2 JOHNNY ECONOMEDES STC GRADUATES Johnny G. Economedes High School is proud to announce that seventy eight students graduated from South Texas College receiving a Marketable Skills Certificate, Saturday, May 18, More than fifty of students attended the commencement ceremony and it was an exhilarating experience. This wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the counselors, administrators and dual enrollment teachers. At JEHS, we are proud of our students and of what they have accomplished.

6 Computer and Internet Specialists Graduate from STC Career & Technical Education students who completed Computer Maintenance Dual Enrollment and Computer Technician Dual Enrollment classes were awarded the Computer and Internet Specialists Certificate from South Texas College. Each class is a two-hour pre-employment lab that offers students sixteen credit hours at STC. Pictured left to right with instructor Yolanda Cantu are: Jose Martin Cazares EHS, Yolanda Cantu CPMT. 7 Dirt Cups Anyone? and coconut which represent each one of the soil profiles. The soil profile consists of plant, topsoil, subsoil layers, horizons, and the bedrock. Gummy worms are also used to represent the decomposers found throughout the soil! Pictured at left are Edinburg North FFA Students with their soil profile dirt cups! As part of a soils lesson, Mr. Antonio Garza, ENHS Ag teacher, has his agriculture science students make dirt cups. He relates the different layers to different parts of the soil profile and says the activity helps students understand the soils in which they live and build their houses. Whenever you can give students hands-on activities, they learn more and they have a better understanding of the information because they can relate to what they ve done, Mr. Garza says. This lab is fun and inexpensive and it comes together at the end when students use a clear plastic cup and fill it up with chocolate & vanilla pudding, cookies, whipped topping (cont d) Freshman Orientation at ENHS ECISD 8 th graders who are scheduled to attend ENHS beginning in the school were invited to tour the campus this past month. 8 Edinburg High School Emergency Telecommunications Certificates - Working to Save Lives Edinburg High School Law Enforcement II students, under the direction of Mr. Toby Gonzales, took the Emergency Telecommunication Certification exam. Ninety percent of the students who took the exam passed it. Why the need for the Emergency Telecommunications Certificate? Prior to the existence of a 911 Emergency Dispatch system, how did police, fire, and hospitals respond to emergencies? Citizens dialed the operator, but telephone operators had no training. Callers were sometimes transferred to the wrong towns, or worse, callers couldn't find the correct local emergency number. Since 1968, when the first 911 call was made, the usefulness of the emergency dispatcher system both nationally and locally has shown to be indispensable and has saved countless lives. In the United States, call centers receive at least half a million 911 calls per year. Aside from handling the volume, how do dispatchers know whom to contact, how to contact, or if they should escalate the response to a higher level, such as contacting police, fire, or medical responders? The answer is simple. A 911 dispatcher knows whom to contact, how to remain calm, and when to take the call to the next level because of training. You can learn the skills and techniques necessary to help save lives in our Emergency TeleCommunicator (911) program. (from Portland Community College)

9 EHS Prof Com Invites Speakers Mrs. Requenez, Edinburg High School Professional Communications teacher, teamed up with the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council Division to bring in the following presenters: (left to right) Hector Chaparral, Rogelio Martinez & Orlando Niño. Mrs. Requenez invited Law Enforcement, Health Science, and her Communication classes to attend the presentation JEHS Robotic Competition Economedes High School sent four teams to UTPA to compete in a robotics competition with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) - UTPA. The first four teams that placed moved on to compete at the University of Texas - San Antonio. One of the Economedes Teams placed fourth locally and third in state.

10 Edinburg North FFA Officer Team The newly elected Edinburg Officer Team has been hard at work! They have attended the Rio Grande Valley District Convention and Banquet, and the Area X FFA Association Convention in Kingsville! This newly elected team took part as voting delegates at aforementioned events and learned how the election process works at the two different levels. They are looking forward to a great upcoming school year! The officer team was formally inducted at the annual end of the year banquet in which over $15,000 dollars in scholarships were awarded to Edinburg North FFA graduating seniors as well! 11 Edinburg High School Recycling Program In October of 2012, the Interact Club, sponsored by Career and Technical Education teacher, Ms. Danielle McCarver and Mr. Joseph Prince, AP Physics Teacher, took on the daunting task of integrating a recycling program into their club. The Interact Club took on the challenge to provide the recycling service to the 120 Edinburg High School classrooms. Students became aware of the amount of paper being thrown into trashcans instead of being recycled and saw that this was a worthy cause. Throughout the school year, the Interact Club members made over 100 recycling boxes and placed them in classrooms throughout the campus. Dedicated students sorted through these boxes during their lunch periods to discard items that were not actually recyclables, such as the occasional piece of gum. Countless students need to be thanked for their tireless efforts of placing even the smallest piece of paper in a recycling box. A special recognition needs to be given to the following students: Ricardo Arce, Mario Garcia, Mario Lopez, Itzel Limas and Ida Ramirez. These students volunteered to stuff mounds of paper in their vehicles and deliver it to the City of Edinburg Recycling Center. Without the dedication of wonderful students we would not have been able to recycle paper at Edinburg High School. An additional recognition goes to all the teachers at Edinburg High School who diligently reminded their students to recycle instead of discarding paper in the trash can. Thanks to the efforts of students and faculty at Edinburg High School, the Interact Club, was able to make a small difference for our community. A special thanks to Mario Garcia, Itzel Limas & Mario Lopez for the many trips they made to the Edinburg Recycling Center.

13 Pharmacy Technician Assistant Certification Preparation The Practicum in Health Science Technology students are preparing medication in their Nonsterile Compounding labs. Audry Solis (ENHS) is weighing a capsule she prepared to determine if it contains the correct amount of medication. In the background Virginia Macias (ENHS) is working on the Pass Assured Computer Program to review 200 different drugs they need to learn for the PTCB Certification Exam. Virginia Macias (ENHS) is preparing medication for compounding by filing capsules in her Practicum for Health Science Technology- Pharmacy Technician. In the Practicum in Health Science Technology-Pharmacy Technician class, Rene Trevino (EHS) and Marian Anabila (ENHS) are weighing the powder that they prepared by grinding the tablets in the mortar and pestle and will incorporate this powder into a base to prepare a medicated ointment.

14 AV Production - State SkillsUSA Produces Winners! At the SkillsUSA State competition, Audio Video Production student Gilbert Cavazos, RVHS sophomore, (back row left) received Silver in TV Camera Operator Technical Information Test and Cameron Martin, RVHS senior, ( back center) received Bronze in TV Camera Operator Technical Information Test. Audio Video Production student Josh Palacios, EHS senior, (far right) placed in both the TV Production Technical Information Test and the TV Camera Operator Technical Information Test at the SkillsUSA State competition. Josh received the Silver in TV Camera Operator and Bronze in TV Production. Channel 5 Showcase Winners Audio Video Production students Erielle Gonzalez (sophomore RVHS) and Sergio Lopez (junior RVHS) won the KRGV Showcase for April. Showcase is an opportunity for media students and school district television staff from across the Rio Grande Valley to showcase the best happenings of their school and school districts. Each month during the school year, one video is selected from the videos receiving the most votes and the high school media program with the winning video receives a $1,000 grant.

15 Mr. Perez EMT Instructor Artemio Perez, EMT Dual Enrollment instructor, enables high school seniors an opportunity to earn 16 credit hours at STC through the Health Science Practicum EMT Dual Enrollment course. Mr. Perez is pictured giving a lesson on the heart. The two top pictures and the middle one have to do with anatomy of a sheep heart. The objective is to have the health science students identify vessels, chambers, and valves of a sheep heart using labels. The bottom left hand corner picture shows the high school students learning how deoxygenated and oxygenated blood circulate through the heart using red and blue yarn. The picture located at the bottom right hand corner depicts EMT's learning how to use an AED machine with CPR assistance. 16 Edinburg High School FFA seniors culminated their FFA high school careers by applying for the FFA Booster Club Scholarships. The students filled out lengthy scholarship applications and went through a battery of interview question before a panel of judges. The students were evaluated on FFA participation, community service, future plans, and other relevant information related to their experiences in FFA. Recipient of the Gold Award was Daniella Rodriguez (back row far right), the Silver Award was earned by Bianca Martinez (bottom row far right) and Michael Moreno (back row- center). The Bronze Award went to Celeste Martinez and Annalyssa Casarez (front row- left and center) and Michelle Rodriguez (back row far left) Each of the FFA Scholarship candidates was awarded over a $1,000. Funds for the scholarships were raised by the FFA Booster Club members. EHS seniors, Michelle Rodriguez and Bianca Martinez sport their Tech Prep Texas Scholar cord and FFA sash. 17 RVHS sophomore/freshmen HOSA students took a Medical Field Trip to the UT-Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC). In addition to visiting the RAHC, the students also toured the ER & Laboratory departments at Valley Baptist Hospital. Pictured with the RVHS HOSA students is Dr. Adela Valdez, Assistant Regional Dean for Medical Education. Dr. Valdez presented a simulation lab which introduced the students to various signs & symptoms health care workers look for in patients who are suffering from either cardiac or respiratory distress. Andrew Castellano listens for heart murmurs as part of the cardiac simulation. Leonel Vela, MD, MPH, Regional Dean & Professor, welcomes Robert Vela HOSA to the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC). Students also participated with a hands-on activity involving the dissection of a cow's eye. Students were able to locate and identify the optic nerve, cornea, lens, retina, and other structures of the eye. Alexandra Trevino feels for cardiac fluttering which is characteristic of patients suffering from coronary conditions.

18 HOSA Beautifies Edinburg High School HOSA students participated in the EHS Bobcat Beautification Project held from 8am to 1pm on Saturday, May 18, The project include trimming the trees with blocks, adding mulch and pruning the branches from all of the trees in the center courtyard of the EHS campus. Mrs. De Leon, HOSA sponsor, states that it's always a great way for students to collaborate their efforts, work together on campus projects and take pride in the accomplishments that will flourish for the entire EHS student body. Construction Trades Creates Jaguar Plaque Career and Technical Education Construction Trades class created a commemorative Economedes Jaguar plaque for JEHS Principal, Dr. Anthony Garza. Students from Mr. Jose Rodriguez s Construction Technology presented Dr. Garza with the eye-catching board. The board was made using ShopBot technology. 20 The Edinburg High School FFA Booster Club held its annual FFA Booster Club Banquet on May 6 th in the EHS Café. FFA officers conducted the meeting, introducing each officer and the responsibilities that each office holds. The FFA members then showed a student-created video hi-lighting the FFA events for the year. Scholarships were also awarded to outstanding seniors. The officers were installed and the retiring officers handed over their positions to the new officers. The retiring officers then removed their jackets as a symbol that their term is over. 21 The Art of Pizza Making! ENHS Principles of Health Science Student Project Presentations Students in Ms. Janie Rangel's 8th period Principles of Health Science class are shown with presentations on the health occupation profession they are looking to choose as their future career. Students in the EHS Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness classes, under the instruction of Leticia Saenz, learned about sources of fat and protein. Pizzas were made the old fashioned way, with natural ingredients and no preservatives. Students have anticipated this lab since the beginning of the semester. Measuring accurately and using scientific methods was instrumental in creating these delectable pizzas. The foods lab smelled like an Italian pizzeria. In addition to the traditional pizzas, the students also made fruit pizzas. Not only were they delicious, they were nutritious too. Students made a homemade crust, baked it, topped with cream cheese infused with raw sugar and tangy lemon zest. Toppings consisted of foods high in antioxidants, vitamins and natural sweetness. 22 JEHS Robotics Competitors Place at State! ECISD is proud to announce that Johnny Economedes High School Students participated in the 1 st Annual SHPE Robotics Competition on Saturday April 6, 2013, at UTPA. There were 14 teams from the valley competing and Johnny Economedes High School had four teams competing. They were sponsored by Mrs. Carla Lopez. Mrs. Ana Hernandez team placed 6 th, Mr. Felix Ochoa s team placed 5 th and Mrs. Maria Carmen Salinas team placed 4 th. Only teams that placed 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th advanced to State competition at the University of Texas-San Antonio on Saturday April 20, This was the 1st time The University of Texas-Pan American & Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers (SHPE) Robotics Competition. It s a Design Competition that will be promoting STEM Fields to the Young Generations! The LEGO Mindstorm Robot Kit is what was used. EHS FIRST Robotics Receives Grant! Mrs. Maria Carmen Salinas team placed 3 rd at the State competition. American Electric Power Texas awarded at total of $30,000 to five valley high schools. Edinburg High School received $6,000 of the grant money as part of its AEP FIRST program. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics program challenges students to build a robot to accomplish certain tasks in competitive events at regional and international levels. The purpose of the grant is to entice learning in math and science.

FFA members submitted two Lonestar Degrees and one National Chapter Award at the Area X Advanced Degree Check. Good luck Economedes FFA members at the State and National levels this summer. The Edinburg Economedes FFA Chapter banquet was held on 5/9/13. Members were recognized for outstanding participation during the school year. 24 Volunteerism Begins at Early Age Career & Technical Education students are always encouraged to volunteer in the community. Volunteerism builds character. Some begin as early as ninth grade, but an exceptional young lady is beginning in 4 th grade. CTE is looking forward to the day that she will join the organization when she s in high school. Anastacia Hidalgo, a fourth grader at De Escandon Elementary and her mother, Lourdes Hidalgo visited the Children s Center at Renaissance in Edinburg to hand out dozens of toys, games and stuffed animals to the children on the fourth floor who were in the hospital for a variety of health reasons. The 11-year old gathered these toys from friends, family and members of the Christian Fellowship Church in McAllen, who attended Anastacia s birthday party. The toy drive birthday party was all Anastacia s idea and she wanted to promote it during her party rather than receive gifts for herself.she started crying, Anastacia said. Hidalgo s tears were that of gratitude that her daughter would be so thoughtful and open-hearted. I don t know too many kids who are thinking like her, the 28-year-old mother said. I read books and stuff, and I ve always wanted to donate, but Mom told me (I was) too young. She wanted me to understand before I do, Anastacia said. I read this story about this boy, I think his name was Zach Bonner, she said. He was walking around and he walked on his feet, like, 2,000 miles just to collect money for kids. He collected about $32,000. Recently, Anastacia visited Estella s House to donate more of her toys. The nonprofit organization, in partnership with the Children s Advocacy Center of Hidalgo County, helps children who are victims of child abuse by giving them a safe environment in which to tell their story. The group then gives each child a toy afterward, so they re always in need of donated toys. The whole experience has already prompted the 11-year-old to plan her next philanthropic act. I haven t told my mom, but I want to give shoes and dog food, she said. Anastacia wants to collect shoes to give to children in need in Mexico and Guatemala, and dog food for the Palm Valley Animal Shelter. Aside from her new goals to raise money and give back, the fourth grader is also hoping she inspires other children to do the same. Students Learn History of Scones EHS Lifetime Nutrition & Wellness students made homemade scones while learning the history of the Scottish QUICK BREAD. It is said to have taken its name from the Stone of Destiny (or Scone), the place where Scottish kings were once crowned. The original triangular-shaped scone was made with oats and griddle-baked. Today's versions are more often flour-based and baked in the oven. They come in various shapes including triangles, rounds, squares and diamonds. Scones can be savory or sweet and are usually eaten for breakfast or tea. According to Webster's College dictionary Scones originated in Scotland between

25 RVHS HOSA YEAR-END CELEBRATION Robert Vela's HOSA End of Year Splash Bash celebration was held at Fountain Pool on Sunday, May 26th. It was a time to gather as a group and recognize the great accomplishments our First HOSA Organization had throughout the school year. Starting with an initial enrollment of well over 100+ members, HOSA hit the road running with various community service events, fund raisers, & educational tours to the University of Tx-Health Science Center in San Antonio & the Regional Academic Health Center/Valley Baptist Medical Hospital in Harlingen. In addition, ECISD & Robert Vela HS were well represented in the Area, State, & National rounds of our annual Area 7 HOSA Competitions. We commend all our competitors who participated and gave of their time to prepare for those competitive events. We wish Mr. Andrew Castellano to best of luck as he continues to prepare for Nationals this summer in Nashville, Tn. TEAMING UP! Edinburg High School Principles of Construction teacher Joe Rodriguez and Ag teacher Arturo J. Ponce teamed up together to demonstrate table saw safe use. Whereas the construction students are more familiar with the saw usage, the Principles of Ag students are introduced to it towards the end of the semester. Students from both classes benefitted from the combined lesson.

26 Teaming Up for Arbor Day! Mrs. Eva Hernandez, her EHS Floral Design class and Mr/ James Hernandez and his Game Design class joined powers to volunteer at the Edinburg World Birding Center (EWBC). The two groups helped plant trees and plants for the City of Edinburg's Earth Day/Arbor Day Event on Saturday, April 27th. Planting occurred at the center's bridge area located between the canal and North Pond, along with City Forester Ed Kuprel and the Forestry Partners. The city helped in fixing the bridge area since much of it was eroding away and was close to falling over. They created a slope which goes down into the North Pond, and Marisa Oliva (EWBC Manager) is working on designing an overlook which will be placed there that will include pathways aimed at giving students the opportunity to test the waters or allow for some good birding. This newly planted area around the bridge will create more habitat for the waterfowl in the area but also to keep visitors on the designated pathways and overlook. 27 Farewell to ENHS HOSA Officers The ENHS HOSA chapter 7829 had a very successful year. On Friday May 24, 2013, ENHS HOSA had thier annual award and recognition ceremony. Career & Technical Education teachers, Pat Ramirez and Susan Smith, were recognized before their peers at an EHS staff breakfast for 35 years of service to ECISD. Mrs. Ramirez is the CTE Cosmetology teacher and Mrs. Smith teaches Dual Enrollment AV Production classes. Both have had successful teaching careers that have included SkillsUSA National Award winning students, as well as students receiving licensures in Cosmetology and a former student winning an Emmy in Film Editing for the Amazing Race. 28 Brendaly Naranjo BPA National Winner! Brendaly Naranjo, a junior at JEHS, won second place in the nation in the Business Professionals of America Virtual Media Individual Contest. Brendaly is in the Advanced Audio Video Production class and the Audio Video Production BPA chapter. Brendaly's Virtual Media entry was about the use of electronic readers and how electronic readers can be used in education and classrooms. The BPA National Leadership Conference was in Orlando Florida on May 7-11, 2013.

29 JEHS Student Places at State! Congratulations to Myra Ramirez from JEHS who placed 3rd for Graphic Design in the Texas Media Awards through the Computer Maintenance Program. Myra s instructor is Yolanda Cantu. Pharmacy Technicians STC Culinary Arts Visits Career Center The Health Science Technology Practicum - Pharmacy Technician students (left-right) Kaelyn Anzaldua (EHS), Xiomara Lopez (RVHS) and Cassandra Garcia(EHS) are compounding a medicated ointment similar to the Aspercreme is compounded. Students must measure and weigh all ingredients in the compound. The hands-on experience gives students an insight in the daily life of a pharmacist. Instructor for the Pharmacy Technician class is Jo Beth Trevino. STC students in the Culinary Arts program visited the Career Center Culinary Art classes which are under the direction of Esperanza Espinoza. The purpose of the visit was to inform students of the requirements in the Culinary Arts program at STC. In addition, the STC students talked about Culinary Arts careers and the various class requirements at STC, such as baking, garnishing, ServSafe, and the cost of the program. To conclude the visit, the STC Culinary Arts students demonstrated various methods of garnishing various fruits, which the ECISD students found to be most interesting. 30 Edinburg High School HOSA A Year in Review Once again, Edinburg High School HOSA has created another successful year and we would like to thank the entire staff at EHS who helped us succeed. This had been eventful and productive year with all of our students. For some of our students, it was the first time competing and participating with our club and for our seniors, it is the last time they will be able to bond and connect with fellow Bobcats and chapter advisors Lisa De Leon and Debra Jauregui. Many memories and friendships were created. Most of these memories were created among HOSA students through the various competitions and community service projects. Along with the memories, HOSA left returning students with the desire and need to surpass themselves this coming year. As we conclude the school years, we would like to thank all our students, officers, and members. We could not have achieved the status we are at now without you. To the graduating class of 2013: Good luck in all that you pursue and always know that your hard work will pay off in the future. 31 Plaques & More in Construction Trades CTE Scores High on ECISD Safety Report Career and Technical Education Construction Trades twohour pre-employment classes held off-campus are able to create various school logos using high-tech machinery. Students enrolling in Construction Trades are also able to create tables, desks, cabinets, etc. In addition, the math skills are enhanced. The Construction Trades motto is: Measure twice, cut once! Arminda Lozano, CTE Director, received a token of appreciation for being an Accident Free Campus from the Safety and Risk Department for the months of January through May. The award is especially significant since the CTE preemployment labs utilize industry standard equipment which require a higher standard of safety. Kudos to the CTE Department!
