2 Conestoga College ITAL Bachelor s Degree 1: Program Abstract Summary of Program Outcomes, Graduate Employment Opportunities, Opportunities for Further Study Conestoga s Architecture Project & Facility Management (APFM) program is a unique program that educates and trains graduates in the design and management of projects and facilities within the built environment. Integrating the issues of design, project management, maintenance and management of the built environment, the program offers a detailed study of the principles, methods and applications for technically and financially-sound decision making. Graduates will have a particular understanding of concept, development, occupancy and management issues as interrelated considerations in the creation of responsive and responsible architectural projects. Graduates are prepared to manage projects and facilities to meet the needs of the occupants and owners with respect to the present and the future use of the facilities. Studio courses, lecture courses and co-operative work terms expose students to real-life project scenarios and the challenges of managing and balancing the sometimes competing interests of various stakeholders/contributors including owners, consultants, contractors, regulatory bodies, funding agencies, and occupants. This approach develops graduates who are able to interact with a range of project stakeholders to effectively manage projects and facilities through all phases of a building s life cycle. The program approaches the process of design and management as concurrent and intrinsically related considerations. The ability to direct the scope of a project - from initial conception through construction and occupancy into future renovation, addition or change of use is a key attribute of graduates of this program. This program provides an education that leads to recognized and valued professional credentials. The program is accredited by the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Foundation and graduates are eligible to become Certified Facility Managers (CFM) after three years of related work experience and writing the CFM exam. The project management courses prepare students and graduates for credentials with the Project Management Institute (PMI). Students can write the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) exam after completion of Year 2 of the program coursework. The CAPM designation is an entry level certification that requires a demonstration of understanding of the fundamental knowledge, terminology and processes of effective project management. After three years of project management experience, APFM graduates are eligible to apply for Project Management Professional (PMP) designation and write the PMP exam. Program Outcomes Through successful completion of this program, the graduate will have reliably demonstrated the ability to: 1. Demonstrate and apply an understanding of cultural values and architectural theories of function and form in the context of codes, regulations, and their significance to a built environment. 2. Apply and demonstrate the use of methods, materials, specifications, costing and theories of building construction in architectural design and construction, through lab and industrialbased projects. Section 1 Page 1
3 Conestoga College ITAL Bachelor s Degree 3. Demonstrate an understanding of building systems including structural, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, electrical and automation, and work with appropriate persons to creatively implement and coordinate these systems in design, construction, and project and facility management. 4. Collect, process, manage and manipulate empirical and non-empirical research about human factors, environmental forces and technologies, and apply this towards efficient management, maintenance, occupancy change and renovation of built environment in an environmentally conscientious manner. 5. Demonstrate an understanding and application of mandatory functions in the management of architectural and construction projects, such as planning, organizing, staffing, directing, motivating, leading, monitoring, and controlling. 6. Integrate the principles of business administration, architecture and the behavioural and engineering science to cope with and solve the multiple and complex problems and challenges of managing new and existing facilities, renovations and occupancy changes. 7. Communicate effectively and persuasively through oral, graphic, print and computer media in the preparation of reports, specifications, presentation and working documents, threedimensional models and animations. 8. Adhere to professional, ethical and legal codes of practice and comply with industrial, labour and environmental legislation. 9. Apply concepts of human relations and organizational behaviour to establish and maintain effective working teams. 10. Demonstrate leadership skills while working with diverse teams. 11. Understand, value and respect cultural diversity in global, societal, economical, and environmental context. 12. Develop and activate plans for lifelong learning and professional development, and to maintain technological currency. Graduate Employment Opportunities This program provides a solid foundation for employment opportunities in the field of project management, facility management, architecture and construction. Graduates fulfill a comprehensive range of functions including preparing documents, analyzing information, liaising with a range of consultants, clients and stakeholders, and generally managing projects and facilities for the built environment. Job opportunities in this field include working in an architectural or engineering organization, major real estate and facility management companies, large construction companies, industrial plants and corporations, energy companies, management companies, furniture and building product enterprises and various levels of government. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams are essential skills for graduates. The job market has enthusiastically employed graduates of the APFM program and feedback has been excellent, with significant repeat employers both during co-op and upon graduation. The program has matured to the point that there are now graduates who are in the position of hiring for full-time and co-op work term positions and these graduates are actively recruiting from the APFM program. Future employment opportunities are promising with both the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) predicting a growing demand for project and facility managers. Section 1 Page 2
4 Conestoga College ITAL Bachelor s Degree Opportunities for Further Study The APFM program provides a good foundation for graduate studies in a wide variety of subject areas. Graduates have gone on to pursue graduate studies in engineering management, business administration, architecture, and environmental design at institutions that include Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Calgary, Carleton University, Lawrence Technology University and Griffith University. Recently, an upcoming graduate has been accepted into the University of Western Ontario s Master of Environment and Sustainability program for September, Section 1 Page 3
