2 MSU MEDIA POLICIES The Mississippi State Track and Field Media Guide has been prepared to assist media members in their coverage of the Bulldogs. It is our hope most of your questions will be answered on the pages of this guide. However, should you desire additional information or assistance, please contact us at COACH/ATHLETE INTERVIEWS All interviews with coaches should be directed through the MSU Athletic Media Relations office. Please contact Nick Price at or to arrange an interview. Coaches are primarily available for interview by phone or in person from 9-11 a.m. CT., depending on the team s travel schedule. Interviews with student-athletes are encouraged; however, all interviews must be arranged through Price in the Athletic Media Relations office. Interviews will be arranged according to the schedule of each individual athlete, and are usually conducted before or after scheduled practices. This policy facilitates the orderly scheduling and completing of the desired interview. All interview must be arranged at least 24 hours in advance. MSU Athletic Media Relations will not supply the media home or cellular telephone numbers for student-athletes. Likewise, training room, locker room and apartment/ dormitory areas are considered private player areas and are off-limits to the media. Since returning to his alma mater in 2000, Dudley has tutored over 50 athletes to All-American status. Throughout his tenure as head coach, Dudley has coached three athletes to become national champions, including Brandon McBride who was the indoor and outdoor 800-meter run national champion during the 2014 season. He coached both Erica Bougard who won the 2013 Indoor pentathlon title and D angelo Cherry to the 2013 Indoor 60-meter dash title. Under Dudley s guidance, the MSU men s track and field team saw its highest finish since 1923 at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships when the team placed 8th, scoring 20 points. The women s team had its highest finish at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a 18th-place finish. Throughout the 2014 season, Dudley was an integral part in the accomplishments of both the men and women s track teams. Dudley wanted to prove that MSU meant business. He ended his first season with six athletes named to first or second team All-SEC; three named to the All-Freshman SEC team and had a total of seven athletes earn first, second or honorary All-American honors. After the 2014 season, MSU track and field had eight athletes achieve All-American status. Out of these eight Dudley coached two athletes, including two-time national champion in the 800-meter run Brandon McBride. MSU track and field also saw 19 athletes qualify to compete in the 2014 Indoor and Outdoor National Championships. The MSU women s team earned 10th overall at the Indoor NCAA National Championships under Dudley s and his coach staff s guidance. This was the highest ranking in school history. Dudley, whose event focus is sprints, has seen numerous athletes through his 15 years achieve All-American status. In the 2013 season alone Dudley coached 12 out of 22 All-American Bulldogs. Also in the 2013 season, MSU had 14 school records and 42 Top 5 all-time performances. MSU saw a season that sent 12 athletes to NCAA Outdoor Championships, while claiming two individual national titles during the indoor campaign. The head coach led sophomore Erica Bougard to capture the NCAA Indoor Pentathlon Champion title with a school-record 4,399 points. He also aided senior D Angelo Cherry in earning the indoor nation title in the 60-meter dash. Under Dudley s guidance in 2013, the Bulldogs received both national and international attention, sending numerous athletes. When he was named head coach in 2010, Dudley had plenty experience in coaching national champion athletes and All-Americans. Prior to being named the head coach of the MSU track and field teams, Dudley served as an assistant coach from 2000 to 2009 under Al Schmidt. In his very first season as an assistant coach, Dudley had eight athletes earn all-america accolades. His success continued throughout the years. Dudley coached Pierre Browne who was named the 2003 NCAA Indoor National Champion in the 60-meter dash and finished runner-up in the 100m at the outdoor national meet. That same season Dudley had six athletes acquire All-American honors. Another key season as an assistant coach come in 2005 when Dudley guided State s 4x400-meter relay squad to a fifthplace finish at the national championships. That same season he garnered six All-Americans As an assistant coach in 2008, Dudley lead eight Bulldog sprinters to the regional qualifying marks. During that same season, he coached O Neal Wilder to become a USA Track and Field Junior National Champion in the 400-meter dash, a bronze medal at the World Jr. Championships in the 400-meter dash and a gold medal in the 4x400 meter relay. Dudley coached five more Bulldogs to earn All-American accolades in Dudley has always been a master of relays, and 2009 was no was a prime example. His 4x100-meter relay team finished 5th at the NCAA Championships and his 4x400-meter relay team earned medalist honors at the Mideast Regional Championships. Prior to his coaching time at MSU, Dudley spent three seasons at Bevill State (Ala.) Community College. Dudley coached three NJCAA national champions and 19 all-americans throughout his duration at Bevill State. In cross country, the men s and women s squads captured the Region XXII title in The Bears also won the 1998 Region XXII title en route to a third-place national showing. His 1999 Lady Bear team earned Academic Team of the Year honors, and the men finished second the same season. Twelve Bears earned Academic all- America accolades. For Dudley it is not only about what his athletes can do on the track, but also what they can do in the classroom. Since becoming head coach, MSU has had 86 athletes make the SEC honor roll. Before entering the coaching ranks, Dudley served as a captain for MSU s track team from While at State, he was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for three years ( ). 4

An accomplished distance runner for the Maroon and White from , Franks coaches and develops men s distance runners and served his first season as head cross country coach in Franks has been a fundamental part to the recent success of the MSU cross country and distance track and field programs. MSU Cross Country Head Coach During the 2014 campaign, Franks coached Price to All-American accolades after she finished 24th at the NCAA Championships. Price was the first athlete under Franks to receive All-American honors and the second female in school history. The women s team finished sixth at the NCAA South Regionals in Franks coached Price and three other runners to be named to the All-Region teams. Franks had 11 cross country athletes break personal-bests during the 2014 campaign. In 2012, Franks guided the men s cross country team to a Top 5 finish at the NCAA South Regional. The Bulldogs spot in fifth not only tied their best regional finish in history, but also placed them ahead of SEC foes Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Franks helped the women s cross country earn fifth-place finishes at both the 2010 SEC Championships and the NCAA South Regional, while leading the Bulldogs to seventh and 10th place finishes in the respected events. The fifth-place finish for the Lady Bulldogs at the SEC Championships tied MSU s best finish to date which occurred in Also in 2010, Franks coached sophomores Renee Masterson and Greenwell on their way to earning all- SEC and all-region accolades; along with senior Adam Lenz as he earned all-sec honors. MSU Track & Field Assistant Coach Coming off the best women s track and field season in program history, Franks coached MSU standout Rhianwedd Price to one of the best season s in school history. Price finished first at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in the 1500m run after running a personal-best time of 4: Her victory led to the highest women s finish in school history at 18th place. Price was the first NCAA Champion under Franks guidance. Other distance runners Frank s coached to the 2015 NCAA Championships include Marta Freitas and Cornelia Griesche. Freitas competed in the 1500m run finals alongside Price and earned a 12th-place finish, while Griesche finished 16th overall in the 3000m steeplechase. Griesche set the school record in the steeplechase at the NCAA East Preliminaries to qualify for nationals with a time of 9: Also making an appearance at the NCAA East Preliminaries was distance runner Damian Roszko. Roszko competed in the 10,000m run, which he holds the second-fastest time in school history (29:25.35). At the preliminaries, Roszko finished 41st with a time of 31: Franks coached Price her freshman year in track and field in the 800-meter run and 1500-meter run, both of which she holds the schools second fastest times. Three other distance runners also made their way in to the record book to hold the Top 3 times in the 3000-meter steeplechase, including Cornelia Griesche (10:00.58), Lisa Ziegler (10:18.51) and Emma Neigel (10:19.70). Griesche went on to receive honorable mention All-American accolades in the event. On the men s side of the 2014 outdoor campaign, Franks coached Damian Roszko, who worked his way into the record books in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:13.53 for the fourth fastest time. Previously in the 2013 season, Franks had coached John Valentine to earn second in MSU school record books in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14: Also working their way into the record books during the 2014 season, Roszko finished with the third best time in the mile in MSU school history with 4:07.61, while teammate Patrick Monaghan earned the second best time at 4: During the 2011 Indoor Track and Field season, Franks guided sophomore Haley Greenwell to a thirdplace spot on the MSU all-time list for the 5,000-meter run, but it was during the 2011 Outdoor Track and Field season that Franks really saw Greenwell shine. The Lady Bulldog raced her way to the top of the MSU all-time list for the 10,000-meter run, while posting a 3rd place finish at the SEC Championships and a 17th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Franks coaching paid off at the end of the season, as Greenwell was named an honorable mention all- American. Past Prior to returning to Starkville, Franks spent five years at Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University). While at SMS, Franks served as head cross country coach for the Bears and won three Missouri Valley Conference women s titles. His women s teams finished in the top four at the NCAA Midwest Regional s during his last three years and his men s squads finished in the top half of the conference during all five seasons. During the track and field season, the Bears captured three indoor and outdoor league championships on the women s side. Franks was a three-time MVC Coach of the Year in women s cross country. During the season, he was also a part of the first SMS squad since to win the league s coveted Triple Crown championships in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track and field. Personal Franks is married to former MSU runner Meggan Hodges. The two have two children, Madison and Patrick. 6

Des Moines, IA Aveteran at the national and international level for over 25 years and coaching 28 collegiate national champion squads, and numerous All-Americans and 15 Olympic Medalists and 17 World Championships Medalists at several of the nation s most prestigious programs. Silvey, who was inducted as a coach into the National Junior College Hall of Fame (2005) has a unique quality of having won 19 team championships in the SEC, Big-12 and PAC-10 conferences. Individually, his resume boasts 26 World Championship competitors, 34 Olympians and numerous NJCAA & NCAA All-Americans. At the international level, Coach Silvey served as the Zambia Olympic Coach for Track and Field in the 1992 and 1996 Olympiads, and produced its first ever Olympic medal in the sport of track and field with Samuel Matete in the 400 hurdles (silver medal). Silvey also served as the head coach for Zambia at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany as Samuel Matete again won the World Championship Silver Medal. Silvey served as Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Track Coach for Texas Tech University from 2004 to While with the Red Raiders, Silvey Helped lead the 2005 men s outdoor team to it s first ever Big-12 Conference Championship. Silvey s sprinters, hurdlers and relays scored over 100 of the points that won the schools first ever Big-12 championship for the Red Raiders. The 2007 men s outdoor track team also finished as Big 12 Runner-up this past season. Silvey s impact on Texas Tech University resulted in nine new school records during his 3 years with the Red Raiders. While at the University of Oregon from , Silvey made a quick impact on a struggling program. During Silvey s first year, the men s team jumped from fifth place to second place at the 2002 PAC-10 Outdoor championships. In Silvey s final season with the Ducks, the men s team claimed the 2003 PAC-10 Championship, an accomplishment not seen in 12 years. Silvey s two solid recruiting classes also produced another PAC-10 Conference Championship in Prior to his arrival in Eugene, Silvey built his reputation at two of the nations top track and field programs, the University of Arkansas and Blinn College. While at those schools, he was a part of 28 NCAA national team championships, including a stretch of 13 straight years before leaving the Razorbacks after the 2000 outdoor campaign. As the Sprints/Hurdles/Relays mentor at the University of Arkansas from the fall of 1994 through the 2000 outdoor season, he was part of 13 NCAA indoor and outdoor track & field and cross country team titles and 17 SEC team championships. His athletes won 15 All-American honors (including one NCAA champion and three NCAA runner-up) and 13 outdoor track and field SEC individual titles.the 2000 season was perhaps the finest by his athletes who posted one of the nation s top times in the 4X100-meter relay (39.27), a collegiate record in the sprint medley relay (3:12.13), took second in the NCAA 4x400-meter Final (3:02.02) and won the prestigious Penn Relays. His team s shuttle relay owned the fastest time in the world that season (55.37), which included DeMarcus Brown, who was an All-American in the 110 hurdles and owned a collegiate best of One of three Hogs that ran or faster that year under his guidance, while All-American 400-meter hurdler Samuel Glover owned a best of Prior to arriving in Fayetteville, he was five-time national coach of the year at Blinn College, where his squads won 15 national Championships in seven years. At the Brenham, Texas institution, Silvey produced 164 All-Americans, 128 individual national champions and 27 relay champions. His cross country program added a national championship 1993 and another in Silvey s 1992 and 1993 Blinn College teams were voted the Outstanding Team at the Texas Relays, and the 1992 team also added the crown of USA Men s National Relay Ranking Champions, according to Track and Field News. Prior to his stint at Blinn, Silvey served as men s and women s assistant track coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M University from 1984 to Silvey helped position the Aggies rise to national prominence, as A&M finished among the top six NCAA men s squads twice during his stay. A 1980 graduate of Truman State University (Kirksville, Mo.) with a bachelor s degree in environmental science education, he added a master s degree from Texas A&M University in physical education in Before returning to coaching in Fall 2013 at Mississippi State, Silvey spent five years in a private business in Dallas, Texas. During this time, he published 19 books on speed training and track and field topics.a 7

During her tenure with the Bulldogs. In her most recent season, Thomas coached Curtis Thompson in the javelin. Thompson finished third in the event at the 2015 NCAA Outrdoo Thomas has helped heptathlete Marrissa Harris earn indoor and outdoor all-american and all-sec accolades by tutoring her to personal-best in the shot put. Thomas coached LaQuinta Aaron to personal-best throws in the shot put that helped her earn provisional qualifications in the heptathlon for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Thomas also watched decathletes Darryl Brady and Martin Lee earn Top 8 finishes in the decathlon at the outdoor SEC Championships and also throw personal-best in the shot put and the discus. After completing her fourth season with the Bulldogs, Thomas aided in the success of Erica Bougard as she earned the 2014 SEC pentathlon title and was named a first team All-American. Thomas also coached Tautvydas Kieras who broke the school record in discus ( ) at the 2014 Golden Eagle Classic. In 2013 Thomas guided newcomer Piotr Antosik all the way to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. There, Antosik threw to finish 18th in the javelin. Earlier in the season, Thomas helped Antosik land a spot in MSU s Top 5 all-time with a javelin performance of Thomas led Favian Cowards to all-american honors in the 2012 season, coupled with a ninth-place national finish. Cowards, with guidance from Thomas, threw a personal best to win MSU s first SEC Championship in the weight throw. Cowards throw also set a new MSU all-time record and earned her a spot on the 2012 all-sec team. In 2011, Thomas coached Cowards to top finishes, before seeing the junior conclude her season with a fifth place finish at the SEC Outdoor Championships. Thomas had the pleasure of seeing Ed Wesela post five regular season victories in 2011 in the shot put, before placing third in the event at the SEC Championships. It was also under Thomas direction that Wesela was named a member of the 2011 SEC Community Service Team. In 2010, Thomas coached Cowards through her emergence onto the track and field throwing scene. Thomas tutored Cowards to a personal-best weight throw to earn eighth-place at the 2009 SEC Indoor Championships, where she earned all-sec accolades. In 2010, she led Cowards to a school record setting indoor 20-pound weight throw of ½, and a 5th place spot on the MSU all-time performance list for the hammer throw. Additionally in 2010, Thomas guided Wesela to personal-bests in the shot put and discus that helped him earn all-sec honors in both events. Thomas comes to MSU after coaching boys and girls shot put and discus at Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic High School. Her primary responsibilities at MSU are coaching throwers. She also coached with the Knoxville Track Club. A native of Albany, Ga., Thomas earned her degree in sociology from University of Tennessee in Prior to UT, she competed at Cloud County (Kansas) Community College. At the 2006 SEC Indoor Championships, Thomas finished as runner-up in the shot put. She also has three other Top 5 SEC finishes to her credit in the event. She currently ranks sixth on UT s all-time outdoor performers list in the shot put and seventh in hammer throw, sixth on the all-time indoor weight throw and fifth on the school s alltime indoor performers list in the shot put. Thomas helped UT win the 2005 SEC Indoor Championship. She was part of Tennessee s 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional team that captured the program s first victory at that event. 8

Austin (1983) Events Coach...Jumps Birthday Sept. 13 Birthplace Saraland, ala. Steve Thomas made his return to MSU track and field in 2011 as the new assistant coach for jumps. Thomas joined the staff after spending the previous three seasons in the high school ranks at St. Patrick Catholic H.S. Prior to that, he was at the University of Kentucky for two years. Thomas had great success druing the 2014 season. He coached Erica Bougard in the pentahlon, which in the SEC Indoor Championshiops she broke school history by becoming the first MSU athlete to win the SEC pentathlon title, after posting a personal-best 4,458 points. At the end of the 2014 season, Thomas had coached four athletes who were named All-Americans including, Bougard, Marucs Jackson, Jason Harper and Rochelle Farquharson. During the 2013 season, Thomas guided jumpers Bougard, Ebony Brinker, Harper and Jackson to earn high accolades at an elite level. Jackson set the indoor school record in 2013 with a high jump of 7-06, and entered the SEC Outdoor Championships, where he placed third, as the No. 4 high jumper in the NCAA. Bougard also rewrote the record book as she set the MSU indoor record in the triple jump ( ) and jumpedd a school-best in the high jump during the outdoor season. Thomas also coached triple jumpers Brinker and Jason Harper to top performances on the year. The two Bulldogs both made their way onto MSU s Top 5 all-time list with personal best leaps. In his second year back at MSU, Thomas found success continually throughout the year. With new and returning athletes, he led MSU jumpers to break school records and receive multiple personal bests at the SEC Indoor Championships. Thomas also flourished in the 2012 outdoor season as he accompanied sophomore Marcus Jackson to Iowa for the NCAA Championship for the high jump. His first season, Thomas had quite the prosperous year as he coached a SEC Champion who was also named the SEC Freshman Field Event Athlete of the Year, placed two on the All-American lists and placed an athlete on the second team All-SEC list. Under the direction of Thomas, Farquharson single-handedly placed Lady Bulldog jumps on the map with her performance at the 2011 SEC Outdoor Championships. On the men s side of things, Thomas had the pleasure of coaching James Harris and Jackson, two freshmen that also had pretty impressive years. Jackson made his claim for fame at the 2011 Outdoor SEC Championships as he finished second in the high jump to claim second team All-SEC honors and find a spot on the SEC All-Freshman list. Jackson also put on quite the show at the NCAA Championships as he jumped 6-10 ¾ to earn second-team All-American honors. It was also at the NCAA Championships that Harris made his impact, as he finished fourth overall to earn All-American honors. Prior to that, he was at the University of Kentucky for two years While at the University of Kentucky, Thomas made his mark coaching a six-time all-america honoree in the shot put and helping the female throwers produce impressive marks in their quest for championships. Prior to his work at Kentucky, Thomas served as an assistant coach at the University of Florida where he built upon his already impressive resume by coaching nine All-Americans, six Southeastern Conference champions and a pair of NCAA East Region champions. In his career, he has tutored individuals who have won nearly 40 conference championship titles. As head coach of both the men s and women s cross country and track and field programs at University of South Alabama from 1992 to 1998, he received four Sun Belt Conference Coach-of-the-Year awards. Also at South Alabama, Thomas brought the women s squad to a school-best second place finish at the 1994 Sun Belt Indoor Championships and fourth-place bests in four of his six years at the outdoor meet. He expanded and developed nearly every facet of the Jaguar program, producing 20 Sun Belt Conference Champions and the first NCAA qualifier in the history of the South Alabama. During his previous tenure as the head field events coach at Mississippi State from 1988 to 1992, Thomas trained two all-americans and six all-sec athletes. A group of athletes that combined earned 11 individual conference titles under his direction. Thomas is known on the international stage for his instruction skills, conducting clinics in Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, Mexico and Switzerland, as well as a two-week clinic in China in An all-district distance runner at Oklahoma Christian College, Thomas received his undergraduate there in 1981 before earning his master s degree in education from Stephen F. Austin State University in Thomas is a native of Saraland, Ala. He is married to the former Kim Eades, and the couple has one daughter- Kayleigh Lauren. 9

Chris Woods finds himself back at home as he rejoins the Bulldogs as Mississippi State s assistant track and field coach. Woods coached the 2015 women s relay team to the NCAA Championships where they finished 11th. The team was comprised of Ocian Archer, Kimari Martin, Shayla Luckett and Ste yce McNeil. During the 2015 NCAA East Preliminaries, Woods coached Luckett in the 400m dash, but she was unable to make it to the championships in the evnet. During his first season at MSU, Woods assisted in leading the Bulldogs to the post season. Woods was there when Brandon McBride became a NCAA National Champoin twice in the 800-meter. A native of Covington, Ga., Woods graduated from MSU in 2008 with a bachelor s degree in clinical exercise physiology. He returns to his alma mater, where he was a four-time Division I National Qualifier, two-time All American and four-time All-SEC athlete for the Maroon and White track team. Woods lettered four years at MSU. While at MSU, Woods finished 25th in the preliminaries of the NCAA Championships in the 800-meter. Woods comes back to Starkviille after serving as the head coach for the men s and women s cross country and track and field teams at Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C., since Prior to his time with the Panthers, Woods coached at Abilene Christian University as the men s and women s long springs, middle and long distance coach. During his two years at Abilene Christian, Woods aided his team to back-to-back NCAA Dibision II National Championships in men s track and feild. 10

His duties also include purchasing equipment and uniforms for all track and field athletes. A MSU alumnus, Schimdt earned his bachelor s degree in science and disciplinary studies in May 2013.Schmidt also earned his master s degree in sports administration in December 2014 from Mississippi State. Born and raised in Starkville, Schmdit attended Starkville High School prior to his college career. Schmidt has been around track and field for his entire like. He is the son of Al Schmidt, former director of track and field and head track and field coach of the Bulldogs for 23 years. Schmidt was born on Jan. 3, He is the son of Al and Jessie Schmidt. Schmidt has one sister, Sara Lynne. VOLUNTEER TRACK & FIELD COACH JOE GANT JOE GANT AT A GLANCE Season as Volunteer Coach at MSU College...Mississippi State University (1976) Joe Gant is entering his tenth season assisting with the Mississippi State track and field program. Gant, a former two-year letter winner on the Bulldog track squad in 1974 and 1975, works daily with the MSU decathletes and pole vault competitors. The Vaiden, Miss. native came to State in 1974 after a twoyear stint in the junior college ranks in Mississippi. He turned in a personal best 15 feet, six inches in the pole vault competition and placed second in the Southeastern Conference decathlon with 7,041 points. His total in the event is a school record (old javelin). After his collegiate days, Gant remained in Mississippi in the high school football ranks at Weir High School in Choctaw Country, Miss. While at WHS, Gant led the Lions to five Class 1A State Championships. His quintet of state titles is second all time in the Mississippi High Shcool Athletic Association s coaching laurels. He is the only coach in Mississippi to have won that many at one school. His nephew, Jamie Gant, played two seasons for the MSU Diamond Dogs from

62 ATHLETIC ACADEMIC CENTER LARRY H. TEMPLETON ATHLETIC ACADEMIC CENTER Dedicated on November 1, 2008, the Templeton Athletic Academic Center is a welcome addition to the Bulldog athletic program. The $10 million facility is named for former MSU Director of Athletics Larry Templeton. The facility is an addition to two existing facilities in the athletic wing of the MSU campus - the Shira Complex and the Holliman Athletic Center. It is situated on the south side of those two facilities, and across the street from the Bryan Athletic Administration Building. The 34,000 square-foot building serves the entire athletic department, houses the Athletic Academics offices and staff, and includes individual computer rooms, tutor work areas, a large open study area and a 300-seat dining facility with a fullyfunctioning kitchen. Templeton, now Athletic Director Emeritus, served 22 years as Director of Athletics and during his tenure helped position MSU Athletics as an innovative, progressive program, with equality in sports for women, new and renovated facilities and keen fiscal management. During the 1990s almost every sport came away with a best-ever finish. Achievements included six football bowl games, men s basketball s trip to the 1996 NCAA Final Four, three baseball trips to the NCAA College World Series, five Southeastern Conference championships and participation in the NCAA Championships by sport teams 29 times. 65 UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT DR. MARK E. KEENUM MSU PRESIDENT DR. MARK E. KEENUM Dr. Mark Everett Keenum became Mississippi State s 19th president Jan. 5, 2009, following a distinguished public service career. Dr. Keenum has guided Mississippi State to unprecedented heights during his six-year tenure. The university has experienced record enrollment growth to more than 20,000 students. The freshman class of fall 2014 was almost 3,000, and the average ACT score for 2014 was a record During , Mississippi State awarded more than 4,000 degrees at all levels for the first time in its history, and followed that with 4,222 degrees in The campus has expanded and improved on Keenum s watch. Major renovations of historic Lee Hall and Davis Wade Stadium were completed by August Construction of a new classroom building with built-in parking and a Fresh Foods concept cafeteria began in In 2015, construction is under way on two new residence halls, the new G.V. Sonny Montgomery Center for America s Veterans, a Wise Center classroom building, and an expansion of Mitchell Memorial Library is set to begin this fall. Since 2009, fundraising has reached all-time record levels, with private giving exceeding $80 million a year in fiscal years 2011, 2012 and 2013 and grew to $108.8 million in fiscal year In fall 2013, the university formally announced Infinite Impact: the Campaign for Mississippi State with a goal of $600 million by To date, more than $530 million of that goal had been met. Dr. Keenum has also been instrumental in expanding the MSU Promise Program, which provides need-based scholarship assistance to Mississippi students whose families have limited financial means. Mississippi State has strengthened its role as the flagship research university in the state. The most recent research success has been MSU s designation as the Federal Aviation Administration s National Center of Excellence in Unmanned Aerial Systems and Boeing s decision to locate a composite research center at MSU s Raspet Flight Lab. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies MSU as a university with very high research activity, the only such designation in Mississippi. Dr. Keenum travels frequently to Washington, D.C., meeting with Congressional leaders and federal agency heads to pursue research opportunities and broaden the university s influence on the national level. He has also worked closely with state leaders in support of higher education in Mississippi. Keenum serves as vice-chairman of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges Executive Council. SACS-COC is the recognized regional accrediting body in the 11 U.S. Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia) and in Latin America for those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master s or doctoral degrees. He also is a member of the American Public Land-Grant Universities Board of Directors. Based in Washington, D.C., the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) is a research and advocacy organization of public research universities, land-grant institutions, and state university systems with member campuses in all 50 states, U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Keenum has also been appointed vice chairman of the Foundation for Food and Agricultural Research by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack. In 2015, Keenum was named to the College Football Playoff s (CFP) Board of Managers and elected vice president of the Southeastern Conference. He remains a member of the SEC Executive Committee and continues to serve on the SEC s Content Committee that oversees the SEC Network. A graduate of Mississippi State University with degrees in agricultural economics, Dr. Keenum began his career at MSU as a faculty member with the Extension Service and the Department of Agricultural Economics. He went on to serve as chief of staff to U.S. Senator Thad Cochran in Washington, D.C. and was Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture prior to returning home to Mississippi State. He graduated from Corinth (MS) High School and earned an associate of arts degree from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville and was a member of the Northeast Tigers football team. Dr. Keenum is married to the former Rhonda Newman of Booneville, also an MSU graduate. They have four children: Rett, Mary Phillips, Katie and Torie. 65

66 ATHLETICS DIRECTOR JOHN COHEN John Cohen was named Mississippi State University s 17th director of athletics, MSU President Mark E. Keenum announced November 4, The former MSU head baseball coach and two-time Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year replaces Scott Stricklin, who was named athletic director at the University of Florida in September. I love Mississippi State University, Cohen said. As a student, later as a coach, and now with this fantastic opportunity to lead MSU s athletics program, this was always where I wanted to be. I am profoundly grateful for the chance to lead the totality of MSU athletics as I have tried to lead MSU s baseball program in daily and dogged pursuit of championships at the highest level. Cohen, 50, has spent over two decades coaching college baseball and has been the head baseball coach at MSU since In July, he was given the title of Associate Athletic Director, broadening his role in the MSU Athletic Department. Cohen s promotion to athletic director comes after a national search by the university. Cohen takes over an athletic department that has recently achieved new heights in athletic, academic, facility and fundraising accomplishments. As athletic director, Cohen is charged with providing leadership, management and administration for the university s athletic programs. He will report to the university president. A Tuscaloosa, Ala., native and MSU alumnus, Cohen was a head coach in the SEC for 12 years. His teams have been successful both on the field and in the classroom. At MSU, he has led the Bulldogs to a College World Series finals appearance, an SEC regular season championship and an SEC Tournament championship. Since 2009, MSU baseball has had 133 players selected to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, including three straight SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year winners from After a six-year stint with Missouri as a graduate assistant and assistant coach, Cohen was the head coach at Northwestern State University from Cohen spent two seasons as an assistant baseball coach at the University of Florida before becoming the head coach at the University of Kentucky in 2004, a position he held for four seasons before returning to his alma mater. While winning 284 games as a head coach at MSU, Cohen demonstrated the ability to develop players and coaches. During his tenure, 135 MSU baseball players were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Two of his assistant coaches at MSU went on to head coaching positions at SEC programs. Cohen has also worked closely with athletic department personnel to promote all facets of the baseball program and raise money for a new state-of-the-art stadium. Eight of the university s top 10 all-time marks in baseball season ticket sales have come during Cohen s tenure, including a school record of 5,874 in He has been a staunch of supporter of MSU s men s and women s athletic programs and has been a valuable resource for the entire athletic department during his time at MSU. A day after his hiring, Cohen immediately made a splash with the announcement of Andy Cannizaro as MSU s new baseball coach on November 5, Cannizaro, a former Major Leaguer and one of the rising coaching stars, has excelled in identifying talent at every stop of his career, including six years as a scout for the New York Yankees and two years as a Southeastern Conference assistant coach. Cohen and his wife, Nelle, are active members of the Starkville community. The couple has two daughters, Jordan Baker and Avery Lawson. I m fortunate to know our MSU coaches as friends and colleagues, and to know many of our athletes in all sports, Cohen said. While baseball has been a huge part of my life, my passion for seeing MSU athletics thrive and win extends to all sports. As associate director of athletics, I ve been a significant part of planning the future of MSU Athletics and I believe I can hit the ground running in advancing that agenda. I m grateful to Dr. Keenum and the Bulldog stakeholders who advised him for allowing me to embrace these new and critical responsibilities. As a baseball player at MSU, Cohen was a key player on the Bulldogs 1989 SEC championship team and 1990 College World Series team. He graduated from MSU with a degree in English in 1990 and received a master s degree in sports management from the University of Missouri in
