The dermal papilla is the part of the follicle containing blood and nerves that feeds the growing hair. If the papilla and the regenerative cells surrounding the hair are destroyed, the hair will die. When the probe is in place, the application of a low-level electrical current destroys the papilla and the surrounding cells, loosening the hair from the follicle.
