Reader/Grader: Anne Donovan (anne.donovan@umit.maine.edu) Course Description: The development of the individual is a process of growth and change. The study of development is also intriguing because each of us, and everyone we know, is constantly developing. This course includes developmental theories, recent research and concepts important to the developing person. Required text package with text and additional materials may be purchased at the University BookStore: Rathus, Spencer A. (2006). Childhood and Adolescence: Voyages in Development. Third edition. Thomson/Wadsworth. CA. General Course Learning Objectives and Outcomes: In this class, students will pursue four objectives: Objective One: Based on the class readings, students will be able to recognize and describe the ongoing process of child development. Outcomes: Students will identify the three domains of human development (physical, cognitive and psychosocial) development by giving examples from the literature and applying their knowledge to specific examples. Objective Two: Based on the class readings, students will recognize major child development theories. Outcomes: Students will apply the basic tenets of major developmental theories to analyze developmental events and recognize those theories and applications when they are used. Objective Three: Based on the class readings, students will recall important developmental concepts.
2 Outcomes: Students will analyze specific applications when presented with examples of developmental concepts. Objective Four: Based on the class readings, students will be able to formulate relevant questions about the developmental process. Outcomes: By understanding standardized techniques for gathering data and by understanding the applications of the scientific method, students will be able to frame pertinent and relevant questions and understand the objective answers to those questions. LESSONS: There are 13 lessons that correspond to the first 13 chapters of your text. Each lesson should be completed within the stated time for that lesson (please see the tentative reading and exam schedule). Lessons open according to the reading schedule. The lessons consist of the expected readings, activities (some lessons may not have activities), lectures (slides and audio), and student discussions. These lessons cannot be reopened once the exam is active, so please download whatever you may need. Evaluation: This on-line class is composed of lectures, discussions and home work activities that compose your course grade. Students must complete three areas: all of the exams, five of the listed activities, and participate in assigned discussion groups for each chapter. The exams count 50%, activities 25% and discussions 25% toward your final grade. Failure to complete the exams, five of the activities, and ALL of the 13 discussions, will result in a failing grade. Exams: Exams will cover all materials presented in the course through the text and lectures. Exams are closed book with no notes or assistance from any external source. There are four multiple choice exams, and each exam will count 100 points. A total exam score will be calculated based on the average of these exams. Please be alert to when the "Exam" files open and close. Once an exam file is closed, there is no chance for make-up. With the exception of the first exam which has a longer time period due to more questions, you will have 75 minutes to complete the 60 question multiple choice test. Please remember, this is a timed exam. If you require more time, please make arrangements well in advance of the exam with the instructor. Generally, there is a 10 point penalty for makeup exams. Please contact the instructor for exceptions. Activities: The chapters have activities that accompany them. Please select five of the activities and submit the work to the home work folder via first class conferencing. Please review the "Activities" file in the lesson to select the home work. Please submit your home work only to the "home work folder." Do not submit your home work directly to the instructor. Students should complete the activities when the lesson is scheduled. Activities WILL NOT be accepted after the lesson date. Because of the number of viruses transmitted via , home work files should not be attachments. The reader/grader will not open any attachments. Please submit your work within the body of the file. Discussion Groups: Each student is assigned to a discussion group. Every chapter will have posted questions. Students need to respond to and initiate group discussion regarding the question. The discussion items correspond to the lesson. Therefore, the student must respond to the discussion item while its lesson is current as reflected on the syllabus' lesson date. This conference is for student/student interactions. This means that a dialogue is expected among students. Students are most welcome to bring information to the discussion from other sources for review and comment. The "CHF 201 Student Forum" folder, which is not graded, is used for public communication between the student and faculty or CHF 201 questions in general. Students MUST use the "CHF 201 Faculty Folder" to communicate privately to the instructor. Please note, discussion responses WILL NOT be accepted after the lesson has expired.
3 Grades: =A; 90-94=A-; 87-89=B+; 84-86=B; 80-83=B-; 77-79=C+; 74-76=C; 70-73=C-; 67-69=D+; 64-66=D; 60-63=D-; below 60=F. Policies: Students are expected to maintain and demonstrate appropriate language and attitude in maintaining a scholarly and civil environment. Each person must demonstrate mutual respect, reason and integrity. In taking examinations, each student is expected to demonstrate academic integrity. Each student is on his/her "honor" when completing the exams. Students, who evidence dishonesty with their academic work, will be referred to the Conduct Officer for appropriate action. Communication with the instructor: A confidential First Class folder entitled, CHF 201 Faculty Folder, is available for students to use. This is a private folder and students cannot open each others' postings. Academic Honesty: Academic dishonesty includes cheating plagiarism and all forms of misrepresentation in academic work, and is unacceptable at the University of Maine. As stated in the University of Maine's online undergraduate "Student Handbook," plagiarism (the submission of another's work without appropriate attribution) and cheating are violations of the University of Maine Student Conduct Code. An instructor who has probable cause or reason to believe a student has cheated may act upon such evidence, and should report the case to the supervising faculty member or Department Chair for appropriate action. Accommodation: Any student who wishes an accommodation because of a disability is encouraged to speak either directly to the instructor, or Ann Smith who is the Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities. Ms. Smith may be contacted at Electronic Learning: This class is in First Class with the exams in webct. Students who experience problems with the class technologies should contact: CED TECH HELP via First Class or telephone at (207) CED TECH HELP consists of technicians who help with online classes. It is important that students contact this office since thorough contact logs are kept. This documentation verifies the student's technical problem. The office is staffed between 8:30 and 7:30 Monday through Friday with limited online hours via on the weekend. Students may at any time, and responses will be sent most often during regular business hours. Each chapter has a due date for associated lessons. Each lesson must be completed by Friday of the stated week. If the student elects to complete an activity (five in total throughout the semester, then the activity is ed to the CHF201 Activity Dropbox. Activities are grades on the following weekend and the student is sent the grade. Each week an item is posted in the Discussion icon for groups to respond. There are thirteen discussions in total and student should discuss each one with their group members. Students are notified of their discussion grades as well. There are four exams available for 24 hours each. Once the student begins the exam, he/she must complete the exam within the allotted amount of time. Unless there is a family emergency or a medical reason documented by a physician, then the instructor does not make special arrangements for exam make-ups. There are no extra credit assignments in this class. Computer literacy: Students are expected to be able to negotiate the internet. Specifically, students should be able to understand the First Class conferencing system, send s in First Class, read s, access webct for their exams and access the web. Students are not guaranteed to be able to receive this class on their home computers. Difficulties in receiving the class on a home computer means that the student must find a location with access. Centers are guaranteed to receive CHF 201 online. The instructor cannot make schedule exceptions for
4 students who are having constant and consistent access issues on their home computers. The CHF 201 Welcome Page has a list of necessary software and free downloads for students who may not have the programs. The Welcome Page also has a test to determine if students can receive the class from their locations. On the CHF 201 home page is a Read Me First icon with much of the same information. Technical Support: CED TECH HELP (on First Class) or Please see the above paragraph under Electronic Learning for a full explanation. Time Management: Each lesson has deadlines. The instructor cannot extend the deadline unless there are documented medical or family emergency issues. The deadline corresponds to the end date for the chapter/lesson. Please see the reading schedule for specific dates. Tentative Readings and Exam Schedule: Please note: The dates and times are in Eastern Standard Time. The first lesson is open for one week only. The remaining lessons are scheduled for three and two days, generally. With the exception of the Lesson One opened for one week, there will be two lessons per week. I will open those two lessons for students at the beginning of the week. For example, sequentially the first lesson should be finished by Wednesday. This does not preclude students from working on the second opened lesson prior to Wednesday. The second lesson should be finished by Friday. All work associated with a lesson must be received by 11:55 PM on the dates indicated. Students who live outside of the EST zone should contact the instructor to make arrangements if necessary. Please mark your calendars with the following Exam One: Chapters 1-4, January 28th. Exam Two: Chapters 5-7, February 8th. Exam Three: Chapters 8-10, February 18th. Exam Four: Chapters 11-13, February 26th. Exams open at 12:05 AM on the exam day and close at 11:55 PM that same day. No final exam. This course ends February 26th.
