Every day we had a different activity at Recess 1. These activities included a Fingerspelling Competition, Deaf Trivia, Deaf Sports and Hand Artwork. 2 PRINCIPAL S NEWS In our previous newsletter we highlighted our Sports Awards Evening and the many students who were recognised at that event. In this newsletter it is the turn of students who received acknowledgement for academic, cultural and service achievements at our Awards Ceremony on 24 October. Although a number of our major events have now concluded for the year, we still have much to look forward to, not least of which is the forthcoming Junior Arts Journey on 27 and 28 November and the Year 12 Graduation Evening on 16 November. Year 12s have now completed all assessment and we wish them a very happy final week of school as they approach the end of their secondary education experience AUTISM HUB AND READING CENTRE The Autism Hub is an initiative of the Department of Education and Training (DET). It offers a range of services to support schools and families to improve the educational outcomes of students with Autism. Our Integrated Student Support Department accesses the Autism Hub as an additional support for our students diagnosed with ASD. If you are a parent of a child with Autism, I would like to let you know that this service also extends to parents. The aim of the Autism Hub is to support the needs of school leaders, teachers, parents and caregivers through a state-wide, cross-sector advisory model. The Autism Hub builds the capability and confidence of school leaders, teachers and parents to improve the engagement and educational achievement of students with Autism. Below you will find an example of this, whereby English teacher, Melanie Ralph, aligned a learning experience with an identified need in order to engage her Year 11 English Communication class in providing a much needed community service whilst at the same time developing a range of communication skills. I m sure you will enjoy reading Melanie s article. Lois O Reilly Principal The Year 11 English Communication class would like to thank all Indro students and teachers who supported their recent homelessness donation campaign. The campaign was a huge success, with over $1000 in food and clothing donation items raised for the Brisbane Youth Service Centre in Fortitude Valley. After designing creative and informative posters and getting the message out, we were really excited to see the donation buckets in the library fill up! It was amazing to have Angelique from the Centre come to the class to collect the items and speak with the class about what role the Centre plays in many young peoples' lives. She commended the class for all of their effort in making the project such a success. We hope to run the project again next year and will continue to spread awareness about homelessness in Australia Melanie Ralph English Teacher Angelique from the Brisbane Youth Service Centre talks to the class about the Brisbane Youth Service Centre. FINANCE NEWS LAPTOP LOCKERS In preparation for the 2018 school year we will be invoicing for locker hire within the next month. The school has also purchased new combination padlocks for our laptop lockers and we would like to exchange them for the old ones at the same time. If you are in Years 10 and 11 and wish to continue hiring a laptop locker please come to Administration during the week 13 November 17 November with your old padlock and we will exchange it for the combination padlock. For Years 7, 8 and 9, the same process will be followed but these returns will be the week 27 November 1 December. If you do not wish to hire a Laptop locker in 2018 then please just return the old padlock and we will organise a refund of the security deposit to the student account to be used against future school fees or activities STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME AND SUBJECT LEVIES Within the next 2 weeks you will receive invoices for 2018 school fees and I wanted to draw to your attention the Department of Education and Training s preferred payment method of BPoint. The details for this are on the bottom left -hand side of each invoice. The school is very happy to put in place payment plans for those who wish to pay this off throughout the year to assist with your family budgets. Please contact me to discuss on Some students have credits (refunds) available to be used for these fees and to access them all you need to do is me rforb2@eq.edu.au with the relevant invoice you would like this applied against and pay the difference. 3 FAREWELL TO YEAR 12 FROM THE WHOLE STUDENT BODY What a wonderful farewell the entire student cohort gave to our Year 12s last Wednesday, November 1, at their final whole school assembly before they went on exam timetable. Our enthusiastic Year 7s lined the internal road and path as the Year 12s made their way from The Peter Doherty Theatre to the Assembly Hall where they were greeted by Years 8-11 and by our new 2018 senior leaders on stage. Other key staff members also present on stage to welcome them and to say goodbye were Mrs Lois O Reilly, Principal; Mrs Maja Bogicevic, Deputy Principal Year 12; Ms Monica Wood, Year 12 Coordinator and Ms Kate Gamgee, Year 11 Coordinator. We were also lucky to have with us the Year Coordinators of Years 10 and 11 when our current Year 12s were in Years 10 and 11: Ms Angela Porter and Ms Moneth Montemayor. It was an emotional time for our Year 12s as their happiness and pride in achieving this milestone bubbled over. Maja Popovic, Academic Captain for 2018, spoke on behalf of the student cohort, wishing the 12s all the best; Jeff Jo, Student Representative Council President for 2017, responded on behalf of the Year 12s handing out sage advice to all remaining year levels! Maja led the assembly with three cheers for Year 12s and Jeff responded by leading Year 12s with three cheers for Indooroopilly High. As the Year 12s left the Hall to the strains of You make my dreams come true (Hall and Oates) we knew we would truly miss these wonderful Year 12 students who have contributed so much to our school life this year. 5 SPANISH AND CHINESE SPEECH COMPETITIONS On Sunday 13 August, students from Indooroopilly State High School travelled to Griffith University on the Gold Coast to compete in the Modern Language Teachers Association of Queensland (MLTAQ) Spanish and Chinese Speech Competitions. Many other languages, including Japanese, French, German and Italian, were also represented at the Speech Competition. Students prepared and memorised their speech in either Spanish or Chinese, and then delivered their prepared speech in front of a Judge. Students were also asked questions at the conclusion of their speeches to truly showcase and demonstrate their language proficiency. The difficulty and content of the speeches varied depending on the year level, from speaking about where they lived, members of their family, their interests and activities to environmental and global issues. Students were marked on their speech content, presentation and their language skills. Our students performed incredibly well on the day, receiving a total of four 1 st place, four 2 nd place and two 3 rd place finishes, as well as six students who received Highly Commended. All students who participated in this speech contest have worked extremely hard and should be commended for their outstanding performance on the day. They did a remarkable job of representing Indooroopilly State High School and made their teachers and parents very proud. Congratulations to all the students who participated! 6 SPORTS REPORT Indro Ice Hockey Star Ice Hockey doesn t get much attention in Australia but at Indooroopilly High, we have one Year 7 student in particular who spends a lot of time on the ice. Patrick Ivens started playing as a 5 year old in Canada and has continued in the sport since arriving in Australia, playing for the Brisbane Buccaneers out at Boondall for the past three years. His talent as a goal keeper has been recognised with Patrick being selected this year in both the Under 13 and Under 15 Queensland teams that competed at the National Ice Hockey Championships in Perth and Melbourne respectively. It is a big commitment training three times a week in the lead up to Nationals, regular camps and competitions on top of the weekly club Competition but Patrick loves the speed and uniqueness of the game. To recognise Patrick s achievements in Ice Hockey, he will be awarded a Gold Sports Award on assembly. Congratulations Patrick and we look forward to hearing of your future endeavours. Carina selected in the Australian team Another high achieving student at Indooroopilly State High School is Year 12 student Carina Hagarty. We heard about Carina s success at a state and national level in Trampolining at our recent Sports Awards Night, but more recently it was announced that Carina has been selected in the Australian team by Gymnastics Australia and the Trampoline Gymnastics Selection Committee to compete at the 25 th FIG Gymnastics World Age Group Competitions for Individual and Synchronised Trampoline and Double Mini Trampoline. Carina will be heading to Bulgaria when other Year 12 students are celebrating their last week of secondary education. Congratulations, Carina, on another fabulous achievement and we wish you all the best at Worlds! Goal Ball All Star If you have ever watched the Paralympic games, you would know that there is a whole range of fantastic sports and athletes who don t get the media coverage they deserve. One of those sports is Goal Ball. Played by athletes who are blind or visually impaired, athletes all wear opaque eyeshades (black-out goggles) at all times to ensure a fair competition. The object of the game is to throw a ball past the opponents and into their net to score points. Players stay on their hands and knees to defend their net and score against their opponents. Bells inside the ball help to orientate the players by indicating the direction of the oncoming ball, so the game is played in complete silence to allow players to concentrate and respond to the ball. Year 11 student, Joe Hogg, is an enthusiastic and talented goal ball athlete and recently competed with the South Australian Youth Team at the 37 th Australian Goal Ball Championships. Joe had a great time finishing the entire tournament undefeated and claiming the gold 15-5 over Victoria. On top of this, Joe was named in the All Star 6 the top 6 players in the division for the tournament. A fantastic achievement. Congratulations Joe!! Jeremy Anderson Sports Coordinator 6

7 SENIOR ARTS JOURNEY As the school year draws to a close, we bring together our school s most outstanding work via the annual Senior Arts Journey. Always an emotional time as we reflect upon how initial ideas, through organisation and sheer hard work, turn into beautifully resolved works; but then also thinking about where to next and the time ahead. It goes without saying that these events, strongly anticipated on the school calendar, are bitter sweet in that they draw the year to a close, but also celebrate the creative success of our students. The night was a memorable showcase of the students work hosted at Metro Arts in the city. Unmarred by the insufferable heat, four flights of stairs and impending storm, the volunteer students and staff pushed on with the support of many cold beverages, to put an exhibition together in under four hours in the Warehouse. It unfurled at 6.00pm with the support of Beth Foad on guitar, into an hour long intense experience of art chat and wonderment. The exhibition was so full at one point it was difficult to move from one work to the next without damaging someone s vintage chambray with the mascarpone and blue cheese stuffed Medjools. The students were buzzing and the industry representatives, Sam Cranstoun and Indro Alumnus Andy Bates, were most impressed with the calibre of our young people s art. They compared and contrasted their own experiences in high school and the types of works they produced to that of our Indro students, maintaining the difficulty in choosing just one Industry award recipient. Instigated by a heart-warming video recording sent all the way from California by Indro Alumnus Sara Fonseca, former Arts Captain and Dux of the school in 2006, she left us with three gems. Sara reminded us all to keep being creative, not be too harsh on ourselves and to network and make lots of arty friends. Then we were affronted by the skill and talent of the film students through the very first video. One hour and twenty minutes later the film industry and media educator representatives; Dr Peter Moyes, Meg Thomas and Derek Weeks met to discuss which of the twenty works should be acknowledged for their outstanding use of film technique. Through the ensuing presentations we saw quite an array of students awarded for their efforts. 9 SENIOR ARTS JOURNEY (Cont d) The event itself was two months in the making and I d like to publically acknowledge and thank the staff, students and parents who were involved in its creation: Sofia Spiliotopoulos in the office for her assistance; Industrial Technology staff for their last minute structural assistance; the P&C Association for the refreshments; Elsie for her enthusiasm and doing the leg work when we just couldn t do any more; Harry Hurwood, Zac Perry, Mia Valencia, Natalia Gallardo, Lukas Schilling and Aina Betts for running the show; Ryanna Clayton for rounding up sponsorship; Matthew Beattie as special guest liaison; Rhys Cassidy and Moneth Montemayor for producing the high quality film showreel; Noel Herberg for catering and curating, pack down and clean up; and Daniella Capelo for being highly organised and driven in promotions, catering, curating, pack down and clean up. It is such an honour to work within A community of forward thinkers that values our school s diversity and creativity by drawing together outstanding student work for a truly appreciative public audience. For further information contact IB Coordinator Peter Day on pday4@eq.edu.au or (07) CISCO NETWORKING ACADEMY PROGRAM The Networking Academy Program is a two year course offered by Indooroopilly State High School in conjunction with Cisco Systems, a world leading manufacturer of networking equipment. What do Students Learn? Students learn to construct and configure Local and Wide Area Networks (LANs and WANs) using state of the art equipment. LANs and WANs interconnecting our computing equipment and the entire global internet. A student who has successfully completed the course and attained certification will be able to build, maintain and interconnect computer networks. The student will be able to configure networking equipment such as routers and switches which direct and manage network data. AVIATION STUDIES The sky s the limit New Recreational Pilot Licence half the price of Private Pilot Licence Aviation Studies is a subject for students who are looking forward to either a career in aviation or flying for pleasure. Students are able to enrol in Aviation Studies Years 10, 11 and 12. Students go to a flying school at Archerfield Airport each week during the year. Initially students work towards performing their first solo and must be 15 years of age to do so. Students work towards a Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) and then, after successfully completing navigation flights, gain a Private Pilot Licence. Students will be required to pay their chosen flying school each week for their lesson. This is a pay-as-you-go arrangement with the hire rate of an aircraft and instructor plus landing fees meaning that each flying week costs between $300 and $400. The total cost to attain solo flight is estimated to be $6000, with a further $5000 to Recreational Pilot Licence with the total cost of a Private Pilot Licence being roughly $21,000. The theory, comprising Flight Radio Operator s Licence (FROL), Basic Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK) and Private Pilot Licence Theory (PPL), is studied during weekly class time and study at home. Topics include: aircraft familiarisation, aviation terminology, communications, aircraft general knowledge and control, rules and procedures of flight, theory of flight, meteorology and navigation. Students also practise flights in the school s flight simulator during these lessons. It is preferable for students to complete the aviation medical and apply for an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) and student pilot license before commencing flight training, as the first solo flight is not permitted until the documentation has been processed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
