Radovan Sernec, Telekom Slovenia EUTC Utilities and Telecom Operators 19th March 2014 Brussels ebadge: Development of Novel ICT tools for integrated Balancing Market Enabling Aggregated Demand Response and Distributed Generation Capacity Partially funded by EC Grant agreement #

ebadge (10/2012-9/2015) at a glance

Objectives & Results Deliver pan-european intelligent balancing mechanism, enabling residential mass market to become a balancing asset within VPP aggregation with integrated, secure IT & communication infrastructure. 1. Simulation/modelling tool for studying Integrated Balancing Reserve Market allowing the participation of VPP at the distribution side. 2. Virtual Power Plant (VPP) as a Reliable Balancing Asset. 3. Uniform high performance message bus between Balancing/Reserve entities. 4. Pilot/Filed trial ebadge Cloud on > 120 locations. 5. Business models between Energy, ICT and Residential Consumers sectors.

Circle of challenges and work

What is balancing: ACER definition 1. Balancing Energy: Energy (MWh) activated by TSOs to maintain the balance between injections and withdrawals. 2. (Balancing) Reserves: Power capacities (MW) available for TSOs to balance the system in real time. These capacities can be contracted by the TSO with an associated payment for their availability and/or be made available without payment. Reserves can be either automatically or manually activated. Note: TSO = Transmission System Operator

Balancing market and allocation capacities

VPP as energy balancing asset: Minimum requirements today

VPP scope

Entities on smart grid market: Stakeholders Cloud Message bus Prosumers Prosumers

Information flow implementation: Message bus vs. classical approach

Information exchange with Message bus Prosumer Home Energy Hub VPP provider DSO TSO Energy Exchange

Why Home Energy Hub concept? 1. It enables end user to become an active PROSUMER. 2. PROSUMER = Consumer + Producer of electricity. 3. Participating (in)directly on the electricity market. 4. Continuous bidirectional information exchange in real time. 5. Inteligence to the edge (of network). 6. Decentralisation inherent scalability.
