2 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the Program? The Interior Design 2+2 Program is best explained as a partnership between Northern Arizona University and Maricopa Community Colleges wherein students complete their Associates degree in Interior Design through Maricopa Community Colleges and then apply to transfer to NAU-Scottsdale to complete their Bachelor s degree. Is earning the Associate s Degree required? Yes, our partnership is set up so that students will graduate from both the community college and NAU. Students who have courses from out of state community colleges or other universities may use those credits towards earning the Bachelor s Degree. Glendale Community College (Certificate in Home Furnishings and Materials), Mesa Community College, Phoenix College and Scottsdale Community College are transfer partners for this degree. Can I enroll at the community college and NAU at the same time? Yes, we try to limit concurrent enrollment to one semester. This would occur if you have a few courses left to take at the community college to complete your associate s degree that are not pre-requisites to the NAU courses. Where and how are NAU courses held? All required NAU course work is available on the Scottsdale Community College campus and online; no travel to Flagstaff is required. What are the steps to getting started with NAU? 1. Attend an information session! Please RSVP to one of the session dates listed here: 2. Bring your transcripts to the information session and they will be sent to a member of the Interior Design advising team in Flagstaff for an evaluation to see how your transfer credits will be applied by NAU. The advisor will you a completed checksheet and you can work with them throughout your NAU program. Who do I contact for Financial Aid? Students interested in Financial Aid should apply early. Please contact Joi Grace, Financial Aid Coordinator, at the NAU-North Valley office at: or joi.grace@nau.edu or the main financial aid office in Flagstaff at: or financial.aid@nau.edu Who should I contact for questions about Interior Design Programs at the Community College? Students interested in the Home Furnishings and Materials Certificate, Associates Degree or Advanced Certificate at the community college should contact: Glendale Community College (Certificate): Susan Campbell, Program Director susan.campbell@gccaz.edu or by phone at: Mesa Community College: Sally Kroelinger, Program Director sally.kroelinger@mesacc.edu or by phone at: Phoenix College: Ken Roberts, Program Director ken.roberts@phoenixcollege.edu or by phone at: Scottsdale Community College: Chuck Cooper, Program Director charles.cooper@scottsdalecc.edu or by phone at:

4 PROGRAM INFORMATION NAU s Interior Design program provides a wide range of educational opportunities based on an integrated approach to aesthetic, professional, and academic disciplines. Students complete four studio classes, which are taken sequentially over four semesters. Because most students wish to accomplish this degree in a twoyear period, Studio I always begins in the fall semester. In your junior year you would take Studio I and Studio II. In your senior year, the Studio III and Studio IV classes will be taken. There is no exception or alternative method to completing these courses. To earn this degree, complete at least 120 units of coursework, which we describe in the sections that follow: At least 5 units of liberal studies requirements. Be aware that you may not use courses with an ID prefix to satisfy these liberal studies requirements. At least 76 units of major requirements. Note that PHO courses, ART 100, and ART 101 do not fulfill the requirements of the B.S. Interior Design. Elective courses, if needed, to reach an overall total of at least 120 units Please note that you must complete NAU s diversity requirements by taking two -unit courses, one in U.S. ethnic diversity and one in global diversity awareness. These courses may be used to meet other requirements within your academic plan if you choose them carefully. Also note that NAU requires that at least 0 units of the courses you take for your degree must be upperdivision courses (those numbered 00 and above). You must also earn at least a C in all ID courses. You must have completed all the coursework used to fulfill Interior Design major and core requirements within the last 10 years. PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS The B.S. in Interior Design program meets the educational requirements for membership in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). If you wish to become a member of these professional organizations, you can apply for associate membership after you graduate. The NCIDQ exams are currently the accepted qualifying criteria for professional designers in those states with title registration and/or licensing standards for interior designers. For more information, please visit the NCIDQ website: QUICK REFERENCE WEBSITES American Society of Interior Designers Bureau of Labor Statistics Council for Interior Design Accreditation National Association of Schools of Art and Design
