2 Starting points IT systems supporting distribution power system operation and control, metering, planning, maintenance, asset management and other processes, suffer from insufficient level of integration and interoperability. Despite the availability of the standardization framework most European distribution utilities are still left in cold, as there is no generic strategy available on how to deploy CIM and how to integrate their crucial systems in the Operation and Enterprise zone, or are even not aware that CIM can be leveraged to solve their problems. GSSSI-EDU - Generic Strategy for Standards-based Systems Integration for Electric Distribution Utilities was a project in the scope of the DERri project (Distributed Energy Resources Research Infrastructures).
3 Standardization framework European Commissions Mandate M490 a standardization mandate to European Standardization Organizations to support European Smart Grid. 4 Systems of interest The DSO's systems of interest in the scope of this project : SCADA/DMS, Geographic Information System, Outage Management System, Software tools to analyze, plan, optimize and simulate the power grid, Asset Management System, Meter Data Management System, 3rd party systems operating on the grid Mapping of use cases to the SGAM: Some use cases: Grid model exchange Operations on the grid model (create,change,delete, ) Measurements and metering data exchange

7 Generic strategy 1. Get to know CIM and related systems integration technologies. 2. Get familiar with CIM tools. 3. Make a test CIM model of a part of a distribution network. 4. Define a vision and strategy. 5. Define the implementation process. 6. Implement the integration platform. 7. Make the first CIM based integration project. 8. Continue with systems integration.

10 Some open issues IEC (CDPSM profile) needs to be upgraded CDPSM and ENTSO-E CGMES synchronization DSO TSO data and model exchange There is no such strong organisation at the DSOs level as ENTSO-E is for the TSOs. Who will foster DSO s CIM adoption in EU?

13 Handling of unique identifiers mrid should be issued by a Model Authority. The process should be automated, so the corresponding service must be set up. IEC This service is especially important when data is shared between systems in different companies, but it is needed also inside the company in the case when multiple systems/applications can alter the CIM model (add new objects, etc.).
14 Conclusions The generic strategy should help DSOs develop their own strategy and road map on how to deploy CIM and how to integrate their systems in a standardized way. A broader debate should be started => more feedback and experiences should be gathered to improve the strategy and to facilitate the CIM adoption at the distribution level. IEC (CDPSM profile) upgrade will help to solve some distribution grid modelling issues.
