FASHION REVOLUTION DAY #INSIDEOUT AT SCHOOL 01 #insideout at school DO SOMETHING

FASHION REVOLUTION DAY #INSIDEOUT AT SCHOOL 02 Fashion Revolution Day At school On 24th April 2013, 1133 people were killed and over 2500 were injured when the Rana Plaza factory complex collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Catastrophes in our fashion supply chains continue. Fashion Revolution Day says enough is enough. This annual appointment on the anniversary of the disaster will help to raise awareness of the true cost of fashion, show the world that change is possible, and celebrate all those involved in creating a more sustainable future for fashion. The theme of the first Fashion Revolution Day is Who Made Your Clothes (and no we don t just mean which brand...we mean who? literally!) Imagine the thread from the garment, to the machinist who sewed it, all the way down to the farmer who grew the cotton. We ve come up with a few ways that children of all ages can have fun participating in Fashion Revolution Day at school while at the same time learning more about the clothes they wear.

They have thought about the people who made their clothes and drawn a picture asking the brand to answer, Lesson suggestion Ask why are we wearing our clothes inside out? Where do you think your clothes come from? Ask the children to draw a picture of their item of clothing Where were your clothes made? Ask the children to look at the label on their item of clothing - which country was it made in? This could be interactive, with the children moving around the classroom into groups based on where their clothing is from. As a group, or individually, ask the children to find these countries on the map See which countries come up most frequently What are your clothes made from? Ask the children to look at their labels again - what fabrics are the clothes made from? This could be interactive, with the children moving around the classroom into groups based on what their clothing is made from. See which is the most common fabric Are the fabrics man-made or natural? What raw materials are they made from? The people involved in making your clothing Ask the children to think about the clothes they are wearing, who do they think might have made them? Can you imagine what their life might be like? Perhaps read a case study to them See Other resources page Tell us about your experience #WhoMadeYourClothes #InsideOut

FASHION REVOLUTION DAY #INSIDEOUT AT SCHOOL 07 Draw a picture Name: Age: Draw a picture of a piece of clothing that you are wearing: I like this piece of clothing because: My piece of clothing was made in this country: My piece of clothing is made from this fabric: Why would you like to know Who Made Your Clothes?

FASHION REVOLUTION DAY #INSIDEOUT AT SCHOOL 08 KS3/4 Teacher notes Age group KS3/4 Time minutes Materials Computers with internet access Worksheet: Write to tbe brand Aim of lesson The students have identified where their clothes were made and have made initial investigations into the environmental and social policies of brands. The students have discussed ideas and problems with their peers, and formed opinions. They have written, with audience and purpose in mind, to a brand to them to ask Who made your clothes? Lesson suggestion Ask why are we wearing our clothes inside out? Where do you think your clothes come from? Ask the students to look at the label on their item of clothing - which country was it made in and from which material? Ask the students to find the brand who made it Ask the students to look online to find out if the brand publishes information about their social and environmental policies In groups Discussion about the importance of knowing how your clothes are made, and the about who should hold responsibility for knowing Discussion about what the difficulties might be in knowing who made your clothes Discussion about the questions the students would like the brands to answer Letter writing Individually or in groups, ask the students to write a letter, or postcard to the brand that made their clothes, including their own questions. These can be sent to the brand The people involved in making your clothing Ask the children to think about the clothes they are wearing, who do they think might have made them? Can you imagine what their life might be like? Perhaps read a case study to them See Other resources page Tell us about your experience #WhoMadeYourClothes #InsideOut

FASHION REVOLUTION DAY #INSIDEOUT AT SCHOOL 09 Write to the brand Use these ideas to write your own letter, , or postcode to the brand or company who made your garment and ask them if they can tell you more about the story behind it. You could also include a photo or drawing of your garment. Look at an item of clothing you are wearing today, which country was it made in and from which material? Which brand or company does your garment come from? Can you find out if this brand or company has a social or environmental policy about how it makes its clothes? You may be able to find this information on their website. Discuss in groups why it might be important to know more about how your clothes were made. Think about the people involved and about the impacts on the environment. Discuss in groups who you think is responsible for thinking about these impacts? Is it the brand, the person who buys the clothing, or someone else? In your groups discuss what you would like to ask the brand or company about how it made your clothes. Some example questions might be: Who sewed my garment? How do you ensure that the workers are treated fairly in the factories you use? Do you know where the fabric is made? How do you ensure the environment has not been harmed in the making of this garment?
