1 TSDS PEIMS Update Sept 10, 2015 What is TSDS? TEA saw the need for an improved PEIMS collection system and a way to share data back to the districts in a more useful format. TEA launched a major statewide initiative funded by Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, federal grants, and state funds for PEIMS improvements. 7 New Terminology Category a grouping of sub categories that are related In legacy PEIMS these are referred to as Record Types. Sub Category a grouping of complex types that are related In legacy PEIMS these are referred to as Records. Complex Type a grouping of one or more data elements that comprise specific information Interchange XML schema definitions which group related complex types These are the files that contain the PEIMS data. Data Element a single unit of data Same as in legacy PEIMS Introduction to TEDS TEDS sections are numbered similarly to the legacy Data Standards with a few additional sections for XML schemas. 9 Applying for TSDS Roles in TEAL When you apply for a new TSDS role, please be sure you enter your district in the Employing Organization field and the Requesting Organization field. There is a new Privileges feature in each TSDS role. Your superintendent has 5 days to approve or deny a request. If it has not been approved or denied in 5 days, the request will expire and you will have to resubmit your request. PEIMS Application Preview 9

10 TSDS Training and Support The following trainings only apply to district PEIMS Coordinators who are implementing the new TSDS PEIMS in : TSDS PEIMS Day 1 Workshop September 28 th 9:00-4:00 Full day training for TSDS adopter district s PEIMS Coordinators TSDS PEIMS Day 2 Workshop September 30 th 9:00-4:00 Full day training for TSDS adopter district s PEIMS Coordinators TSDS PEIMS Workdays We will form small work groups made up of three to four districts each. We will assign each work group a date during the week of November 2 nd to come in for hands-on loading of your district s actual PEIMS data. Remember to have your TEAL TSDS roles approved prior to September 28th. TSDS Future Plans What will happen to PET? Core Collections Growth Potentially 159 other state and federal data collections will be moved from various systems to now be collected through TSDS. Early Childhood Data System (ECDS) was the first of these Core Collections to be integrated into TSDS. We cannot predict what other collections will be moved under the TSDS umbrella or when. 10

11 What can you do now? TSDS PEIMS adopters: Register on ESC 15 s website for September TSDS trainings Request your TSDS roles in TEAL as soon as possible Explain to your superintendent that ESC staff will also be requesting roles soon. We will coordinate a date with your superintendent TSDS PEIMS adopters: No action needed at this time. You will not be able to request TSDS PEIMS roles in TEAL until after this school year. All Districts: ECDS kindergarten submission coming up this fall. PK submission will be in the spring. TAA Letter should be coming out at the end of September announcing the opening of the kindergarten collection. Stay tuned. Questions? 11
