1 ORIENTATION Welcome to the twenty-sixth Centre for Art Tapes Media Art Scholarship Program! Through the Scholarship Program, you will work with individual mentors, meet visiting artists, take technical workshops, attend screenings and exhibitions, and have access to the all of the Centre's equipment, facilities, and resources. The Centre encourages all scholars to communicate with each other throughout the program. If you run into difficulties, you will likely find that others in the program have faced similar issues and may be able to help one another both creatively and technically. Staff members are also here to help you throughout the program. 2 IMPORTANT NOTES COMMUNICATION: The Centre for Art Tapes expects all scholars to communicate regularly with their individual mentor and Group Focus Team mentors. As a Scholar, you are highly encouraged to work with your program peers. Keep in touch with CFAT staff! We are here to help you solve any problems that may arise! We are here to help you meet the program requirements and complete your first media artwork. WORKSHOPS: CFAT workshops are free for scholars. You must enroll in the workshops, which are scheduled in communication with the CFAT staff, and attend the sessions you have signed up for in order to fulfill the requirements of the program. ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION Attendance at CFAT events and screenings is encouraged; our programming is there to enrich your creative process throughout the program. This is a great opportunity to enjoy yourself with your art! We will organize group gatherings to keep everyone in touch, and ensure you are having a good time and complete your project in a timely manner. YOUR SUPPORT TEAM Your Project Development Team is comprised of Keith McPhail, Kristy Depper, Tom Elliott, Jesse Mitchell, and your assigned mentors. Your project must be completed by 20 th of January 2015 NO LATER THAN 5 p.m. in order for it to be formatted for the annual screening in February This is a hard deadline that will not be negotiated. PROGRAM ACTIVITY EXPLANATIONS Scholarship Orientation Meeting - Thursday August 20 th Introduction to the program Introduction to the Mentors and expectation for meetings (meeting formats) Introduction to the Scholars and their projects Book the first Focus Group Meeting (September) Intro to CFAT Facilities - Tuesday August 26 th Introduction to the equipment available and sign-out procedures 2
3 Introduction to the facilities: video edit suites, audio suite and e-lab. Best practices for shared space use Health and Safety orientation Individual Project Planning Sessions to be determined by mentor and scholar You should meet with your mentor at least eight times between August and January (once or twice per month). Make sure to take notes, both for yourself and for the Record of Scholar/Mentor form which you will have to submit. During the initial meeting, you and your mentor will outline your project. During the October meetings you should be looking ahead to completing the remainder of your project. For example: Video/Documentary Finish shooting / acquiring source footage Update storyboard / Begin editing Animations Complete your storyboard Record dialogue Finish acquiring majority of source material Begin animating source material Installation Complete audio / video components Prepare plans for creating your installation Web-based: Establish site structure and general design Complete data research / compile content into appropriate formats for the web Complete your production components and begin your postproduction activities. Your project should be about 75% complete by the end of October. During November meetings, you should finalize plans for post-production. This is the time to concentrate on editing, shaping and revising the piece in order to complete your project by January. Post-Production Goals should include: Video/Documentaries Complete image editing / colour correction. Complete audio effects. Complete credits and other digital effects Animation Complete animation Complete soundtrack Complete credits and other digital effects 3
4 Installation: Complete technical preparations. Test Audio and Video components for synchronizing with the installation Complete credits Web-based: Complete a demo version for screening Complete beta testing and determine level of interactivity Complete project and upload to the server In January, submit the Record of Scholar/Mentor meetings form; you will not receive your honorarium until these are submitted. Focus Group Meetings - Time and location TBA From September to December, Focus Team meetings will occur approximately once a month. Scholars will meet for group critiques and discuss the creative and technical content of their project. Rough Cut: Focus Group Meeting December 10 th 2238 Maitland St. Be prepared to present a rough cut for an assessment of the presentation/quality Concentrate on refining the presentation aspect of your piece. In the postproduction phase both technical and aesthetic problems will have to be resolved in order for the work to be ready for the screening. Written Project Synopsis December 10 th - Submitted digitally to Kristy via Submit a word synopsis describing the project. Poster/Program Submission January 6 th Submitted digitally to Kristy via dropbox. Details to follow Send three digital stills, either by or burned on CD Send a word description of the completed work Send a 120 character description of the completed work for Twitter Completed project January 20 th FINAL Deadline for Scholars to hand in their completed works to CFAT Staff. Scholars who do not hand their work in on time will not be included in the screening. Digital File (normally ProRes) submitted to Tom. Please speak to Tom to make submission arrangements. Typically the project can be delivered via USB key, or left in the CFAT editing suites if worked on at CFAT. 4
5 The Centre for Art Tapes will provide the following services to Scholars: Individual mentorship Group critiques Technical training relevant to their project Consistent communication on workshops, and programming events. Each scholar will receive an honorarium of $400 upon completion of the program. Honoraria are presented at screening. In-kind use of facilities and equipment to be booked on an individual basis by the scholars. A premiere screening/installation of the completed work will be advertised and presented by the Centre For Art Tapes.
