for political movement. PY736 Reward and Compensation 3 credits Prerequisite : PY 638 Study in motivation theories and basic principles in designing reward and compensation for different levels of staff in organization, including designing salary, wage and benefits, effects on productivity, effectiveness and quality of life in workplace. PY737 Advanced Organizational Behavior Modification 3 credits A study of behavior modification using many techniques e.g. reinforcement, indifferences, imitation, and assertiveness, the emphasis is on training stress management, productivity improvement, absenteeism, lateness, turnover and safety. PY738 Practicum in Industrial and Organizational Psychology 3 credits Practicum in industrial factories, private or government organizations, not lesser than 180 hours, including term paper. PY746 Application of Personality Theories in Organization 3 credits Discussion of personality theories in aspects relating to human behavior in organization, the emphasis is on personality assessment to select right man for the right job, self-development and stress management suitable for personality type as well as adjustment to work changes. PY747 Decision Making and Problem Solving in Organization 3 credits A study of theories and processes of decision making, problem solving methodology of individuals and groups in an organization, principles and methods of brainstorming, creativity and decision making in various situations, evaluation of decision making, roles of leaders in decision making and problem solving in organizations. PY777 Experimental Designs in Psychology 3 credits Prerequisite : PY 611, 612, 711 A study of principles and methodology of experimental designs, emphasis is on experimentation both in the laboratory and in the field, either in the country or outside the country.

9 PY786 Quality of Work Life : Establishment and Design of Program 3 credits A study of theories and research relating to quality of life at work, application of knowledge in health, safety at work, environment and working motivation. Educating the managers and employees to enable them to be aware of sickness and problems caused by working, developing physical and mental heath of employees. PY787 Seminar in Industrial and Organizational Psychology Experiences 3 credits Seminar on experiences and technical knowledge concerning the administration of organizations; systems of work; problems and resolutions (Thai and foreign experiences) A short visit and training abroad is included. Individual Research PY791 Individual Research I 3 credits Prerequisite : PY 711 Integration of approaches and theories as well as research findings in industrial and organization psychology to set up hypothesis, research design and instrumentation. Writing the proposal and propose it to the committee. PY792 Individual Research II 3 credits Prerequisite : PY 791 or consent of the instructor Constructing and/or developing instrumentation as approved from the Individual Research I. Collecting data, analysis and discussion research results. Thesis PY800 Thesis 12 Credits
